Okay guys, let's discuss the Star Trek Reboot Continuity.
Anyone know any scoops of Star Trek 3 like if Shatner will appear or who the new villain is?
I'm hoping for the Borg or Q.

There were pretty strong indications that Shatner was going to appear in this one. But that was before Orci was pushed out. So, Much like Star Wars, I think we will find ourselves in a place where its hard to trust spoilers because you don’t know from what period in the production they are being pulled.

As for the question at hand? I do like the reboots, but for Trek I prefer the more contemplative tone of the originals. I’ve said it before around these parts, but DS9 is one of my top shows of all time (I am also a big fan of TOS and TNG, and even found some things to enjoy from Voyager). I love the character development, the allegory, and the philosophical debates that come from the low budget, long running, serialization of a sci-fi TV show. The new movies are fun popcorn flicks, but they don’t really feel like Star Trek to me. Maybe down the road we’ll get new TV shows based off the new continuity and be able to have the “best of both worlds” (Trek geek pun intended) but for now, I stick with the heavily inconsistent, but often great, old continuity as my favorite.

the latest news was that Worf was supposed to get his own show where he is the captain. so far it hasn't panned out. the network hasn't picked it up yet. I voted for the reboot because i believe they captured the spirit of star trek in a new light. they respected the original cast established personalities and did well to represent them in the new films. JJ made it cool to be a fan. whereas in the past star trek fans were nerds who live in basements. i agree, a Q movie would be awesome.

I heard "Captain Worf" was supposed to go on Netflix only but CBS/Paramount and Netflix couldn't come to an agreement.

I also heard of a CSI/NCIS in space kind of series taking place in the Delta Quadrant and a Grey's Anatomy in space kind of series as well, both taking place after Voyager.

Worf is a great side character but I’m not sure if he could sustain a show as the lead. The captain role needs to have more nuance so it can sustain the big stories. The other characters can have a more repetitive arc as you usually only shift focus to them 2-3 times per season and for smaller stories.

Worf on TNG was painfully repetitive and stiff. The stories got somewhat better on DS9, but still not to the point I think he could sustain a show.

I always liked the very old idea of Chief O'Brien teaching at the academy that was being floated around the end of the Voyager run. He was the type of character who I could see upped to a focal point provided the people around him were interesting and varied enough.

So, Star Trek 3 is going to be directed by Jeremy Lin (aka the dude who made The Fast and the Furious movies), it'll be written by Roberto Orci and Simon Pegg, and it may feature Bryan Cranston as a villain? This is gonna be either a massive trainwreck or the most entertaining film of all time!

I would love a TNG reboot either in movie form or in tv show form but i don't think it's been enough time since the show's end.

I think it was better this way. Would have been cancelled during filming ;)
Simon Peg as writer? I don't know if this is good or bad news.
Let's hope Peg will rewatch the complete TOS series.
I would do If I were him with a notepad and coffee.
May the force be with him, sorry I meant live long an prosper Scotty.

Pegg did co-write the Cornetto trilogy. Those films had some excellent drama and action mixed in with the comedy. How much of that drama was Wright and how much was Pegg is an unknown. But he's a smart guy and he loves sci-fi so I'm optimistic.

    Please add a both option.

But I enjoyed all the movies minus a few. I've seen pretty much all the Star Treks (even the first one the "Motion Picture") in the theaters minus I think Generations and a few others. I don't really consider myself I Trekky per se, I'm more of a Star Wars geek (minus the prequels and EU).

The 2009 JJ Reboot was fantastic. Very energetic film.

On the other hand Strek Into Darkness (I've said this before in other threads, so bare with me if read those) I did not like. Benedict Cumberbatch (great actor) but cast for the wrong part. Don't get me wrong his acting was good. But Khan was originally played by Ricardo Montalbán in both the series and the Wrath of Khan. The movie is supposed to take place before the episode "Star Seed". But it seems like they tried to shoe horn the story so that it catered to those who never seen the episode.

Also, to take the ending of the Wrath of Khan and only swap the characters around is just really bad writing. If hollywood wants to do that they won't get any money off me.

On Simon Pegg writing the next movie. I liked Shaun of the Dead, loved Hot Fuzz....World's End was not so good. World's End story was really bad. I know Simon Pegg is a huge Star Wars fan. But I'm probably not going to the theater to watch this one.
