I got the TFA core set, and it was... interesting. Granted, my wife and I only played a few games, and I'm sure that with more ships the gameplay would be more interesting, but for the most part we were just flying circles around each other ad infiintum.

Enjoy! My gripes with my limited experience of the gameplay aside, I think that the movement mechanics of the game are actually really incredible!

Ah I see well it a bit of a test for me. If I like it I will invest more time and money into it with the various expansion packs etc. Is it true that the First order and the Empire can combine forces and same withe Rebels and the Resistance?

    Yep!

There are technically only three factions- Rebels (which include the Resistance), the Empire (which include the First Order), and Scum.

Again, I've only played with the small TFA set a few times. I have a lot more experience with other FFG games.

Note that this is an extremely broad painting of the game, but you can vaguely look at it this way:

The Rebellion is about quality over quantity.

The Empire is about quantity over quality.

Scum is about subverting the rules of the game itself.

But yeah, that's just the kind of generalization I've heard fans more involved than me use. Since the game is like 13 or 14 waves in now, you've got a ton of flexibility with whatever faction you choose, so I don't think they're necessarily as bound by that rule of thumb as they once might have been.

Personally, I like both the Rebellion and Empire pretty equally, though I'd probably choose Empire simply because I love to field a lot of units. Scum seems like it could be fun to play, but the fighters are a lot less iconic, and theme is a big factor for me.
