Star Blazers

Lets talk Japanese Anime specifically the phenomena known as "Star Blazers". I grew up watching these awesome Sci-Fi anime cartoons growing up.....did not fully understand the Japanese love for a sunken WWII battleship. The Yamato, a WWII battleship with the largest guns ever fitted to a ship (18.1 inch diameter shells!), was sunk late in the War.

Star Blazers tells the story of Earth in 2199, engaged in a terrible space war with the "Gamilons". Earth's ships are not strong enough to fight the latest versions of Gamilons.....so, they do the next most logical thing, right? They turn a sunken WWII battleship, the Yamato, into a spaceship!!

Any Star Blazers fans?????

Here is the full 2012 live action movie, "Space Battleship Yamato" - start at 20:12 for the scene where the Gamilons discover the Yamato, and send a missile to attack. This is the unveiling of the Yamato and the first firing of the awesome "wave motion gun".....love this movie!

 

Hey @Ruralfarmboy If you get a chance check out the full length movie of Space Battleship Yamato I put up there. This was made in 2012 and they did an AWESOME job of capturing the look and feel of the anime cartoon. Characters are well done, the score is great and the CGI looks pretty damn good.

My favorites scenes are the Yamato's first launch and firing the wave motion gun starting at 20:55......the first launch of the Black Tiger fighter squadron at 33:42 and the final sequence of them getting below the surface at the Planet Iskandar at 1:30:42. Love Captain Okita (Avatar in the US version) and his blowing scarf as the Yamato drops out of warp with the rest of the fighters then immediately warps again. Love this movie.....

This is a perfect example of how to take a beloved cartoon/TV show and turn it into a movie - unlike the DISASTER known as The Thunderbirds....
