Star Wars: The Last Jedi Made $417M In Profit

    The Last Jedi
continued Disney’s year end dominance, to the point where the studio is sucking all the oxygen out of the holiday corridor. Its $220M opening was the second biggest ever (trailing only the $247.9M opening of The Force Awakens). Johnson, who previously directed the edgy indies Looper and Brick, didn’t serve up a by-the-numbers retread here. He killed off a beloved original character and left more questions than answers about the connection between Daisy Ridley’s Jedi Rey and Adam Driver’s villainous Kylo Ren. Some felt the edge might have shortened Last Jedi‘s legs, but that’s like criticizing an Aaron Judge home run because it hit a light post and didn’t clear Yankee Stadium.

    Edit: Profit is actually $417M

It is something to keep in mind though. TFA made a profit of 780M, RO 319M, and TLJ 417M putting their total net profit from the films at 1.516B.

They paid about 4.1B in cash and stock to acquire LFL. I fully realize that the films aren't the only way they make money but I would assume it's safe to say they haven't made the money back on their investment yet.

The real impact will be seen on other productions. I really didn't like it ( and I'm not alone ) and I paid !

But I won't pay for the next ones.

Probably, but if you add to that, the products and ticket sales of their parks, i think that they would get their investment in 3 or 4 years, i can be wrong tho

The products are easy to measure, but I assume it would be difficult to measure ticket sales specifically because of Star Wars. At least until the new theme park opens. I think they'll have it easily once they start the streaming service. Probably a majority of those subscriptions will be people wanting to watch a Star Wars live action TV show.

I actually think it's entirely possible that they have made their money back. Remember, Lucas made his billions off toys not the movies...

    http://variety.com/2016/film/news/star-wars-licensed-merchandise-sales-1201799640/

the 4.2% is roughly 10.6 billion.

They don't specify exactly how much is Star Wars, but there's enough room to say they are DAMN close....

Yeah they definitely make a bunch from toy sales but profits are how you measure return on investment. I went and looked for numbers but I'm definitely no accountant so I'm not sure how to find the net profit of toy sales from 2015.

I believe your link is talking about overall licensed merchandise sales so it's not specific to Disney. However, I could be wrong on that.

Correct but Star Wars, specifically right after TFA, was THE thing to buy that year. It plays a HUGE part and like I said, it pushed them damn close.
I couldn't find one but I did see one at one point where it had better numbers for Star Wars merch sales.

    Believe me I won't.

I didn't even start BattleFront II since the movie went out ...

This saga has ended for me, all the characters I liked are dead and I'm not interested on what's left.

You quit. Okay, that's fine. Yet, you're going to commit your time telling us how unhappy you are with a saga you've quit watching.

This seems like a normal and very rational use of time.

I paid so I have the right to say what I want about topics about movies I paid for.

Did I write something about Solo or Ep IX since the movie came out ? No. I didn't.

BTW, you were posting in the hate thread while loving the movie so what's your point. Is it rationnal too ? That you can do things that I'm not allowed to because of Stockholm Syndrome ?

Did you see me in the thread for people who loved the movie ? Nah, I didn't post in it.

Difference being @DailyPlunge cares about the film, where as you say, you do not. Thus it's mysterious why you continue to post in this forum every day about a film you don't like, won't ever like and won't ever watch again (along with every other subsequent film)...

Unless...you don't really mean it...and you do still care about Star Wars...and likely...will still pay money to watch the next film(s)?

No one told you not to post. I'm just curious why you keep participating in discussions about a film you don't like when you don't have anything constructive to add. Seems like a waste of time.

Here, I found something that might give an idea on how much money they eventually keep in their pockets.

    https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/th...arnings-for-the-first-quarter-of-fiscal-2016/

The first table shows net income for the quarter ending January 2, 2016 (the quarter with Force Friday and TFA release.) At 2.88B for the whole company you can see how they aren't making the killing that some people think companies do. They have operating expense and cost of goods sold to factor into their revenues.

Under segment results you can see the revenue for consumer products for the quarter but you still have to take expenses out of that number in order to see what the profit is. After you take expenses out of the 1.91B in revenue you have to split it up into what falls under the star wars banner so the pie is getting sliced thinner each time.
