I had a great time playing SW BF2 today. The visuals are out of this world, and the campaign is really good, too bad the game is plagued by a loot crate progression system.

EA/Dice stated that the heroes were going to cost more if you want to play them in different eras. I would image they cost less in their respective eras. Haven't had time to put in quality time on the game but from what I did play well worth the wait.

The original Battlefront 2 didn't make you spend extra money to unlock heroes.

So once again, why change something that didn't need to be changed?

Ok so my copy arrived down today. Been playing the campaign naturally, don't like online play. This is something I've been effectively waiting for since the 2003 after I completed Republic Commando; an FPS Star Wars game with a solid story and gorgeous set pieces. It's been FAR too long. Especially since its story is effectively a sequel to Return of the Jedi, so nice to see that story unfolding, even if it suffers a bit from Rebels-style rushed story-telling. So far enjoying it, though it's rather linear, but then again, sandbox worlds were not the standard when Republic Commando was around, least of all Dark Forces, so having it quite old school I guess is nice.

Anyway once my eyes were red and square I decided to just look around the game's menus for five minutes before shutting it off but I can't see anything resembling skirmish for offline 2 player? One of the things my son and I loved most on Battlefront 1 was split-screen walker assault, playing co-op together; now I understand 'Galactic Assault' with its slightly more dynamic objectives effectively takes the place of Walker Assault, and that's fine, it's nice for the objectives to intensify whilst still trying to destroy a lumbering tank of some description, but I'm not seeing a Galactic Assault mode for offline two-player? Just various "kill all the baddies" Survival modes - am I blind and not looking in the right area or just not choosing the right options for a custom arcade match, or is there not any way to take down huge walkers & tanks in offline split screen against bots?

Seems weird to remove one of the best things in a game for its sequel (if that's the case) and it looks like it could be a huge disappoint for me and my boy. Perhaps I'm just old-fashioned but I like my sequels in the spirit of Mortal Kombat 2 or Super Mario Bros 3, the "same, but better and WAY more" method of development. Feels incredibly counterproductive to have the best bits removed, if that is indeed the case :(

I'm one those guys who might take an ethical stand and just play other games, despite having pre-ordered it.. These kinds of crappy micro-transactions should just not exist in gaming. I was really hyped for this game and I am really disappointed that I trusted that this game would be amazingly well received. I will rather play Battlfield 1 and Kotor than this nightmare.

That sucks. All I guess I can do is hold out hope that it gets added in the future (happened to the original), because taking down huge vehicles in co-op was such a joy for us, some true Star Wars father and son bonding for us that had him beaming ear to ear and high-fiving me often (my boy's not a big Star Wars fan, but Walker Assault got him WAY more interested in it and asking for the AT-M6 Lego for Christmas, which I've bought him). He was hoping we'd be taking down the enormous AT-M6's together this weekend, instead I know he's going to be disappointed and we'll be back to Battlefront 1 for more of the same old Walker Assault on the same old 7 maps. Plus I like being able to learn the maps offline at my own rate, so if or when I do ever go online, I'm at least familiar with where to go.

Maybe I was just delusional, but as stated, I was kinda hoping we'd get everything of BF1 and more in this, was expecting to finally enjoy large Scariff maps offline and see some AT-ATs stomping through the mangroves and U-Wings zooming overhead but instead I'm still left wanting and sadly now I've got a disappointed son too.

The campaign was the other major selling point for me, but I'm seriously concerned I'm going to be through the campaign way too soon (feels about a third of the length of Republic Commando); I believe I'm already half-way (based on the rewards boxes listed) and that was only one evening's play. I wouldn't mind if it was really replayable; I battled through Republic Commando's early Geonosis levels repeatedly, dozens of times, due to the sheer fun of the set-pieces, but this somehow lacks that game's feeling of adrenaline-pumping combat, endearing characters and somehow actually feels less bombastic even though it obviously looks and sounds better.

