The SOLO score youtube video comment sections are exploding with positive ratings.....seen one comment with 200+ likes. This score is really really really good.

This to me is an amazing development for a movie that got completely shredded across youtube video comment sections pre-release.

Well, Lucasfilm has supposedly been making the Fett film since 2015 with Josh Trank, but "in production" is a bit much, "in development" is probably a better term. According to reports, the Obi Wan Kenobi movie is in the early stages of full-on pre-production and will be the next one to be made.

Right now, with the terrible box-office reports of Solo coming out, there are probably shouting matches going on at Lucasfilm right now as I type this about what the next move actually is going to be. I think they might need to wait another week to let the dust settle though.

    Ok, I just seen it.

Really loved it. This was just a great time at the movies. You can tell they care about the material. Expectation were a bit low for me so happy to say I enjoyed. Kasden needs to always be involved it looks like, he understands the magic of Star Wars.

Many great moments. A few niggles, (L3, didn't like), will go deeper later, but mostly positive for me.

Have to say, I wasn't as excited about Solo as I was R1. Not that I don't like the character, I was just more into the jedi sith. But with that being said, I really enjoyed Solo (never thought I wouldn't). Enjoyed the story and really like how they used the OT sound track vibe during the Tie chase in the Kessel run and some PT tones when Maul was shown. It was a really good movie. I know its not starting off strong at the BO but hey, its not something I every worried about during the OT, so Im not now. I enoyed it. I know the TLJ haters are gonna says it because of the back lash but there is no, and will not be any hard evidence of this. Many may not be interested in Solo, many will not go because of their TLJ hatred (which is a shame because they are missing a good movie), and it also had its directorial troubles before TLJ even came out. No way to pinpoint exactly what it may be if it does less than expect. Prolly a little bit of each but the show will go on.

    It's really good!

I'm known as a sour faced git and from about 15-20 minutes in I didn't stop smiling till it finished. Definitely the best of the Disney era so far. Just a shame it had to follow TLJ (Which I like, but totally understand why loads hate it)

It was also definitely the most competently made, no massive gaps in action sequences or stupidly long shots that make it feel like we're watching a sequence out of time and that interrupt the flow (Looking right at you RJ smh) Not one moment where the characters felt out of character, one poorly delivered line or dialogue/jokes the felt too 2018 Earthy (JJ and RJ take note!) or a moment where I rolled my eyes at the film being too self aware, meta and referential or stuffed with unessicary cameos of minor characters/objects from the OT (cough...RO...cough...)

I mean, nothing massive really happens, there isn't too much drama, threat or suspense. It's too dark at times and I don't personally like the idea of Han being involved in the rebellion so early, but those issues aside it was fantastic! Really, really great! :)

Would be so happy to see Ron Howard do another one, he gets it and to my eyes at least appears to most competent filmmaker they've used so far.

That's actually a good idea. Now it kinda makes more sense why he came back at the end of ANH and enhances his overall character arc.

I've been really thinking about this, because when I first heard Ron Howard was going to direct it, I had a hard time picturing that because of his style of film making, which is typically just right down the middle. Solidly good, but right down the middle; like a Speilberg with less intensity and more sweetness/empathy.

But one thing I forgot that probably helped a lot here is that, yes he does know how to make action and suspense films, but more importantly, he grew up in Hollywood in the golden era of the Western.

That probably helped a lot with getting that feel right and not having it come off as an ode to Westerns, but instead feel like a Western, and I think feeling like a Western without getting hokey was key to this film.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Got tickets for 3:45pm showing today. I'm hoping the theater doesn't have projection problems (huge problem in American theaters). The projectionists never remove the 3D filters so dark films like Blade Runner 2 and Solo look way too dark. It's infuriating how inept some theaters are about setting up films correctly.

I saw it on Friday night. What a fun entry into the Star Wars world.

Acting and VFX were great across the board. Action sequences were great too n I love that we visited Kessel and saw various things we wanted like meeting Chewie, the DL44, beating Lando at Sabaac etc

Great references to Boskk, Aura Sing and the cameo by Maul was superb.

