As the The Last Jedi is finally out, what are the awards that it can receive in all the upcoming award shows? In particular, the Academy Awards in March 2018?

As much as I loved the movie, when it comes to Academy Awards we can only expect nominations in the technical categories. My guesses:
    • Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing are the most likely.
    • Production Design, Cinematography and Editing are possibilities, although a bit more distant.
    • No clue about Costume or Makeup/Hairstyling.
    • Original Score is tricky because John Williams also did The Post which people say has a great score and he can only be nominated for one movie. As great as TLJ's score is, it's still based on the previous scores so I wouldn't be shocked if he were nominated for The Post instead.
    • Director, Screenplay, Actor for Hamil and Best Movie would be Earth shattering surprises. Technically possible given critic's responses, but would be the biggest surprises in the nominees list.
    • Actress, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor are impossible.

Agreed totally with you there, @BobPontes

My predictions are about the same as well. I think the next few weeks will make it clearer of how the movie will go in the award shows. :)

It won’t be nominated for any major awards. Maybe visual fx, sound editing that type of thing

Sadly, it's true. We might get a nod for Best Original Score, Production Design and Cinematography but we'll see! I am hoping for the best, we all are.

    Ha, that's what I like. ;)

I don't Hammil getting a best supporting actor nod is out of the question, even if it's a long shot

I only casually follow the Oscars, but is that really the case now? If I remember correctly, he was nominated for both Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind back in ‘77, as well as Images and The Poseidon Adventure back in ‘72, and there have been multiple instances where actors and actresses have since received two nominations in the same category.

Genuine question, because it seems I might have missed a rule change somewhere along the way if that is true, and a quick search around isn’t turning up any results?

I think that this film could certainly take a pass at many Oscar nominations, but I agree with others here: whilst it would be great to see Mark Hamill or Rian Johnson get some Oscar appreciation, I’m just not sure, because we’ve yet to really dig into Oscar season.

I think that it has a decent chance to be nominated for the following categories:
    • Best Cinematography
    • Best Costume Design
    • Best Film Editing
    • Best Original Score
    • Best Production Design
    • Best Sound Editing
    • Best Sound Mixing
    • Best Visual Effects

I can only see the movie win Oscars for best (Supporting)Actor/Actress and maybe sound editing/mixing. The score falls short in comparison with previous SW movies and anything related to best special effects will probably go to Bladerunner 2049, the most visually impressive movie I have ever seen. Even if Bladerunner doesn't win The Planet of the Apes movie would most likely beat TLJ. Best Film Editing is out of the question given the massive pacing issues TLJ has at times and while Rian is a good director he is not an excellent one so I can't see any Oscars there either. As for the Best Screenplay Oscar SW is the wrong kind of movie to win an Oscar in this category. So overall I would be very surprised to see TLJ win any Oscars except for Acting related ones. Feel free to bash this post if it turns out I'm terribly wrong with my predictions :)

I don't really know. I was basically echoing what I read from awards tracking websites. I'm assuming there was a rule change at some point, but I'm not certain.

It's interesting that I've started to read some calls from the press for the movie to be nominated for Best Movie. I still find it unlikely but let's see.

    EDIT: adding some links.

I imagine a movie like Blade Runner 2049 will take the visual effects academy award from TLJ, much like Ex Machina did from TFA.

    Deservingly so, though (I think).

I think War for the Planet of the Apes is the front runner for that category.

I’d give best supporting actor to Hamill in a heartbeat. I think the cinematography is stunning but perhaps SW isn’t high brow enough for the kind of award. VFX were fantastic as ever but have there been any groundbreaking movies on bay front in 2017?

I agree completely regarding giving Best Supporting Actor for Mark Hamill but Disney seems to be campaigning for him to get Best Actor and that is a long shot unless they are aggressive in their campaigning. Any possibility for Disney to loose up the consideration list to put Hamill in the Best Supporting Actor banner? That would be amazing.

    Cinematography, possibly.

Best Adapted Screenplay? Likely and not likely. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/01/05/movies/oscars-2018-critics-nominees.html

Best Picture? They aren't making any buzz for it sadly.

We will really see how it goes in the next few weeks. I am deeply hoping it goes the recognition it deserves, but even if it doesn't, I am sure they will keep on improving and improving and defy the odds for the next award shows. :)

you mean the end of this month...I'd say VFX, make up, sound, cinematography, production design, original score...but star wars, if anything, will ALWAYS win in sound if anything but hasnt won a best picture since ANH

in the VFX industry we have our own Oscar like awards called the VES awards. ILM usually sweeps them (unless its my company MPC ;-) ) so for sure TLJ will win for categories in

    Environments
    Comp
    FX
    Model

    so we will see
