SPECULATION Solo?

I don't jest. I think some day we could see Garnidan's ultimate fate in a spinoff! And I would be there in line with you to see it! LOL

 

With rumors all pointing towards a Han Solo origin story coming our way in 2018, perhaps it's time to start asking what we want to and expect to see from this spin-off film?

The concept of a Solo origin story is both tantalizing and a bit dangerous, if you ask me. First of all, how do you recast a legendary actor in a legendary role? There isn't a man in Hollywood right now who jumps out at me as an obvious choice to play our favorite smuggler. Perhaps a relative unknown would be the best route to take here? Furthermore, any Solo origin story certainly has to show us exactly how Han swindled the Falcon away from Lando, which requires another difficult recast. What say you, fellow Cantina members? Who is our lead for Solo?

Another question here though is what will we see in terms of a story? Will we see the beginning of Chewy's life-debt to Han? Will we find Han in the Imperial Navy at the beginning as he was in the expanded universe novels about his origins (I find this a bit unlikely since this sounds rather similar to rumors we've been hearing about an imperial deserter in episode VII)? Will we see any other characters from the OT or PT make an appearance?

I agree with pretty much all you've said.

First, as a HUGE Han fan, the biggest negative for this project is attempting to cast Han Solo. As much as I loathe the idea I am not naive enough to think Disney would forego all of the money a potential Solo movie (or movies -- think trilogy) would make. So for as much time as Disney/LFL took in casting Episode VII I suspect they have already begun searching for a youngish Han Solo.

Second, as for the content, I think we do need to see some of the important events from his past that set up the character we came to know and love in the OT and now ST. As you've mentioned these include his time in the Imperial Navy, which I feel is important as it gave him first-hand knowledge of the evil forces he was working for and how he came to hate it. His rescuing of Chewbacca from the Empire and Chewie's subsequent life debt. And of course winning the Falcon from Lando Calrissian. The caveat here is that I would hope they don't force all these events into one movie. Even though the old EU is no longer canon the AC Crispin series did a pretty decent job of showing his backstory through a series of 3 novels. Even if Disney doesn't use those as the material they should use the structure of 3 acts and thus 3 movies.

As long as they get the casting right, Hell yeah I would watch 3 Han Solo movies!

 

I'd given some thought as well to the notion that Han has quite a bit of backstory to squeeze into 2 hours of screen time... A trilogy isn't out of the question, certainly. It's been well established that the model Disney is going forward with for the Star Wars universe will be very similar to what the model for Marvel has done. As such, maybe we should really look at all of these spin off movies as sort of auditions for trilogies of their own. If Boba Fett does well, make another. If Solo does well, make another... and so on and so on. There's plenty of time free in Han's timeline to have a series of cinema adventures before the Falcon lands on Tatooine.

 

Why does it need to be origins? Could it not just be a story of Solo in a different setting? Could be nice to have a darker feel with him shoting first and running from the law...an outlaw biker feel set in a galaxy far far away....

 

Who knows of it's even about Han. It could be his son, daughter, dad?

No. If we are going to see Han Solo's father, I will accept none other than the great Sean Connery.

In all seriousness though, I don't know that I really want to see Han's family as I like the sort of out of nowhere maverick idea of him. Seeing him with siblings or parents would detract from his character, I believe.

 

Recasting Han Solo would be extremly hard. I always enjoyed movies with Paul Dano (12 years a slave!!!). So this is my choice:

Liked him in Little Miss Sunshine -- don't see him as Han Solo.

 

Paul Dano played Harrison Ford's son in Cowboys and Aliens, so maybe they will reverse it where he plays Han's father.
This may also be a spin off of The Force Awakens or Episode VIII, using characters from the new films and filling some gaps between or prior to.

 

@Ceruleanlord: I would like to see Paul as Han`s father. Since I saw him in "There will be blood" I thought he could play a cool anti-hero type of character.
..but still...I fear a Han spin-off could kill the legend Han Solo...

 

If they leave Han out of it and make it about his father and family, and what kind of circumstances Han was born into, it could add a lot into his character and mannerisms.

This guy could play a young Han Solo. He has already stared in a film called "Age Of Adiline", playing as a younger version of Harrison Ford.

 

First we hear that a Bounty Hunter movie will be the first spinoff and now this rumor coming from MSW. I don't know if I like the idea of a Han Solo spinoff.

How about if the first spinoff is Ford between 7 and 8.... maybe 7 will lead into a smaller soloSolo adventure.... and then leading into 8 Nobody else should EVER play Solo
