Since the release of Rogue One, the moderators have been kicking around suggestions for how long we should hide spoilers behind the various spoiler walls we have here in the Cantina. That conversation opened up questions about our spoiler policy in general. For instance, how much time must pass before people can openly talk about Rebels episodes? Or how much time can people openly talk about books and comics without worrying about using spoiler tags?

This was spurred by a couple of things. The untimely passing of Carrie Fisher led to some Cantina members posting images from Rogue One in a non-spoiler thread, despite the fact that the movie had been out for less than two weeks at the time. Since then, I've seen heavy spoilers in thread titles for Rebels episodes that have not been out for very long.

So we thought this should be a community-wide discussion. How long should spoilers be protected behind spoiler tags? What do you guys think?

Remember that we have two ways of concealing spoilers. The first is a spoiler prefix:

Spoilers can be openly discussed in this thread.

The second is coding that hides spoilers within posts:

Like this. This is a spoiler. You are spoiled now. Don't you regret reading this?

This is used in threads that aren't marked as containing spoilers.

We reached a general consensus that movies should be given three weeks before being able to openly talk about details. But what about books, comics, cartoons, and video games?

What do you guys think? Do you agree with us? Have a different opinion? Let's make the Cantina's spoiler policy together.

TV and movies are differnt...for tv i think about a week or so is appropriate to hide behind spoilers but about 1 month is more than enough for films. For books, I think that should be an open forum because people can read it at totally different times

What if plot points are used as thread titles? Should there be a time limit on that?

theh there should be something like, "SPOILER: *________* and then when people hover over the title it will show what the spoiler is instead of having a spoiler thread...so much easier

This is an important topic that I'd really appreciate some input on, so I've moved this thread here for the time being. Please feel free to chime in about what you think our spoiler policy should be.

    Thanks!

I think once the film / tv show has been released it should just be open to discussion right away.

If you were that worried about seeing spoilers for a movie that is already out in the cinemas then you shouldn't be going on a Star Wars forum, people want to talk about what they just watched after they watch it.

If Roque One was out for a week say why would I click on the Roque One comments section on here if I had not seen it yet ? What else is there to read that won't ruin the movie for me?

Welcome to the Cantina, and thanks for sharing your opinion.

I've got some thoughts on a couple things you said, but I want to wait until others have a chance to chime in as well. I'm hopeful that more people are interested in helping us shape our spoiler policy.

I agree with alex27. If we are here in the Cantina it's because we can't get enough of SW and we just want to go wild talking about the movie or the books, comics oe episodes that just came out. It's far easier as a fan who wants to avoid spoilers to just avoid the Cantina in those two or three days before they see the movie or tv episodes or read the comics, books ect than to have the hundreds of members here limit themselves on what they write. Wise fans that wish to avoid spoilers should stay far from SW sites cause there is always a chance no matter how slim that a simple comment may ruin a major plot moment.

A action figure, a comic or even a darn CD with the crummy Qui Gon's Noble End followed by Qui Gon's Funeral can easily ruin a great unexpected moment in a movie so we fans must learn to avoid many things if we don't want to be spoiled.

I think fans should just avoid the Cantina until they see or read the new thing that came out. Otherwise it's just as you said Jmjowers, a simple post title is enough to ruin a surprise. Logging on to the Cantina and seeing a ''I Wish Han Hadn't Been Killed'' or ''Luke's Few Seconds In TFA'' can be a real drag.

Agreed with the above, at least for the most part: if other Cantina members wish to avoid, say, discussion on a new film or TV show, then they could simply avoid the Cantina until a later date when they have seen the film.

However, citing "Qui-Gon's Noble End", I certainly think that spoiler tags should be in place for apparent leaks (across the board really), and especially if it's a pretty obvious blunder on the part of Lucasfilm (again, citing "Qui-Gon's Noble End" here), though we haven't seen anything quite like that since the new wave of films - and I doubt that we will.

I really like that. It makes viewing spoilery titles a conscious decision.

Why not make spoiler discussions a password protected forum?

I know that seems a little extreme but you can't just wander into it and be spoiled without a password

When a new post is created with the SPOILER PREFIX, the actual subject should be covered too, therefore nobody is instantly spoiled and only if they hover over the title to reveal it are they in trouble.

No new forum areas needed, no passwords, just cover the post title until you hover over it.

Edit the subject header to say spoilers from post#3536 onwards for example.

I think it should be obvious that when a person hasn't watched a released movie, episode, he shouldn't come to The Cantina until he sees it. This place is for us to discuss SW and therefore it's obvious their will be spoilers FAST. I myself disappeared last year and this year from the Cantina for the time of TFA and Rogue One's release.

it's great that you've brought us in to help @jmjawors

i think that 3 weeks covers most bases for most things. it first and foremost needs to be manageable for you guys.. so don't go setting 1 week for tv, 2 weeks for.. etc etc.

I think the coded spoiler tags within posts are fine the way they are. i've never really thought that they needed titles tbh as the spoiler should be related to the topic of the thread. If you are in a thread called 'Who is Snoke?' then a spoiler written within that thread should be a spoiler about that subject. General rumor threads are the pro for having the title mind.. so we prob need to keep it.

thread titles.. if i'm being honest, there isn't a great solution to someone selecting 'spoiler' as the category and then putting "C3pio is Rey's father" in the thread title. you can't fix stupid ;)

like @*Definetly Not A Sith Lord* - i avoid the forum for a week or so before a major release.

I haven't had much time to address this topic over the last couple of weeks, but I appreciate everyone who contributed. I want to keep this open a bit longer so others may weigh in as well.

    In other words ----> bump!

    Some feedback...

I like the idea of opaque thread titles (for those with a spoiler prefix) and everyone being extra cautious for a few weeks after content has been released.

I understand why some might suggest that people wanting to avoid spoilers would do well to avoid the site altogether (browse at your own risk etc), but I don't see a need to isolate/exclude potential members when it doesn't take much effort - a tag here or heading prefix there - to ensure everyone is happy.

The current system has worked pretty well in my experience here. Posters actively utilise spoiler tags/preifxes (or maybe it's the mods doing a good job of tidying up), safe spaces for spoiler-free discussions are pretty clearly defined, there seems to be a healthy and generally polite culture of notifying/reminding new members or ignorant posters of forum guidelines, and a general awareness that when unsure, spoiler warnings are the best default.

For what it's worth I managed to happily negotiate SWNN and The Cantina and enjoy rampant speculation while avoiding major spoilers for TFA and RO - a credit to your site. The odd time I've come across unwanted information in speculation threads I just stick to a strategy of telling myself the sources are suspect and dismissing the info as "speculation dressed as leak"!

Keep up the good work y'all.
