"Fans" wanted to get rid of George Lucas with the same "passion" for decades. Look how that turned out.

Oh no, the crazy-obsessed "fans" surely ain't going anywhere. That's why any potential marketing campaign should ignore those and focus on casual fans and general audiences.

Lucasfilm just needs to cut down production drama and make films critics/audiences like. They were 3 for 3 until Solo. Kennedy was lucky that Rogue One was rescued by Gilroy. I'm sure Abrams will make a crowd pleaser in IX, but Lucasfilm will have to think about where to go after that.

Why is there no "laugh hysterically" emoji? I wanted to put some after quotes of some of the early predictions made in this thread.

What turned out was 1 mega box office hit, the highest grossing spin off of a non comic book property of all time.

Than they got sentimental and started referencing the prequels more and more...it is fantastic that the first full blown prequel reference(maul) happened in and film that was the first box office disaster of star wars history. Disney will get only one message from this

No prequel references allowed in movies

Lucas was firmly established having been the guy who created the whole thing. Even then, as much as people knocked on the product due to its change of aim to the kiddies, there was no debating that these *were* Star Wars films, just not very good ones unless you were 8.

DisneyWars isn't. They've had one outlier film that general audiences loved(and was primarily the result of Iger birddogging Abrams), were able to get in the save with R1(did they think they would succeed every time doing that?), and have gone down the skijump like Vinko Bogataj since.

And the biggest thing you haven't seem to come to terms with yet, which Solo has now proven... is that with Lucas gone... enough fans can and will stay away to implode Solo on a level we haven't seen since John Carter. Nobody, even those going super low just for funsies, could imagine where it would end up.

    Particularly the theater. #rimshot.

I'd start with a good movie, but apparently they did that and people didn't come. Some might suggest that the only way to get the fans back is through an alteration of course, rather than depending on the law of averages. They *will* keep hitting air balls with the fans if they continue to soldier on.

Honestly.. take the marketing campaign money for 9 and use it to buy as many people tickets as possible. It'll be a better use of the money, as at this point they're largely convincing people not to go the more they try to paper over the problem with cash.

I know the script for episode 9 has been completed, but you have to wonder if any of the 'fan revolt' of the last 6 months, and now Solo's bad performance, will cause them to rethink things. It is one thing for a stand-alone to fail, but it would be an epic failure for IX to bomb. How could Disney squander so much goodwill in such a short amount of time? I won't say I hated TLJ, but it just seems like a squandered opportunity to really push the 'new' cast to the next level. I just don't feel like the general public has really connected with the new cast (not the fault of the cast, but the writing) and the 'old 3' are now gone. So Disney has really painted themselves into a corner. If i was Disney i'd go ahead and start planting "Luke's not dead" hints, and some how figure out a way to bring him back. I think most people just don't even care what happens to Rey....she can't do anything wrong anyways

This is just my guess: Lucasfilm/Disney has invested too much in the "TLJ was a great movie, anyone that disagrees are misogynist or just to dumb to get it" theme. That is the spin they have created, which their directors have directly supported with their quotes. It would take too much of credibility to go back on that...and they probably exist in their very own bubble. Just like us.

I think they will still know that especially losing all 3 original characters for IX will hurt them. They would be dumb not to do market research, and the likelihood of them finding ut that Rey, Finn, Poe and Rose Tico does not have the appeal needed to carry IX as the blockbuster hit they really want. They will try to appease this by getting Mark Hamill to appear as a force ghost. ($$$ for Hamil) This will be clearly shown in the trailers leading up to it in an attempt to bring back old fans for the finale.

I'd guess that IX still will show itself to lose audience attendance even below TLJ. The heights of TFA will forever elude them. I think they shut down one of the golden goose's ovaries for good. They will still make good money though, and little mention will be given to TLJ's role in this later on. We will have the same old story of ""Star Wars fatigue", sequel fatigue, movie scrutiny (critic score for JJ will probably be less than RJ's etc) competiotion etc to explain this away.

After that, we will probably see a total reboot, with the featured later trilogy. In this none of the characters we have witnessed in VII-IX will be prominent. How that turns out is anyones guess, but I think it might succeed. While I think Rian Johnson did terrible with TLJ, he might succeed at something new. They will continue to profit from the brand, yet I would be surprised (though pleasantly) if they ever again get close to TFA's box office. They will proably try out another stand-alone movie, but with a smaller budget than Solo. Point is, Disney will profit from SW, even if they lose a part of their potential audience.

That is my pessimistic approach to this. Time will tell if this holds up as a theory.

The heights of TFA will elude them no matter what. It's never going to get back to that.

They're hampered more by Carrie Fisher's death than anything. I don't know they can recover what would have been an awesome Carrie Fisher FTW (or Galaxy) film.

Want to get the haters back in the seats?

Just have a Kylo remembering flashback scene with a digitally de-aged Han, Luke & archival footage Carrie dropping off a 10 year old Ben at Luke's academy. Then cut to the present.

But what do I know. I'm just a toxic male fan.

That probably won't be enough for all the haters. Some, I am sure, would want an epic duel between resurrected Luke and Darth Plagues, with Rey begging forgiveness for her lameness in the background.

Rey should just be great as she is, daughter of Luke , and all will be fine in the galaxy. If Luke is her dady people will forget it all and Star Wars glory will be restored so they can milk money from dosens of non-Skywalker films with our blessings.

Otherwise there will be no milking or it will be cursed...ask Luke.