I really want a follow up story to this!

The digital system does away with a projectionist, actually. When a theater flips to digital, they usually do away with their projectionist (as in, a dedicated craftsman who understands the technical nature of cinema in a manner akin to a camera operator and cinematographer) because it's an additional cost they don't absolutely need. They usually flip the task over to regular house employees, or a non-specialized and in-house trained hire; both of which are far cheaper.

The problem is that these people don't know anything first-hand, and only know things based on instructions on a bullet list.

I once walked out and showed the personnel the dB reading from in the theater and their response was that the board shows the correct level. I had to walk them through the difference between a reference level that is set by a pink noise test and actual sound levels and how a pink noise calibration test set incorrectly would still show a reference level that looked good, while an actual dB level in the house that was too loud, and that if they just turn the whole system down temporarily by roughly 3 dB on the board, they should be much better and kids in the film will likely stop covering their ears.
I'm a nice person (I am irritated by everyone, and think too many people are idiots playing silly monkey games, but I don't act on those impulses generally), so I pulled out my phone and pulled up the standards .pdf for theater calibration and showed them what I was talking about as best as I could water it down in under 5 minutes.

It's just tricky because there isn't really a need (business-wise) for a projectionist, but there is a need for a general technician; however, most employ an on-call and calendared service for that now rather than keeping them on staff at all times.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Guys, I loved Solo! I went in hopeful, but guarded, and I was pleasantly surprised. They keep going on about the box office, but this one could be a slow burn due to word of mouth, I think. A movie franchise just can't keep going bigger and better with each successive movie forever, so I find that pretty unrealistic, but I hope they do well enough to keep making movies like this because I am seeing overwhelmingly positive response to it and a few negative responses here and there from... people who mostly haven't even seen the movie, haha.

Watched Solo for a second time today. The showing was sold out and clapped at the end (make of it what you will). I probably won't see it again in the theaters, but it's probably the most fun Star Wars film since TFA. Rogue One has a fantastic final act, but it's not much fun getting there. TLJ is a middle chapter film that's serious in tone. It's nice to get another fun Star Wars film. I really hope the film has enough legs to justify a sequel. Also, I hope enough fans like to stop this dreadful pessimism that's going around. It's about to drive me out of this forum. I watch these films for entertainment, not to hear about how a film "destroyed my childhood and I hate a movie producer."

I had a lot of fun and it reminded me of the feel of the very first Star Wars. (Episode IV if you will) It felt like a Star Wars movie. I thought the references were cool, but I wondered how much just the movie watching fan would be confused by such as Maul showing up. As a nerd, the references to the cartoons were cool to me, but I imagine they would go over some heads. I thought Rogue One was a better film, but I liked this one better. I didn't expect much going in, I wasn't looking forward to it as much, but it was still magic.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier: Where the hell was Lobot? If we get a sequel Lobot is an absolute must. In fact they should double down on the canon characters by also having Maz and Sana.

I think it's too early in the timeline. Lobot isn't with him just couple of years before ANH (Rebels) and he doesn't have Cloud City yet. Between Rebels and ESB, there is 4-5 years. This is where Lando comic is set, we learn how Lobot became Lobot we know and still no Cloud City.

Sana is in the Last Shot, this section is set after Solo, Han is mostly delusional about Sana liking him. :D

Maz could certainly work if we ever get the sequel.

I would love to see Hutt's crew being led by Boba Fett. This would tie in nicely after this film.

Today I talked with a guy, who's a big, old-school Star Wars fan (more casual than a lot of us, though). He didn't like TLJ and was sceptical about the idea of a Han Solo movie. He was one of those who thought it's sacrilegious to mess with Harrison's character, couldn't really imagine anyone else doing this.

To my surprise, it turned out he enjoyed Solo and said Alden was great! Moreover, he said that he'd like to see a sequel. I think this is a tremendous microscale success of the film. I was very happy to see this honest change in tune.
