After stumbling across this old advert some time ago (and finally having a reason to re-post it to the Cantina due to a fortuitous comment by @RoyleRancor over in the TLJ rumours thread), it occurred to me that there is a wealth of great media out there from across the now 4 decades we've enjoyed a GFFA... so I am taking the opportunity to start this thread in the hope that others will find some equally diverse, interesting or crazy examples of how SW has invaded every part of the media - particularly content from foreign markets, where local custom and culture seems to play a big part in how certain products and media are marketed.

Here's a few examples for starters:

A UK Palitoy ad from 1977 (for those too young to know, Palitoy were the European distributors for Kenner back in the day). I don't recall the Tusken* backpack (which looks more like the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead) ever making it to the UK market. (Note - the spelling on the ad referring to the residents of a northern Italy holiday destination as opposed to the Bantha loving Jundland Waste dwellers )

French fast-food chain Quick's amazingly unappetising burger promo to tie-in with the 2012 3D re-release of TPM... you really can resist the Burnt Side!

A more recent US Disney studios ad for SW Weekends
    [IMG]

From the tv/cinema ads for 2015's UK* Star Wars Battlefront media campaign (*not sure if this was same in all western territories?)

...and Nissan's 2016 tie-in promo for limited edition Rogue One badged SUVs. (I've got to admit I still don't get why manufacturers think there's a worthwhile marketing link between mundane real-world transport and a GFFA, but each to their own I guess!)

Star Wars marketing has been really weird at times. I guess it's just tapping into whatever is on the public consciousness at the moment. These companies know that people are thinking about Star Wars around the time of a movie's release, so they capitalize on it, even if it means unappetizing burgers and pointless tie-ins. Haha.

    ...and Duracell batteries?!?*

*to be fair, it was a well done advert and led to my daughter pleading for (and getting) a lightsaber that Christmas :p

I see nothing weird with the Duracell one.
That's exactly how I remember it being when I was that age playing with cardboard tubes.

Haha... indeed, they're not all weird... but i find the range of products and services that do get licensed fascinating.

Would Leia hair-buns on on a bear make anyone want to buy more toilet paper?

...or a gurning Gungan make any sane parent want to pay out for a bilious coloured, 'made with real fruit', but 'artificially flavoured' chew sweet for their younglings?!?

I may be getting carried away and I've no idea what it's advertising, but by great Kenobi's beard how did the Japanese get to a point where they decided old Goldenrod was kung fu capable?!?!

    This is just awesome³!!

There are some truly bizarre SW-branded products. Take a look at this knife block:

Here is the weirdest one - Death Star red cabbage.

I can't decide if that X-Wing knife block is insane (as in, "Look kids, knives!") or inspired genius... as in "Look kids, knives!!" :D

This 1983 vintage collectible looks a little freaky too...

More crazy merchandising/advertising from a GFFA...

First, one for the anti-vaxxers out there...

...a great example of the application of 'artistic interpretation' - a levitating R2, pin-head Vader, Luke apparently foreshadowing Ezra's saber hilt and reason #47 for not combing a Wookiee
    [IMG]

Why have I never seen this before! My inner 9yr old is sobbing uncontrollably that I never had the chance for a speeder bike ride

I can't see a possible way that speeder ride is allowed today without extensive lawsuits and mommy-blog posts about how dangerous it is.

    Amen!

I was looking at this earlier and realising how much better the Kenner line was in the US... of all the things featured in this 1979 brochure, only the X-Wing, Vader's TIE, the Troop Transporter and figures made their way to the UK. One of my school friends had an aunt who lived in Chicago, so she sent him things that weren't available here every Christmas and birthday... the b*stard! :D

Dam I would have loved that Sandcrawler.

Iam also sure that the Death Star play set was available over here as well but then I lived near London so it may have only made it into the larger toy stores.

An example of how a depiction Vader from the late 1970's anticipated a million doe-eyed cat face memes...

...and kids could 'make' their friends...

...and advertisers were cheekily dressing children in 60's Star Trek costumes to push Star Wars toys
