    Indeed!

I'm hoping maybe some more folks will participate because I'm curious if more testers would change things around again, or if we're more along the aggregate of the population at this point.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

It‘s really interesting to me that TROS is often one of the movies that is ranked rather low, even though it's the one movie which tried to pleased the fans the most.

    Statistically this makes sense.
ROTS is the unusual one in being the third film in the series and the largest carrying weight of a trilogy.

ROTJ, for example, is the lowest carrying weight of the OT, and even with the OT being a holy relic of no-touchy ROTJ drags behind the leader of the OT by 1.5 points, which is a big move.

With the ST, all of the values are an average of 3 points higher than the OT.
Proportionately, in fact, the ST and the OT are almost identical. The first two in each trilogy take up 30% (each) of the points of the carrying weight of the trilogy, while the third film in each takes up 40% (keeping in mind that more is worse, as lower scores are better - like golf).

So you can get there rather easily by just that 3 point move for the trilogy difference. I think TROS would have had to be one hell of a movie to overcome this pattern and score higher.

What's interesting to me, however, is how messed up the PT is.
Proportionately it's unlike the rest of the franchise.
Firstly, the third film in the trilogy comes in as the largest carrying weight winner, but even more surprising is that the trilogy average is approximately 4 points higher than the OT. That's a full point worse than the ST.
More fascinating than this even is that the proportion within the PT is more spread out across the trilogy.
I mean, there's variation, but it's not as big as the other two. The standard deviation & variance for the OT is 0.065/0.004, the ST is 0.051/0.002, and the PT is 0.048/0.002.

This is caused from ROTS just pummeling in a full 1.7 points ahead of the runner up of the trilogy. That is insane.
On one hand it says that ROTS is well liked of the PT, but on the other hand it also says that the rest of the PT isn't really well liked because the difference between the third and second places in the PT is 0.6 points. So basically the PT is a mirror image of the OT (yes, I'm aware of the irony of this and it amuses me) because the second and third are close while the first is vastly off. Meanwhile in the OT, the first two placements are neck and neck and the third is strongly distanced. The same case is pretty much true of the ST; the firs two are neck and neck and the third is strongly distanced.

    That surprised me.
What further surprised me was how far down the line the majority of the PT is in the franchise carrying weight.
While, yet again, TROS is in the top 5 and ahead of any ST title, two of the PT titles are in the bottom five of the franchise and even owns the lowest slot of the franchise.
Meanwhile, quite honestly, surprisingly to me is that the ST has a placement in the 5th and 6th positions, which is much more remarkable than I had expected - ESPECIALLY with TLJ.

In fact, TLJ is the most surprising part of everything I've seen.
Its carrying weight for the franchise is effectively equal to that of TFA, and both are a hair off from ROTS.
What I'm saying here is that ROTS, TFA, and TLJ are the biggest carriers of the franchise so far outside of the OT.

TLJ's inclusion in that list is surprising.

    ---

Also, I added your results in @Josh. Thanks for participating! :)

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I took it twice, a couple in the middle shifted slightly the second time around, but otherwise everything at top and bottom stayed the same... pretty accurate overall I'd say. Cool poll !

Updated to add your results to the pile.
Thanks for taking the poll. :)

And with that addition, TFA and ROTS are now tied for Franchise Carrying Weight, and The Last Jedi is now ahead of TFA in Franchise Carrying Weight!

I just realized that R1 is about on par with TPM.

    Fascinating.

Added a new section to the Ranks portion called Series Share of Rank.
Unless you filter by a rank, this will always show an equal share for all film series'.

However, if you click on a Placement (aka "rank") value (from Film Ranking Spread), then that rank (placement) will be isolated in the listing below, and the Series Share of Rank will show the percentage of votes a Series consumes of that ranking level.

Things stay pretty static at the low ranks, but once you get into the middle and end things get pretty interesting.
Give it a spin, it's neat.

This is a pretty interesting way of going about ranking. It helps to alleviate the biases which I believe we often use when we make these rankings (although it can't do that 100%). That said, the criteria is something that everyone doing this needs to decide for themselves. Do I go by "which do I think is the better film, qualitywise?" or "which of the two would I rather watch now?"

The ranking below is actually based on neither of these questions, but just gut. Which do I like better overall?

    Hey all,

I decided to take the quiz again, this time going for a more valued judgment.

The first list is my attempt at an objective ranking based on (my perceived) storytelling and moviemaking quality of each film. Aka my ‘brain’ judgment.
    result - quality.png
The Rise of Skywalker ranks surprisingly high here, although I do think the writing in TROS is a lot stronger than most people give it credit for! Conversely, Rogue One gets trashed for all it's weird flaws and inconsistencies...

The second list is much more subjective and wishy-washy, my attempt at ranking the movies based on emotional power and story ‘weight’. Aka my ‘heart’ judgment. This tends to align with my gut instinct, personal preference, in films... but boy did this turn up some weird results!
    result - emotional.png
Solo, which is one of my favorite SW films, comes in second-to-last in this ranking, which makes little sense to me. (Although, I guess it doesn’t pull my heartstrings as much as it satisfies my geek side with just more godsdarned quality Star Wars ;) ). Furthermore, Rogue One ranks very high in this list, a film that has soured on me considerably over the years; but that seems appropriate too, as, while it is shoddily made and cobbled together from random bits, Rogue One does sucker-punch you right in the heart quite a bit! (I’ve said it before, but Rogue One proves that a film doesn’t necessarily have to be good to be great :) ).

My The Force Be With You... Always.

Edit: I'll add my original not-thinking-about-it list as well, just for fun and reference :D
    result - thoughtless.png

Conclusion: I love me some Star Wars. I love almost all of the films, and I try hard to like the rest. Every time, I'd much rather see a non-favorite Star Wars than the greatest Transformers or whatever.

I added yours to the pile. :)
    Thanks for participating!

    ALL:
With folks taking the test multiple times, I've decided that I'm just going to take the first result that's posted.
There's a couple reasons for this.
    1) I don't want to re-edit scores ad nauseum.
    2) It removes bias if you just post, and we report, your first result.

@SKB , you will be grandfathered in since I adjusted yours before this decision was made, so your second posting is still being used.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

This is my definitive ranking I'll stay with these results:

I'm currently reading the ROS novelization and enjoying it. As far as the film, it gets good
once evil Rey appears. Reminds me of Luke on Dagaboh, in the dark side cave. I love all these films
even TPM which is last, Qui-Gon is one of my favorite Jedi. Films are subjective, to say the least.

    Star Wars Films - Result
    1. A New Hope
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Return of the Jedi
    4. Revenge of the Sith
    5. Rogue One
    6. Attack of the Clones
    7. The Force Awakens
    8. The Last Jedi

Had some free time tonight, so I gave another aesthetic facelift to the report.
Nothing big changed on the desktop mode other than I properly fit to standard screen size and abbreviated the film names, but for mobile and tablet users, you'll notice a marked shift in the presentation as I went through and custom tailored those views instead of leaving it to Tableau to auto-generate.

If you view it on those, let me know your experience. Some devices, inevitably, won't work out.
If you are reporting issues, please tell me the screen resolution that your phone/table uses if you know it. If you don't, then just tell me the make & model of the phone. i should be able to find the resolution information from that.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I will get this added today.

Cool update coming with it as well, everyone.
I added a value system so it's not a game of golf anymore, and the really cool bit is that I added an emotional dimension (upbeat/downbeat film) as well as made a bunch of the stuff respond to the Rank filter.

This all combined allows you to see the breakdown of which films are scoring in each rank out of which trilogy, as well as by what emotional flavor.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
