The Sequel Trilogy and it's themes as told by George Lucas in the 80's, only to deny them years later. (Gary Kurtz and Mark Hamil as well)

    • Episode VII would begin roughly 20 (or perhaps 30-40) years after the end of Return of the Jedi (according to Lucas in 1980 and 1982)
    • R2-D2 and C-3PO would be the only characters who might continue through all nine films (Lucas in 1980, 1981 and 1983).
    • The trilogy would deal with the rebuilding of the Republic. (Lucas in 1980).
    • "It's like a saga, the story of a group of people, a family" (Lucas in 1980).
    • The focus would be on Luke Skywalker's journey to becoming the premier Jedi knight, with Luke's sister (who was not Leia) appearing in Episode VIII, and the first appearance of the Emperor, and Luke's ultimate confrontation with him, in Episode IX(a storyline as planned pre-1980, according toA New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz).
    • Luke would have a romantic relationship with a female love interest (Lucas in 1988).
    • The main theme of the trilogy would be moral and philosophical problems, such as the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong, justice, confrontation, and passing on what you have learned (Lucas in 1983 and 1989).
    • The key actors, Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Ford as Solo, and Fisher as Princess Leia, would appear, in their 60s or 70s (Lucas in 1983).
    • In Episode IX, Hamill would cameo, "like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope" (according to Hamill, in 2004).
    • "The other one ā€” what happens to Luke afterward ā€” is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If Iā€™m really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke" (Lucas in 1980).

This one I think is my favorite, because it might deal with Anakin's creation, Darth Plagueis, and a host of other things. I think I will also post it under the Darth Plagueis thread as well to help everyone brainstorm on that thread (also from Wookiepedia):

An interview from May 2002 has another interesting quote from Lucas where he makes reference to a possible future film: "The challenge for me is telling a six-part story: so in Episode I there are things that I have to get in that refer to Episode VII ā€” no, hang on, we're not there yet. I mean Episode IV."

I love that one. I am really hoping that Luke is already the premiere Jedi that Lucas always wanted him to be. Nice post man I have not read a lot of these.

I think some of that (especially the part about Luke's sister and finally confronting the Emperor) ended up being condensed into RotJ when George had finally had enough and decided to take a 'daddy break' until the prequels. I look forward to a lot of the moral gray area stuff and the ethereal Luke thing...a King Arthur death? Off to Avalon?

I think there's something to be said about (I think it was a Filoni quote talking about George's frame of mind at the end of TCW) George trying to explain the force and how the Jedi/Sith interact with it. If that was something he really wanted to get into the canon before retirement, I would expect there to be some history and physics lessons in his treatments.

Good post; this is the meaty stuff about the sequels that (to me) trumps plot details and leaked pictures. The spoiler I really want is George's treatments.

I agree. Maybe it will be for a final confrontation with Plagueis now. I am not sure, though. As far as Luke, that will be interesting.

    That's interesting.

    Thanks, likewise and same here!

My interest is particularly high on who the "Other" character is. Maybe it ended up being Leia but, from that story I just linked GL gives impression it's not Leia and says that it's a character we already see in the prequels.

Maybe Jar Jar learned the ways of the force. :p

Hey man just gave that link a read and it had some mind blowing stuff in there.
This line really stuck with me for some reason "I'm only doing [ Revenge of the Jedi] because I started it and now I have to finish it. The next trilogy will be someone else's vision." This interview was done in 1982 which means that JJ was 16 at the time. If you had of told him that this statement would one day be about him and that the star wars universe would be in his hands it would blow his freaking mind!

When you see the final episode of the clone wars show (the yoda arc) yoda is told that there is another skywalker. at this point there are no luke, no leia. So I have a feeling that Anakin has a brother/sister.

I read that George Lucas biographer was show treatments for prequel and sequel trilogy's in the 80s and had to sign a disclosure agreement. He said out of the 3 trilogy's the last was the best. Would be good to know if these are anything like what will be released

Would defiantly recommend reading the book in full. I got it from amazon onto kindle. I'm a Star Wars nut and thought I pretty much knew all the nerdy facts. Then I read this! Really good. One thing. The author seems to have it in with Lucas for some reason. Maybe he wouldn't give him a interview or something. Anyway. Still a really good read

If it's the book I'm thinking of, I believe the author was a regular on a SW forum I used to frequent awhile back. (Jedi77-83, can you refresh my poor ol' memory on that? I think he posted as "zombie" something.)

Anyway, if it's the same guy, I don't think he just blindly had it in for Lucas so much as he'd kind of "gotten a look at how the sausage was made", so to speak, and had some criticisms based on that. But he did have some fascinating perspective and a lot of "making of" details that I'e not seen elsewhere, some of which he shared with us in that forum.

It's secret history of Star Wars by Michael kaminski. I thought was really good. It was published before the Disney take over and has a really good chapter on a sequel trilogy. It also talks about the Star Wars films being part of a much larger fabric. Like a tome. Journal of the whills. I definetly recommend it. My name is not Michael kaminski.

some interesting stuff there! my favorite quote has to be from Hamill:
"They always wanted to set up their own little James Bond series -- taking the environment George has set up but keeping it limitless in terms of what the characters can do. For the sequel, he's going to add new characters. It won't be a direct sequel to the first story; it'll be a series of adventures, you know, in that galaxy... If the Star Wars series runs as long as I think they're going to run, I will be Ben Kenobi's age when I do the last one!"

that's pretty much exactly what Disney is setting up! he called it like a true Jedi master! (luke)
