Star Wars: Before the Awakening (obvious spoilers)

I loved Rey's story. it really conveyed at how lonely she felt and explains why she is so defensive and mistrusting of others. Especially after having a ship she rebuilt stolen by two other scavengers she befriended. Rey could not have predicted the two would ultimately aim to do what Rey was afraid to do, leave the planet - in the ship they fixed up. Also, her ability to fly and repair ships is well explained as she posesses a computer she has rebuilt which contains ship information and a flight sim!

 

He was a top cadet based on before the awakening and his cleaning duties were likely because of punishment. He showed a moral compass, which went against orders and got him in trouble. Phasma saying it was his first offense is likely covering her butt.

I liked Poe’s story best and based on the new tv series , resistance, his story will become relevant again for it seems to be near that time.

 

Bloodline provides a lot more on that. Basically, there was a "centrist" faction in the Senate, that secretly supported the FO.
