To each their own. I respectfully disagree but not going to lower either of your standings with a 'Disagree' reaction. Maybe someone has done a fanedit of the movie that would 'rescue' it for me? It was never going to satisfy me and was not a story I felt we ever needed telling. This is the only way I would want to see more Solo stuff lol
The 3 years of adventures Han, Luke and Leia had between Star Wars and Empire... and the first 3-5 years after Jedi with the addition of Lando to the cast... :)

I agree with you that this film wasn't necessary and when it was announced I didn't think it was a good idea, mainly because Solo is my favourite character, I couldn't imagine anyone else other than Ford as Solo and there was danger that Dinsey was going to ruin an iconic character.

However the more I saw the trailers the more optimistic I was for this film and for me it didn't disappoint. I just looked at Han as a younger more impressionable and naive version of the Solo we see in ANH, with the next 10 years experience of smuggling for the Hutts having turned him into the streetwise and pessimistic Han we know from the OT.

2 years later and the movie still holds up for me. Just watched it last night and it’s a shame the movie got sandwiched into the controversy that has pervaded the fanbase after TLJ. It deserved better and will always have a cult audience of fans like me that adore it.

I adore it as well. Is it the best SW movie? No, but I think it is a huge amount of fun! I think the movie is massively underrated by general audiences - I always see people say it was an “unnecessary” movie - of course it was! No movie is “necessary” :) But I will happily watch hours of Han and Chewie running around the galaxy and their adventures. I really hope we get a Solo 2 someday with Alden and Joonas.

I think Solo is far more important than it is currently recognized for.
It carved the way forward for tone for non-saga films.

Solo was the first time that a non-saga film carried a cinematic poetry to its narrative causality in an idealized manner as representational of the character's own internal narrative.

Mando also does this. We'll see if this continues going forward, but I think it's important. It does somewhat feel like the franchise's "AH-HA!" moment for wrapping its head around how to go about telling non-saga stories.

R1, while interesting and loved by many, doesn't feel like Mando or Solo. It doesn't contain a symmetrical metaphor between the narrative and the protagonist which mirrors the relationship between the protagonist to their struggle.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
