It looks like Rogue One will be the first film that shows an Imperial Star Destroyer in atmosphere.

I'm wondering the purpose of this move (other than it looks REALLY cool)?

We know from Twilight Company that being in atmosphere requires a HUGE drain on power to the repulsors and engines taking power from weapons and shields. We also know from Cross Sections that the ISD does not have landing gear and that equipment is ferried down to planets for invasion.

So, what's the purpose of seeing an ISD in atmosphere if it's not landing or providing direct fire support?

To answer my own question, I'm guessing it's there for one of two reasons: 1, Intimidation or 2, to provided limited fire support when enemy strength is not a real threat to the ISD.

    Any other thoughts?

Technically speaking, The Force Awakens was the fist film to show an ISD in atmosphere. ;)

I think it's mostly for intimidation, and to show that this town on Jedha is beaten, that the Empire is in full control. They even get to block out the sun if they feel like it.

AOTC also had them in atmosphere, and actually on the ground being loaded by troops and supplies. They are actually Republic Assault ships, but we know they are just a early gen SD.

Those are from the Republic, though. Much smaller and different than the Imperial ships.

If the special effects had been good enough to put a Star Destroyer in atmosphere in the original trilogy, we probably would have seen it then. But to address the question of what was it doing in that particular scene in R1, it appears smaller ships are leaving the surface and going towards the Star Destroyer. Maybe those particular vessels are not designed to go into space and therefore requires the SD to be in atmosphere. It may also be an intimidation factor. But more than anything, I bet Gareth just thought it was a really bad-ass scene to shoot, which it is.

Yeah I agree, looks just awesome. Here a brief scene from the leaked Celebration trailer. Looks like more shuttles are around and constantly bring troops down and/or "resources" up. A shorter distance is sure an important factor.

Looks like the Star Destroyer is protecting a supply line. It appears that the turtle-shaped shuttles are transporting those orange crates -- which probably contain crystals -- to the Star Destroyer. So the Star Destroyer in this instance is the Star Warsian version of an armored truck parked outside a bank.

My guess it is supposed to intimidate the planets' inhabitants, so that no one from there would come up with an idea to rebel.
