lol I came into this thread exclusively to say that the third-person, present tense writing style of this book gave me a headache of epic proportions. Looks like it is audiobook all the way on this one.

I really like the extract. but been a bit disappointed by the novels so far. They been bit all filler... I'm hoping we get some good stuff in aftermath and not just a build up to the battle front game. But it does look good

I'll never watch RotJ with the same eyes again! It seems that only a few minutes after the end, carnage happens on Coruscant...

GL put the Coruscant ending of RotJ in as a "grand finale".......Now they need to just go with the original RotJ ending then.......

But then the statue coming down wouldn't have context. :)

The end of ROTJ captured the joy of the galaxy. That's what we see there, and that ending will always be a super happy one to me. Even knowing how Aftermath begins. If we thought about it (or read the EU), we knew that that joy wasn't permanent. To me, the scenario immediately following that statue coming down makes total sense.

I like it too. Something like that was mentioned in the EU. But seeing it described in canon was shocking and mindblowing!

I enjoyed this excerpt. Hard to tell how good the rest of the book will be from this, but I was already planning to read the book when it comes out in September, and this just makes me more excited.

I like how they are including Rae Sloane in this book. We're not just getting extra adventures for the movie characters in the new canon, but we are getting major characters that appear in multiple books but not in the movies. So we get an actual expanded universe in the new canon, not just movie merchandise.

There seemed to be a lot of short sentences in the excerpt. It almost read like a poem reading you might hear at a hippy coffee house. I'm still eagerly awaiting this book, though.

So how many years after ROTJ is this? I know the 'prologue' is the same day as the battle of endor, but what about the Wedge's part? Might be interesting, for sure some TFA characters will appear in this one?

Hard to say. It seems fairly immediate. I wonder if we'll get some sharper context from the Alliance's process of setting up a new government, or in the Imperials' attempts to regroup.

I am half looking forward to this, it should be better than Truce at Bakura, the story seems to make more sense anyway!
Reading it has given me a bit of hope for the new canon. The titles of the newer books lately leave a lot to be desired, not very star wars if you get me.

The writing style strikes me as a bit amateurish, so I don't know how I will get on with that as I've not read anything written in that style. Again, it isn't very star wars!

Don't hold me to this but I think I read somewhere that Wedge's mission was a few months after the Battle of Endor.

I liked it. The style might not be for everyone, but I liked it - it seemed immediate and urgent, very cinematic. Mind you, that doesn't mean that the book would be good, but I am optimistic. Plus, I crave the new events in the galaxy, new characters, new planets... I liked the connection with A New Dawn - Captain Sloane is now Admiral. I wonder what other characters from the movies/canon we will get not only in this book but in the entire trilogy. Will we see what happens to the big three? Less than two months. I cannot wait.

Totally agree, people saying that battles continuing after the ending of RotJ somehow invalidate its ending are simply not thinking about it very hard. Yes, they destroyed the second Death Star and killed The Emperor, that is plenty of reason for joyous celebration, but it would be silly to think that the Empire simply ceased to exist because you cut of the head. The way it was handled in the old Legends material and the way it is being handled here always made perfect sense to me.

Allow me to defend Lucas and company for a moment with the Corusant celebration and the removal of the Palpatine statue that we all saw at the end of ROTJ:

In 1991, with the dissolution of the USSR, several statues of Lenin and Stalin were torn from their pedestals. People celebrated in the streets. That said, in the 20+ years since, there have been numerous internal power struggles, all sorts of shady politicking, and a glut of horribly corrupt people (many of whom were part of the USSR) who rushed into fill the void left by their deposed predecessors.

A statue of Saddam Hussein was toppled in Firdaus Square (Iraq) on April 9, 2003. It’s now 2015, and the last time I checked, things the Middle East aren’t exactly wonderful.

Piggy backing off what many have pointed out, after a celebration of the overthrow of a regime, there is an aftermath (pun intended), and there is plenty of opportunity for things to go awry.

Just canceled my order of this book after reading this. I couldn't stomach more than a few lines. What the hell is Disney thinking?? Who approves of this blast?
