Barnes and Noble has a vague synopsis of the first "Journey to the Force Awakens" novel up on their website. While it is vague, it does offer a little bit of insight as to what the Empire did after we last saw them. It doesn't look like they are just going to lay down and give up just because the Emperor and Vader are gone. I wonder who that lone rebel scout will be? I think these novels are going to be a really cool way to get us up to speed on the 30 year gap. They will serve as a sort of extended detailed pre crawl to the crawl. Let the speculation begin!

"Journey to The Force Awakens. The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.
Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.
And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting..."

As much as I'm enjoying Star Wars: Rebels, this is the time period I'm most interested in seeing play out. I hope the rumors of an animated series taking place between Episode VI and VII turns out to be true. In the meantime, looks like I'll have lots of reading to do this year.

I think these books will be such a cool way to catch us up on things even though I know they will purposely only hint at things that really connect to TFA. This will also really help eliminate the need for flashbacks and such in TFA. They might do something in the movie because they can't expect everyone to have read the books but this will definitely help and for viewers who have questions after they have seen the movie they can use the books as a guide as to why what was what.

Well, something is new here.... So, the fact that Vader and Palpatine died onboard the Death Star is a rumor... That brings tons of possibilities... Copycats... Etc.

Great so the people in the Star Wars Galaxy are probably posting polls on if they think Vader and Palpatine are really dead and if THEY will be the "Ancient Fear" sorry kittens.

It is interesting they describe it as RUMORED but I don't think it'll really play into anything other then them confirming their deaths by the end of the book.

Pretty exciting stuff. This will be the first canon post-ROTJ material. Should help flesh out the story of TFA.

I would like see a aftermath scene just like in the marvel movies off something connecting episode 8 to 7, I know Im trying to evolve this movie even though it never happened in the previous two trilogys but I think it should happen just for this trilogy even if it might connect to a spin-off.

from the Point of View of the survivors of the Empire it is rumored at first because unless they saw them die they wouldn't "know" they are dead. if the book literally starts right after the end of the battle of Endor it could get some good millage playing on the idea that the empire is trying to find out what happened to the two people in charge. The meeting then happens to settle the status quo and also set a path forward, which might lead us to who is in control of the empire and if there really were only two sith, perhaps Vader and Palpatine each kept a couple not quite apprentices around?

Possibly. The idea of a super secret sort of apprentice could be cool i don't want to see anything like The force Unleashed go down and I'm sure JJ/Kasdan were careful to avoid anything they felt wasn't "theirs". I'm sure they will have some type of search go down though so see if Vader or the emperor escaped the Death Star before it was destroyed like Vader did in ANH.

That was the same rumor that Rebels would only be about 4 seasons long, right? I definitely could see that now with the way Rebels season one shaped up

With books and a possible animated series taking care of the 30 year gap it's going to be interesting to see where the spinoffs fall

This book will be very interesting and I'm excited to see it. 30 years is a long time and it will be interesting to see how many years the book spans. It seems pretty clear that it begins shortly after ROTJ but how close to TFA does it bring us. I figure it will help us see how the Empire regroups, how the alliance forms the new government and the conflict between them. After reading the book I believe some of the concept art like the downed AT-AT and Star Destroyers will become more clear

They are putting out 20 books in the series! It supposedly will lead right up to TFA but won't give enough details for us to really know enough about the actual plot of TFA

Other books - reference tomes - will supply photos, CG models, concept art and the TFA plot - before December 18.
