OFFICIAL NEWS Star Wars Episode VIII Delayed until 12/15/17

Discussion in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' started by Rieekan, Jan 20, 2016.

?

Why do you think Star Wars VIII was pushed back to december 15, 2017?

  1. To push it further away from Rogue one.

  2. To allow more time to make a better movie.

  3. Both.

I dunno... I could see the re-writes impacting production schedule & I was thinking it might be a tad rushed given how the film will only have something like 10 months of post production. I just hope the time is wisely spent!

I'm glad to hear this news... I liked the X-mas time release. All the family was in town so it gave me & my bro in law a chance to recap what we just saw :)

I fear they are changing the story because they are reading things on message boards. You have a new big 3 how was ep 8 not about them? Or not focused on them. Does that mean it was Luke heavy and they underestimated the new trio. I doubt it. This smells like rewrites based on what they think is "popping" on the Internet and thats what makes me scared. LOST and FRINGE started to suck when they went down that rabbit hole.

TFA doesn't compare with FOTR though.

Basically, the entire thing is finished. IF they are utilizing the newest BFX tech the. It shouldn't take more than 10-11 months for FONISHED VFX. If they're only having minimal edits then it's LITERALLY a for the money which Disney is notorious for .

FOTR didn't get nominated (although Sir Ian did get a Best Supporting Actor nom for playing Gandalf). ROTK did.

To me I loved VII, no problems at all with it. No need to explain the fate of every character who appears on screen. The problem, rewrites aside, is that 16 months for a star wars film is less hand half the 36 months lucas took. JJ's film had virtually no space combat scenes. All the pilot fights took place in atmosphere mostly. I expected this. I would rather they take until December so as not to rush effects. I don't know what they are rewriting. If I had to guess, it probably has to do with how much people liked Poe and Finn together. So they probably increase Poe's screen time in VIII. This is actually quite a big deal depending. Basically it could involve adding a whole new plot line to the film. I doubt Rey's role changes much. My guess is the running time of the film probably just went up to two and a half hours. Doubt it is more or less dark than it would have been.

Damn. I love it and hate it. It's good because it gives them more time to work and not rush it out but now we have to wait longer..

(Can't find an image but you all know what Kylo did when they lost the droid and Rey escaped, that's me right now lol;))

I think that "rush" isn't a strong word because VIII has been being worked on for longer than TFA dos during its PRE PRODUCTION .

My guess would be ,since the rumor was reducing the two new female lead parts, they are uping poe's screen time. More than likely not a full scrap ,otherwise they would switch writers. even money say's they have been reading all the ideas, article and forums and decided what they had would up upset a market or not hit a market.

example - You cut the 2 major female roles to 1 minor role and that leaves a ton of screen time to fill.

This is good news. Not only will it help Episode VIII, it'll significantly help Rogue One.

I had read recently that they were doing rewrites to some of the script so this makes sense. I do think the first one seemed a little rushed towards the end of the movie. I dont mean that as a nitpick though I actually loved part seven, just seemed that towards the end they tried to start wrapping things up quickly. I am bummed that we have to wait longer for it but if in the end it gives us an even better movie Ill be all for it. In the meantime hopefully they will give us some great new canon to focus on.

Oh well. If this results in a better film then I am all for it. I do really like TFA but I think if it had spent a little longer in development, it could have ironed out some of the film's problems. I am still excited about what Rian Johnson can bring to the table.

The December 2017 release date means that Episode VIII will now be up against Avatar 2. I have a bad feeling about this !

Aww :( Well, I'm glad they're getting more time to work on this. Probably for the best.

Still, if Avatar 2 refuses to budge, we're gonna have a problem on our hands....at least economically speaking.

The filming allegedly was only to be delayed for like a few weeks. So that doesn't sound like a major rewrite, but more of some tweaking here and there.

I wouldn't worry about that. James Cameron keeps delaying all his hypothetical sequels, I seriously doubt Avatar 2 will come out in 2017. Even if it did, Avatar was a one-off 'event'. It's not going to make the same amount of money.

Besides it's ultimately the story of Star Wars which is appealing, not the box office returns.

    According to the second post:
I've heard from several sources the rewrites are positive, based on audience reaction to the new characters. People loved them.

I guess there will be less Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill then.
Don't ask me why, but I have the feeling that they get pushed to the side. (again)
I know ths ST is about the new generation, but why is it needed that they so short cameo's? (except Harrison Ford due to his stardom in TFA)
Don't get me wrong folks, I like Han Solo, but in my opinion his character is not important in a timeline after ROTJ.
I know they used him as a bridge between the OT and ST.
Now where the bridge is gone, I guess they want to get rid from the rest of the OT cast as soon as possible.

I agree with this part of the post:
"They're pushing it back for rewrites? That's a bad sign, isn't it?"
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 20, 2016, Original Post Date: Jan 20, 2016 ---
    Fingers crossed.
I fear the same that they do something rash.
    Correct statement.