I'm also disappointed I have to keep playing as heroes in the campaign. I really appreciate seeing what happened after ROTJ but I really wanted to see the story of Iden Versio be more in-depth and to play as her from the Imperial perspective for longer (physically and - spoiler warning - narratively too; you unsurprisingly become a rebel). Plus, I always play the game first-person (including the vehicle cockpits) because I like the immersion, so hate being pulled out into third-person and so each time I was, I kept feeling I was at best back into the realms of less immersive Star Wars games like Bounty Hunter or Force Unleashed, and at worst, playing as Luke swinging my saber haphazardly in the vague general direction of random spawning beetles felt like something from the X-Box's dreadful Obi Wan game. I kind of get the camera switch for the Jedi characters, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight was really awkward with saber combat from first-person, but don't understand why first-person isn't available for blaster-carrying heroes like Leia and Han (the latter of whom looks so awkward when walking whilst crouching).

Anyway, I'll try it again tonight, try some online play and hopefully find some better enjoyment. Fingers crossed, I don't like being too negative or pessimistic - but since we're not getting any other Star Wars games these days, there's no other contemporary options except Lego Force Awakens. Sigh, I'm really happy with what Disney's doing with the movies, but when it comes to the games, I really miss Lucasarts.

Well Lucasarts had been in a deplorable state for years. Empire at War was the last good game they published. The rest was either mediocre or rubbish. I really love Battlefront 2015 though. I've played it for 300+ hours, the gun play was spot on, it performed well and there was generally a lot to do and see. But no singleplayer. I think Battlefront 2 (2017) would have done well, at least in reception terms, if not for the lootboxes. Respawn entertainment is making a Star Wars action adventure game with lightsabers etc., so there's still hope.

Oh don't get me wrong, they made some complete crap that's for sure haha, I mostly mean the Lucasarts of the 90s who gave us X Wing, TIE Fighter, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight etc. Plus it's the variety and volume of titles I really miss. Quality over quantity always wins out, but when there's only two Star Wars titles available (three if BF1 & 2 are considered separate entities), I'm missing a time when we'd get The Clone Wars, Republic Commando, Rogue Squadron 3, Jedi Knight 3 and KOTOR all appearing on various formats and offering different experiences during a similar time frame and all were solid.

Anyway, I've just been trying to play BF2 online and keep getting killed within seconds (and tragically discovered I can't even choose a map); I'm so used to BF1 I keep trying to use my jet pack and this star card and crates business really confuses me, I don't know what I'm doing with it half the time. I agree the first one played so tightly, this one however (probably just because I'm not used to it) just doesn't feel as sharp. But then how has everyone else got so good so quickly when it plays quite differently (at least in the subtle ways that matter) yet has only just come out?

Or am I just getting old with the reflexes of an elderly arthritic dog?

There's also the game being worked on at EA Vancouver, though if the Kotaku article on Visceral's closure is anything to go by we won't see anything from them for a while as it sounds like they're having to start over from scratch.

Seriously, am I stupid or something? I don't get this star-card nonsense. So I'm playing the campaign, I'm at Cloud City and need to take down an AT-ST; I've got a weapons crate to adjust my load out, and what I want is an Ion Torpedo or Smart Rocket like in BF1 for taking out a walker. Good old fashioned heavy artillery. The good stuff. Instead I've got a collection of digital Top Trumps that when I equip a 'brawler' to L1, it removes my thermal detonator and replaces it with a 90s guide to dating from The Game to R1. So I apply a 'vanguard' card and it replaces my gun with an ironing board, my secondary weapon becomes a used toothbrush whilst a 5 year subscription to Cosmopolitan is mapped to L1. So I change my 'vanguard' for a 'livecamgirl' card and suddenly I'm armed with an empty pencil case, a Philips-headed screwdriver and the script to an episode of Noel's House Party from 1991 becomes my L1 + R1 super power.

Why can't I just have a varied array of multi-task heavy weapons applied to my load-out that is beneficial to my mission and the enemies I'll face, like in the last game (Walker Assault for example is favoured by the 'Annihilator' load-out), instead of this bizarre "apply this and you'll lose that" top-trumps crap that doesn't make any logical sense to my ageing brain?

    Seriously though... am I stupid?
