As the information comes pouring in more frequent now, I would like to start a thread for all of you vehicle enthusiasts out there to discuss what is to come (or has been) - in a central place. Lots of information could already be found scattered here and there throughout a number of different sources, but with the current Lego leaks, let’s have some common ground.

So @Rieekan, @Lazarus Dei, @Lock_S_Foils, @Grand Master Galen Marek and all you others out there, c’mon in!

Although with all the news out there on Gorilla Walkers, Kylo’s TIE fighter, new A-Wings, Crait skimmers etc. I would like to start with the new resistance bombers.

Looking up the images from the Lego boxes, my theory is that they represent a next evolutionary step of the B-Wing.

While the Crait Skimmers take the role of the down-stripped B-Wing cockpit with stub foils and a down-sized engine section…
    Skimmer.jpg

… the resistance ‘bomber’ looks like the B-Wings big Brother going full gunship/corvette.
    ResBomb_01.jpg
By the way, the protruding element below the cockpit at the main fin looks suspiciously like a Gatling style gun or missile launcher.

It technically keeps the shape of a B-Wing with the cockpit locked in top-ward position, while the side foils where moved from below the engine section up to the main body.

And it includes rotating gun emplacements on the back of the main pod.
    LegoBB.jpg

The first prototype of the ‘Blade Wing’ introduced in Rebels/season II already showed us a manned gun-pod mounted on the lower end which Sabine used to blast away on the imperial blockade.
    BladeWing.jpg

And again, such gun turrets can be found also on the lower end of the resistance space craft, although much smaller and pointed mainly backwards.
    ResBomb_02.jpg

All in all, this bomber/gunship reminds me of the flying fortress’ of WWII. It’s not the first time that the designers like Doug Chiang and others take inspiration from that era and transform it star wars style.

If the LEGO set is what was being termed a "Gorilla walker," I've gotta say, it doesn't look very gorilla-like to me. And that's actually a relief.

I really like the new Resistance bombers. They re definitely influence by B-wings but only after closer inspection the similarities become visible. This is, in my opinion, the way newer versions of popular ships, like Y-wings or TIE fighters, should be made - they should be inspired by only to such an extent that a ship feels new. Another good example of an update, at least in my opinion, are FO Star Destroyers - you can see an inspiration but they feel like new designs.

Totally agreed! The back portions is just to lower the balance point, at the front extremities have the hand-like look borrowed from great apes when walking on their knuckles. To me, it looks more like a pitbull except for the ‘hands’.

And I’m even more glad that they didn’t re-use the tick design from the Starkiller base walkers.
    AT-PO.jpg

Although the source is quite hard to read, I tried to make a translation from German to English on this.
    text.jpg

"AT-PO: The All Terrain Defense Pod of the First Order was produced only in small numbers and deployed at Starkiller Base to protect important installations. At the head of the four legged vehicle, power generators were located to supply energy for the two heavy lase cannons of the AT-PO."

I think the scene with the resistance bombers will play out very much like the bomber crew scenes from old war movies, just as the trench run scene in ANH was based on a scene from 'Dambusters', and the dive-bombing scene in TFA was based on a scene from 'The Battle of Midway'

Great thread @Star Dude & Iam love be the detail we can make out from the LEGO Resistance Bomber in particular it looks like the lower gun turret can drop down & rotates all the way around for both forward & backwards firing. I would also guess that those gun turrets are larger then the Blade Wing from Rebels the just look smaller due to the wise of the ship which seams to be somewhere between the Ghost & a Corvette in size though it hard to judge on that brief shot from the trailer.

& yes Iam sure they will reference back to old WW2 films for the dog fight scenes though I always got more of a 633 Squadron feel for the trench run scene then the Dambusters but that just a personal preference.

I wonder if these "Tick Walkers" will be used in Ep. VIII in some other capacity than the new ones.

@Star Dude Thanks for including me in this great thread! I love the new designs for TLJ....but in the back of my mind I am wondering if it makes sense to have such a large fleet of Resistance Bombers, taking into account the nature of starship design, fielding and sustainment that has to be done "behind the scenes" by manufacturers such as Incom or Koensayr. Does the Resistance get support from the Republic? Just got done reading the R1 novel and they have a nice section from Mon Mothma's journal about the rise of the Rebel fleet and how they had to develop a huge "black market" supply chain to get spare parts.....

Iam wondering even though they are called Resistance Bombers in the lego sets they were in fact part of the Republic Fleet that survives & have now been incorporated into the resistance oh well only about 7 months till we find out.

Thanks for the (thr)heads up @Star Dude

Like @Addi Ras has said, I'd be interested to see where these ships have come from... I can see where the B-Wing evolution concept comes from and there are obviously visual cues which link to Leia's Takodana landing craft from TFA too, but they feel more like gunships or escorts than bombers. With the rear box art for the Lego kit showing an interior as well as a cockpit and two gun-pods they're clearly way bigger than the fighter/bombers we've seen anywhere else in the saga.

I'm looking forward to that alleged, 'sleek' x-wing mentioned in some tweet a couple months ago. I was not happy with the ships and vehicles in TFA. I prefer the sleek, curvy designs to the angular, boxy stuff.

I thought they were too similar to the regular ones to leave much of an impression.

I know what you're getting at...

In ANH we got all the iconic designs we've come to love, X-Wings, Y-Wings, TIE fighters, Vader's TIE, Star Destroyers, Corellian Corvette and the motherflippin' daddy-o that is the Millennium Falcon. By the time TESB rolled around we got Snowspeeders, AT-ATs, TIE Bomber, Slave-1 and the Rebel capital ships. ROTJ then brought the the Lambda Shuttle, Jabba's Sail Barge, the Skiffs, Speeder Bikes, AT-STs, A-Wings and B-Wings.

The PT had some misses, but still hit with the Naboo Starfighter, Padme's two ships, the Jedi Interceptor and Starfighter, Republic Gunship etc...

TFA did an ok job, but there was nothing to really compete with the OT or many of the PT ships - the X-Wing was fine as a lite-evolution, the TIEs were pretty much a just a paint job from their predecessors, Kylo's Destroyer was just a wedge and his shuttle pretty much a brick with two almost vertical fins and we didn't even really see the FO walkers and snowspeeder. The less said about Leia's 'meh' Resistance landing craft the better. Pretty much the only stand out design was Rey's speeder and that looks like Luke's turned through 90-degrees with the 3 engine pods sawn off?!?

There was report back in February (?) where someone in the media tweeted that they saw a brief preview (maybe 2 minutes?) of TLJ where a 'newer' or different (or updated) model of an X-wing hovering inside a larger ship. It was surmised that Poe was the pilot of that ship. SWNN had an article on this.

This could be the X-wing version the New Republic is using - T-85 - while Resistance is using the older model T-70. T-85's were mentioned in Before the Awakening, in Poe's story, but they were never seen on screen.

I'm really intrigued by those new Heavy Assault Walkers, or the gorilla walkers. I can see where they get the gorilla part of it from. To me, it's a tad too similar to the AT-AT's, but it makes sense. As the First Order originated from the Empire, they probably started with the same tech and updated it overtime, as well as new tech that fit in with the aesthetics of the Empire's vehicles, such as Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle likely taking inspiration from the cargo shuttles from RO. The Heavy Assault Walker looks like they modified the front legs, which I'm assuming will help prevent getting tripped like the AT-AT's did on Hoth. I hope to see some sort of new starfighter akin to the Jedi Interceptor!

Gotcha, I had completely forgot about this! Thanks for the reminder. I had to do some digging and find the article.
