I don't mind the films being pushed back. 6 more months of production time means a better movie. I'd rather they take the time to make it good than make it fast.

I think it means they have all this down to a well tuned machine now and that 6 months really doesn't make that much of a difference. I believe they will have the filming 'in the can' so to speak by the end of this summer, which means they could probably have a pretty good rough cut done by the end of the year. If god forbid there was a Rogue One scenario where the story wasn't working, they would have plenty of time for reshoots.

This gives some credibility to the rumour that Episode IX will start shooting this summer.

I think they're prepping to release more than one SW film in a year, potentially. This could especially be the case if, as I suspect, Han Solo ends up being a somewhat "smaller" Star Wars movie. Rogue One had the scope of an episode film, but that doesn't mean all these standalone movies will.

Also, this means that there will only have been a year and a half between Episode 8 and 9. That's the smallest gap between two episode films thus far.

This is actually a brilliant point! That's why I love the cantina so much - talking to everyone who loves the same thing as me purely about our shared love - I love all the ideas we bounce off of each other here in this community

I hope not! I don't want two or even more SW movies in a year. They should remain with one movie to have something special every year. Also the marketing of several SW movies would be very confusing for the casual audience, wouldn't it?

I don't understand where people get this notion from. Yes, the Han Solo film will be five months after Epiosde VIII but don't forget that so far all the previous films were intended for a May release date. They simply didn't make them on time so they got bumped to December. If they had truly tried to make more than one film per year the announced release date for Epiosde IX would have been December 2018. Besides, don't forghet that Lucasfilm is directly involved into production of comic books, novels, TV shows and video games and newest Indiana Jones film. That's quite a lot to oversee. Remember, Marvel Studios takes care only after films (the TV division is in some bizarre relationship with Marvel Studios, so let's treat them as a separate entity.)

PS. Also, don't forget, SW film are meant to be an event and making more than one year makes them lose that special feeling. Besides, the whole insider report posted on SWNN a couple of weeks ago supports the theory that Lucasfilm is not intending to make more than 1 SW film a year for the foreseeable future.

For clarity, I'm not saying I want multiple SW films in a year. I'm just saying that I could seem them going this route, or at least trying it.

To be honest, because The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and now The Last Jedi have had December release dates, and because they've been successful in that time slot, I don't see the need for them to go back to May now, even if that was the original plan. Keeping December would make the scheduling feel more cohesive. On the other hand, if this means we have less time to wait for Ep. IX, I can't honestly complain (hence my "Yay!" above).

I can do one saga and one stand alone per year. It's been what four months since R1, and I'm already craving my next SW fix!

I agree that having multiple movies on different timelines will confuse the general audience... BUT I DONT CARE!! My post is about what I want!! :)

I think May releases make a lot of sense to me for a whole host of reasons.
    • Films make more money that time of year
    • Early summer release will tie into hype for their new Star Wars land park
    • They can then both release and push the merchandise for Christmas without having to hold back because of potential spoilers, DVD can also hit the Christmas market.
    • Winter season can be used for TV series, animated and hopefully live action
    • The next few years will have to compete with the Avatar sequels. Two big films fighting over IMAX time.
I'm all for May releases anyway, I tend to have more time to enjoy the build up and multiple viewings whereas over Christmas I've other things on my mind. It's a nice bonus that as a result we get a bumper period with 2 films within 5 months of each other.

I don't see them moving to 2 films a year though, I think Kathleen Kennedy made it pretty clear that they don't want to over saturate and in fact they plan to give the SW movies a small break at someone point.

TLJ was penciled in for a late May release then got pushed back to December so that it'll make as much money as possible so there's no doubt the same will happen with IX.

The sooner the better. I don't mind a May 2019 release date at all. I won't have to wait as long to get answers to question from Episode 8 or anything that wasn't answered in Episode 7

I'm sort of torn because I welcome an earlier release in May, which means they'll release the BluRay around November. I can't wait to do that 4,5,6,7,8,9 marathon!

But part of me likes them opening in December as I have so many fond memories of December/January 2015/16 release of TFA. Christmas = Star Wars, how about that for a metaphor regarding our childhood?

What I find fascinating about that official announcement is that Derek Connolly isn't listed as the writer for Episode IX.

It's worth the wait. We're all going to see it no matter when it's released and they know that.
