okay, as we all know, SW movies all begin with the crawl then a space ship flying in space and then a cut to live action which is the opening scene.

RJ has said that E8 begins where EVII left off: with the hero of Ep4-6 finally entering the story. (Sigh)

Now, I'm going to assume RJ continues the space vehicle in space tradition (partly because he's already breaking one tradition with the in medias res of Luke & Rey meeting.

    Possibilities:
1)the crawl could have an echo of ESB, saying the FO searches for Rey&Luke, and do the probe droid thing but with a water riding prove droid that finds them at the island and it lurks until Luke notices it (having spotted one on Hoth, and later being told by Han (offscreen) what it was) and destroys it, showing Rey (and the audience) rather than telling her how skillful and powerful he is.

    2) the last two minutes of TFA are shown (with a few different angles shot by RJ) and showing the falcon arriving from space.

    3) the rebels are shown moving from their base (shown from space) off to another system, and one ship breaks off and heads to another planet: It's Leia going to visit Luke, having been alerted by R2 or Chewy that Luke is alive and...probably needs a bath.

We then follow Leia's ship to the island, we watch Rey and Luke interact, then Leia shows up to help convince Luke he has to get off his butt.

I think one of the most interesting parts will be the beginning, balancing the required shot of space activity while using Rey and Luke as the first scene.

    Thoughts?

IMO, there will be either 2 things. 1) we won't see a crawl, which might cause riots in the streets. I would personally love this option as I think Star Wars needs to move beyond its traditional story telling modes, or 2) we might see a crawl from Luke's POV. What I mean is that in VII the crawl tells us Luke is missing and everyone wants to find him. The crawl in VIII then could tell us why luke is there, what he has been hoping to do, and why it is so important. That way we get the crawl we expect, but still can pick up the film where VII left off.

There will definitely be a crawl. There was way too much left open at the end of TFA. They will fill us with something like "General Hux and Kylo Ren retreat to the FO HQ, The resistance packs up and heads to xxx system for xxx reason". The crawl wont be a problem. Regarding how it will start in space I've been thinking, the FO knew where the Resistance base was right? What if someone followed Rey to Ahch-to and we see that ship go down and land somewhere away from Rey and Luke?

Well, as 8 is going to continue right off where it ended Rian Johnson may break another tradition of the space shot with a ship. WIth 8 having the crawl as normal in space above Ahch-To and then it going down to where Rey is giving Luke his old Lightsaber, but looking at the 2nd possibility I can see that is also quite likely.

I agree, as it took lets say 3 weeks to travel to Ahch-To, alot has happened in that time.

    This:

    1. Crawl, camera pans: Kylo Ren's shuttle returns to First Order Capital World. Massive fleet assembling. Wreckage of Republic starships (alleged counter attack). Shuttle lands -Snoke

    More likely:

    Space Battle!

    2. Rey's scene with Luke

Don't hold your breath for space battles. TFA had basically zero space battles. There were battles, but they took place in atmospheres. The short production timeline eliminates time for large scale animation, which is a space battle. All the fight sequences in TFA took place close to and mostly in atmospheres.

Pssst........I saw some production photos at the Future Filmmaker Panel at Celebration London. I listened carefully to what mr. Ryan Johnson told us when he commented on those images. And mark my word: Episode VIII will have an epic space battle!

Edit: it is actually much more difficult to create and render in atmosphere air battles than it is to produce space battles. For example, the Hoth Battle was the most difficult thing to pull off in the entire original trilogy.

I hope you are right, I would like to see an epic space battle. Even in Star Trek, JJ almost never shows ships in space. he doesn't seem to like it. JJ's star trek films are amazingly terrestrial.

I know a bit about filmmaking, but an not an animator by trade. In VII they used helicopters and planes to capture movements and then animated over those.

Keep in mind the early on action will probably not include Kylo as he is injured and Snoke wants to "complete his training". Juuuust sayin.

If I was to bet my money, it would be on that. I doubt we will go to Ach-h To (or however you spell it) right away. They would want to establish whatever happened to Hux, Ren and Phasma first and as Kylo sets out to complete his training with Snoke, we will then go to Rey about to begin hers with Luke.

Agreed. It may not be a lengthy scene (so then things can get back to Luke and Rey), but I definitely expect Ep. VIII to begin in space with Kylo Ren and General Hux.

It's a possibility because I read that Rian was there during the Ach-To scenes for TFA .

It will start with Hux and Kylo Ren... then, later, we will jump back to Rey & Luke.

I think this will be the first Star Wars Episode that will start BEFORE the last scene of a previous instalment takes place.

They have made it extremely clear that the movie will start with Rey and Luke, exactly where the last one left off. Except for an opening crawl they will be the first thing we see.

Alright then. I wonder if they will indeed have to break with the "ship in space" tradition, too...

Unless the "ship in space" is the one that followed the Falcon to Ach-To......
