Seeing the new superweapon in The Force Awakens official poster

Even Imperials in books like Aftermath and the Lost Stars agreed that slow, practically immobile gigantic space station was an epic faliure, so this new reveal really surprised me.

It sure is classic element in this genre (Fiction Fantasy, Space Opera) but many of us (including me) were initialy disappointed by this lack of originality, but on the other hand, what would be original (yet classic) exactly?

As an alternative, I could picture a more mobile weapon, like Super Star Destroyer Eclipse for example:
    That thing was serious!

    Any other alternatives?

If the deathstar is integrated in a living planet with possibly innocent people living on it. It's much more difficult to blow up, isn't it? Ironically Leia would be in a position where she would have to at least consider blowing up a planet.
I like it because it's a moral dilema. A grey area.

I totally understand where people are coming from with the lack of originality, but personally I think that it's actually a nice evolution of the death star concept (and 'rhymes' nicely for the first film of the OT and ST)

The first order - being some imperial remnant/hideouts would be at a disadvantage taking over the galaxy in terms of force and territory held. Seems likely they'd try to create a crazy super weapon to even the odds...If this thing blows up entire solar systems it should be seriously menacing and formidable. It's the logical next order of magnitude : death star= moon sized station=destroys a planet--- Starkiller=planet sized=destroys star systems.

How easy would it be to destroy a whole planet? (As opposed to a station which seemed to always have an exploitable weakness).
Maybe this is where the 'moral grey area' comes in--- in that the Resistance has to destroy a planet the way the DS did in ANH??

I do like the idea of a Star Destroyer super weapon, but imo that seems less foreboding than an entire planet that's a weapon.

A little off topic but is that the cannon itself or a propulsion system in the poster? Clearly the planet would need to at least be able to rotate to align with a target, but can the planet move? If so I'd imagine we could expect some crazy weather/geologic characteristics on the surface

Well that's exactly why I don't believe that the Starkiller superweapon is built IN the planet. It has to have some additional parts, outer space extension or even a device of it's own.

It doesn't bother me to have a new Superweapon like the death star in this new trilogy, but I would have like it to be in the second or third movie, not in the first, now I just hope they won't use it again in the same trilogy, I think that having 3 movies out of 7 with superweapons is enough to move on something different ;)
(still if they'll use another one and it fits in the world they built and it works for the movie I won't be angry at all :D )

It would only kind of make sense if it was space station over the planet like this one in kotor 2, but what we are seeing is it built into the planet which is really, really dumb.

I'm a big Sci-Fi literature fan. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the Starkiller was Arthur C. Clarke. Sure, the concept is very close to the Death Star, but everything depends on how well they explain/introduce it to us. They are going to have to justify it. And I'mm sure they will–cleverly

I made this after seeing the poster this morning, just trying to get a better idea as to what it is we're looking at. I too feel that there is a repetitive theme here with the spherical WMDs, but we also have to look at this as Ep VII and not IX, this could just be another "bad idea" - so to speak.

My guess is that the red "eye" is not a propulsion system, there's no way this thing moves if there are people walking on the surface. Also, I don't think they would feature the engine instead of the main cannon on the official poster. My guess is that it sits in orbit in some outer system and that this is definitely the weapon side, but I almost feel as though it's a giant tractor beam device (possibly to capture large ships) rather than another giant laser.

What exactly tells us this is the Starkiller, ok you added the planet like surface but I can't see it here.

This thing looks more like a ship then a planet, no vegetation or mountains and water sites. they could have played with the expectations and we see the first glimpse of the Sledgehammer.

this image made me think if it's possible that they use the energy of the planet's core to use the superweapon

I really don't think there will be much sentient life on that planet at all.

    Could not agree more.
The lack of originality is obvious and undeniable. What the heck were they thinking?

And the notion that this is bigger and badder than the Death Star because...(dramatic pause)...it can take out a whole star system rather than a single planet!! (gasp)

Stupid and pointless. Usually only one or a couple planets in a given system are inhabited anyway, right?? Why would you give a crap about destroying lifeless hunks of rock orbiting Alderaan's sun when you can just destroy Alderaan itself (like the original Death Star did)?

I've said this since JJ took over writing. Don't expect anything original or ground breaking in terms of story from him. Keep your eyes on Rian Johnson, if you want original you go with him.

EDIT: Just to clarify. I'm not saying JJ is not capable to deliver something original. But his past work isn't. So adjust your expectations is what I would recommend.

Keep in mind guys... we still don't know if this thing is even a weapon.

I seriously see it as more of a "capturing / tractor beam" device rather than a big laser.

Well, now that it is there, I hope it will survive a film or two. So that the audience can feel that massive threat as the story progress.

Do not blow it up immediately in the same film!
