    HOT NEWS FROM SCYLLAR.COM

Of course you know there's a Chapter VII in the perennially beloved Star Wars franchise, which George Lucas recently, to much open-jawed shock, sold to Disney. That entertainment giant has run with it, announcing not only a long-awaited sequel to Return of the Jedi, but also more installments to come. Not only that, but tangential storylines are also in the works.
The next installment in the franchise, The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams (who successfully revived Star Trek) is out next month, with reports of pre-order ticket sales crashing servers due to ridiculously high demand. I'm a massive Star Wars fan ... but I hate crowds. What to do, what to do ...

What to do is, of course, to quit worrying about that (because it's not your problem) and to get on with the exploration of Star Wars' ever expanding universe.
Chapter VIII, currently being filmed, will follow relatively close upon the heels of The Force Awakens, according to TheChive.com, with a release date set for May 2017. The picture has yet to be titled (or it has a name but studio execs are playing it close to the vest), and is set to be helmed by Rian Johnson, director of the surprise sci-fi hit Looper.

Forward thinkers that Disney's film developers clearly are, there is already a Chapter IX on the table. As with part VIII, we have no title announced as yet, but we do know who will be behind the camera handling direction duties. That person would be Colin Trevorrow, whom you are probably familiar with from his directorial duties on the recent smash hit Jurassic World (which maybe should have been subtitled "We're Really, Really Sorry About the Last Two Films"). Naturally, there are no plot details on tap yet. You know, close to the vest and all.

    But wait! There's more!
Not content with just its extended reach into the future of the Star Wars storyline, Disney is also taking an intriguing look back.

For instance, the announced Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is a prequel to Chapter IV: A New Hope (or, simply, Star Wars, as it is affectionately known). It's got an impressive cast, including Mads Mikkelsen, the guy who outdid Anthony Hopkins in his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter on the exquisitely brilliant Hannibal television series. Forest Whitaker, another brilliant actor is also on board, as are Ben Mendelsohn and Felicity Jones. The plot revolves around the Rebels' mission to obtain the plans for the Death Star - you know, that vital data C-3P0 and R2-D2 smuggled away in that escape pod dismissed by an Imperial officer who probably got fired. Or killed. A little more diligence by that guy and the entire IV-VI trilogy would never even have happened.

Finally - and this one really excites me - comedy filmmakers (!) Chris Miller and Phil Lord of The Lego Movie fame are apparently locked in to direct a friggin' Han Solo prequel. I'm just as stoked about this as I am the soon-to-screen The Force Awakens. The only downside is I'll have to wait for May 2018 to get to see it. Still and all, worth the wait in my most humble of opinions.

We're in mondo fanboy territory here - I don't consider myself a fanboy but even my list of all-time favorite movies includes all six of the Star Wars films - and, as such, there is tons of room for compromise. Even Star Wars fans have been highly critical of the fun but admittedly flawed Phantom Menace, which, even though the weakest in the franchise, is still made of awesome sauce!

But that's just my opinion. How does this hardcore universe expansion strike you? Does it sit well with you guys, or does it make you see red as red as Vader's saber? Please share your thoughts. Comments below!

Disney paid a lot of money for their acquisition of Lucasfilm and the franchise and copyrights for Star Wars related media, so it is understandable and to be expected that they need to see returns of their investment.

I'm more concerned about the pace and feel compelled to apply some quotes to illustrate my concerns:

"The candle that burns twice as bright only burns half as long" (Joe Turkel to Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner) and - of course - Yoda:

LUKE Vader. Is the dark side stronger? YODA No... no... no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

From where I sit it almost looks to me as if we are currently receiving an overdose of Star Wars related media. With so much to choose from, the individual accomplishments (e.g. Rebels) could get overlooked on one hand, while the lackluster efforts (at least that's what I got from reading the reviews about some of the TFA prequel tie-in novels) in other departments are unduly highlighted.

And according to my experience the inferior products usually don't help the recognition of the better ones. Being an old fossile from the first generation we did not have that much to choose from in the old days, so I'm tempted to say "the more the merrier" (I cancelled my Star Wars Battlefront purchase plans and instead now look forward to the Visceral Games approach).

But how that all affects the magic of Star Wars is the big question to me, but we'll probably have to wait for another decade before we can answer this.
