Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to open big this Memorial Day weekend, and may very well set a four-day record. For a movie that supposedly nobody asked for, flying by the previous record is a pretty good target.

Deadline is reporting that Solo is currently tracking for an opening above $170M over the weekend lasting from Friday to Memorial Day Monday, over four days. That should translate to a smaller three-day total than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story when you take the Monday out of the equation, but that's still a great opening that's more than enough proof that annual Star Wars movies are easily sustainable for Disney. The previous record-setter for the four-day weekend is 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($153M), which is closely followed by Lucasfilm's 2008 movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($151.9M).

Right now, unaided awareness is ahead of Rogue One and Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; the actual metric put the story of Han's rise to prominence in the criminal underworld at 28 versus the 23 that both the Star Wars spin-off and the Marvel sequel had at that same point in time. Speaking of Marvel, definite interest in Solo exceeds Spider-Man: Homecoming at 55 versus that movie's 53. Both Marvel movies made over $300M domestic while Rogue One cleared $500M.

Bear in mind that this projected opening is coming off the heels of the highly-anticipated Deadpool 2, which, while R-rated, is tracking for a $100M-$150M+ opening weekend depending on how that movie's Saturday and Sunday go. If Solo is able to perform so strongly in spite of being on the trails of a competitor's superhero movie, then that should be a very good sign for its box office prospects overall. (There's relatively little competition for Solo in the three weeks afterward as well, so that's another plus.)

Provided that Solo is able to make these numbers and hold over well in subsequent weeks, the Star Wars spin-off ought to do defy the odds in spite of its known production issues. But, it's as Han Solo said back in 1980: never tell him the odds!

Great forecast, fingers crossed! I've always considered $140-150 million opening a success for Solo, so I'm glad to see even bigger numbers becoming more and more feasible.

So that number is taking in to account Memorial Day? That seems pretty disappointing for a Star Wars flick. Not like this movie has had the best press or management so this not much of a shocker.

It's projected more than what Rogue One, so that all really matters. If you're expecting this movie to equal or surpass Episode 7 or 8, than you're in for a rude awakening. Rogue One set the benchmark for the Standalone movies and is the only movie that Solo should be compared too.

Considering that I didn't believe that Solo would hit 100 millions, this is fantastic. It's another proof that we live in a Star Wars bubble, all the tensions within the fandom, all the backlash from a part of fans, mean nothing to the general audience. Many of them don't even know about behind the scenes drama, they like Han Solo so they are going to see his movie.

Well the 170 total is including the holiday Monday so it's not really outpacing that much. Also this is a Han Solo movie not a film with a bunch of randoms like RO. I just figured there would be more interest.

Hopefully Howard pulled it out, and turned the mess into a serviceable film. But I'm still not convinced the main actor is in any way remotely similar to Solo.

Who cares it's on a holiday. Black Panther was released during Black History month. You don't think that was a major factor on it's impressive numbers? Also, Han Solo has to compete against Deadpool 2 which comes out a week earlier (which many haters said is going to blow Han Solo away). So having having Rogue One numbers or more after a highly anticipated movie is an impressive feat. Not mention pre-sell tickets of Han Solo has a higher number than Infinity War pre-sell in the first 24hrs of going on sell. Like I said earlier. Rogue One is the bench mark for the Solo movie, not TFA or TLJ. If someone is expecting those numbers for Han Solo, than their on some some strong drugs.

You do realize that Black Panther was a holiday weekend as well. It released on Presidents Day weekend.

If Star Wars fans really wanted to, we can make Solo the biggest opening week, breaking Avenger’s record. Tell your uncles, aunts, friends, relatives, everybody to pack the theaters and drive that $ up. Is it likely? Not really, but being a Star Wars fan, I do not want to see the alltime opening record go to a non-Star Wars film.

Did I say anything about Black Panther or are Star Wars fans really this sensitive about Marvel these days?

You didn't, but you used a holiday to discredit Han Solo's numbers. So, we used the same argument with a relevant movie that made stupid amounts of money. In other words your holiday argument is irrelevant. And it's okay to like both Marvel and SW in this world. Everything doesn't have to be in absolutes. Congrats on Marvel pulling numbers that equal or surpass SW. Doesn't mean that SW is a failure. It's no different than Stephen Curry getting more rings than Lebron James or even surpass Michael Jordan (If it ever happens ). Doesn't mean that Lebron James or Michel Jordan was a worthless player.

I hope this film kicks butt and takes names. I really do. I'm freakin tired of the negativity. Hell, some idiot posted a video on youtube supporting a conspiracy that fandango wasn't allowing anyone to purchase tickets for the film for any day EXCEPT Saturday. These people are obsessed with seeing what they are supposedly fans of fail. I would love for it to just smash all expectations, and for Alden to smash people's criticisms.

Personally, from what little footage we've seen, he seems to be just fine as a young Han Solo, at least in my opinion. I'll be watching this one three times, just as I do with every Star Wars film (that isn't AOTC which I only saw once in the theater).
