I know there has been a ton of negative buzz around Star Wars of late, between the divisive reception to The Last Jedi, to all the drama behind the scenes of Solo (the firing of Lord and Miller) to the near total lack of promotion of the film and a general feeling that Solo is destined to be a bust.

Even after all of that noise, I think that this movie has a chance to be a lot of fun and could go a long way to winning back some of the audience that was bitterly disappointed with The Last Jedi.

I thought the trailer for Solo was unexpectedly great. I was happy to see Donald Glover say that the film was "going to be a lot of fun” in an interview yesterday. He made mention of the fact that we already know (I’m paraphrasing here) how the story ends and that unlike the last few SW films there is no death to any major characters to depress people. He also called Solo "a big fun summer movie"

We will also be getting a film with characters that we already know and love. No need to waste time on characters like Rose Tico that may or not work...We are getting some of the characters that made Star Wars great in actual starring roles. I’m excited to see Han, Lando and Chewie back in action and not have to take backseats to lesser characters in the SW universe...Coming on the heels of a film that attempted to deconstruct the entire SW universe, I think it might be fun to see a SW film that might actually feel like a SW film and restore the sense of fun that was missing from TLJ.

Add to all that the film is in the very capable hands of Ron Howard and Lawrence Kasdan and maybe, just maybe the film shocks everyone and turns out to be really good...Obviously , I have no idea if the film is good or not, but it definitely has some things working in it’s favor and it could be just what the franchise needs at this moment in time.

I need more than fun. Fun is the same word that critics throw around to justify giving trash movies like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 a glowing review.

I honestly don't know where all this "this movie could be unexpectedly good"...."it may shock everyone" stuff is coming from. Where did this "theory" start that it was an immediate given that SOLO is going to suck? It has enough reasons to be great just as every SW movie preceding it.

While I concur with most of your post, I don't agree with the "lesser character" and "sense of fun missing from TLJ"....but hey, it's a forum. And no winning back for me, I was won over in May 1977 in the theater as a 12 yr old.

What divisive reception to TLJ are you talking about? RT?

Also, I'm not at all worried about the writing for Han Solo nor the characters and situations. This is going to be a great film....

Must not bite, must not bite... ;)

I'm positive about Solo as well. No point being negative about it - the prospect of seeing the Kessel Run, the Falcon again but different, and a darker side of the SW universe, what's not to look forward to?

To be fair, he's supposed to say that. I don't take a lot of stock of what people that are making the film say. NONE of them are EVER gonna say that the movie is going to be bad and you should not watch it. That'll never happen. But...

I trust Ron Howard to deliver at least a solid movie. I think everyone is being too pessimistic. The trailer seems like the film will be really fun but with a sharp edge to it. Visually, I love the Space Western style. It was always my favorite part of Star Wars.

It doesn't help that the film had major production drama and on top of the fact that a lot of people wasn't necessarily asking for it.

I am very optimistic. I think hiring Ron Howard is the smartest move LFL has made in the Disney era, despite the circumstances by which he was brought on being less than ideal.

I think that general sense comes from all the behind the scenes drama that went on. It’s not often that a director (or in this case two directors) get fired half way through such a major project. There were other leaks that have people concerned about the film. For example:

1/ Media reports that even Disney thinks Solo is going to be a bomb
    https://www.screengeek.net/2017/12/24/disney-expects-solo-a-star-wars-story-to-bomb/
2/ Reports that Alden Herenreich wasn't doing a very good job and that an acting coach needed to be brought on board during filming.
3/ Lawrence Kasdan being upset with the original directors that his script was being butchered in favor of add libs.
4/ Kathleen Kennedy firing yet another director.
5/ Reports that the script is “unworkable” and that “it’s going to be a car crash”
6/ Ron Howard literally had to shoot more than half of the film in a very short time frame to meet Solo’s deadline.
7/ Total lack of promotion. Never a good sign.
8/ The fear that the severe backlash that The Last Jedi faced could hurt Solo at the box office especially coming so soon after TLJ. Many fans swear they are done with the series after such a divisive film

Yeah, SOLO looks like it could be fun, in this case, I totally agree, but... it doesn't seem to be more than this. Maybe, with SOLO they miss the cance to make the universe bigger and richer. Of course, they add some new characters, but the focus, our focus, will l on the old ones: Solo (Is Ehrenreich as bad as expected?), Chewie and Lando (Is Glover as good as expected?). At the end, it could be "just Han's origin": funny, yeah, but also a bit of "just there and nothing really big you will remember", as the SW movies should be or were many years for me (and the episodes just are, besides all the possible critics).

Lots of assumptions and opinions in there. Not even going to start picking them apart. Not going to even discuss the "severe backlash that The Last Jedi faced".
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 25, 2018 ---
Do you have any measurable data to back up the "on top of the fact that a lot of people wasn't necessarily asking for it" statement?

Just to counter some of those point though if they all turn out to be true then it could indeed be a disaster.

If your point 3 is true then actually caring out point 4 could be seen as a good thing as I have more faith in Kassandra then Lord & Miller.
Do we know when & why a acting coach was brought on board as being optimistic it could be because he had prepared to play Han one way & then the directors took him in a different direction plus all the improv stuff could be a reason for the acting coach as nothing has come out that he had similar problems with Howard as a director ( Though that could just be they clamped down on leak since Howard's hiring.

Now 6 7 & 8 even being the optimist can see could be cause for concern The fact they kept the May date is either A) They know Howard has done a amazing Jong on this film so let's get the film out there or he has done as much as was possible & delaying the film would just cause even more problems. I'm still amazed they kept to the May release schedule.
As for 8 that I will admit is one of my big concerns no matter how good this film is it will suffer because of the split no matter how large or small in the fan base after TLJ & that isn't anything to do with the film. Though a plus side if it is a really good fun SW film then hopefully it can get those fans who did not like TLJ back to being hopeful about future SW film.
