Probably, but why are you rolling your eyes? I mean, they're called The Knights of Ren for a reason.... It would be strange if a last name was Bob. What's more likely is that their names are likely not said in the movie. Just powerful henchmen for Kylo to kill.

I still don't know where the KOR came from? Old pupils of Snoke? We know that Snoke says in TFA that Kylo is the leader of the KOR. These characters are still too misterious for me (or maybe I missed something from the EU).

Could they be the other students that trained under Luke? Didn't he mention something about a handful of them leaving with Kylo in the flashback/voiceover-sequence in The Last Jedi?

Could be, but Adam Driver als had this to say:
"It was a group that existed before him [Kylo Ren], that he was a part of. Their place within everything is maybe more of a satellite group than I would say ... This is really tricky."

    But...

I hope there is a good enough explanation for him coming back. If he is indeed flesh and bone, Palpatine. Palpy maybe a powerful Sith, but he is still human, just like Vader.

In JJ I trust, although I must admit that part of me think it's true, and that it's not that well thought out and Palpatine is only back because TLJ didn't leave much for them to go off and to bring fans back in. We'll see.

I think it's silly to think they didn't have an arc planned out from the beginning. They had points they needed to hit and had "ideas" they need to hit in each episode. You don't plan a trilogy with, "let's see where the first one goes... then the second.... then we'll pull something together after to do the third." The franchise is worth billions.

Apparently that was the case when they planned to have a different director for each of the three movies in the trilogy. Each director would have their shot at taking the story in (more of less) the direction they wanted to.

I don't, for a second, believe there was a plan to bring Palpatine back in Ep.9 from the get go. I think it's a last gasp effort to reel in the fans who were disillusioned by Ep. 8. I mean, why even bother with Snoke in this trilogy at all? Had this really been thought out from the beginning, Palpatine probably would've been in TFA. After the massive financial success of TFA, Disney never thought that there would be much or any backlash with Ep. 8. Now they are scrambling to set things 'right'.

Chris Terrio, co-writer of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: "We thought about that line ['Let the past die, kill it if you have to'] a lot. Rian [Johnson] did something that any good second act will do, which is create the antithesis. In The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker is a myth Rey's obsessed with and there's a warm embrace of the past. What Rian suggested is the past is a mixed bag and you can't rely upon it to tell you where to go in the future. What we're doing with Episode IX is trying to create a synthesis between those two points of view." (Empire magazine November 2019)

Apparently this Sith army is big enough for their own ships, to? I don't understand how they're connected to Kylo in anyway. The 3PO image is interesting. but I bet that he is just there to hold their weapons and nothing more. I don't think he goes Rambo at all, though I won't lie and say that won't be cool.

That reminds me of something I thought years ago it could be total coincidence, but what with all this talk of Kylo’s re-made mask and all the bad guys in that poster wearing masks... have you all ever thought about Maz’s name and what it sounds like?

Maz Kanata = Mask an art, huh?

I don’t even know if I know what I think that means, but if TRoS has a theme about masks and hidden things being revealed and that kind of thing, it makes me wonder if maybe Maz is hiding some crazy special Force skills or something... Just a thought anyway.

But what if Palpatine’s return wasn’t planned? Does it really matter if it wasn’t? I don’t know, one thing is to be curious about the writing process in this trilogy, another very different is to become cynical and disappointed when you’re given access to the creation of illusions by the writers...

I think we all should have more faith in the writers, in the story in front of us, in the magic of cinema and music and stop trying to find weaknesses in the whole production... Things never run perfectly, challenges of all kinds may be experienced when writing or on set, but who cares? Also styles differ from author to author but that is not a bad thing and in fact, using different voices for each ST film was definitely an intentional move on the part of Lucasfilm.

Also, People who have experience writing know perfectly well that the first plan you follow will not be the same at then end of the process and that what’s important is to find the heart of the story as you begin writing and begin seeing your own characters in action. Also making sure the story an abstract coherent, in this case: thesis, antithesis and synthesis, as Terrio said. Palpatine might not have been planned, but bringing him back in some shape of form is coherent with the idea of wrapping up the saga, and that’s all I care about.
