I work as a graphic designer, art and design educator and university lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna ... so naturally I'm very much interested in the design aspects of Star Wars. So let's talk about one particular design/redesign in The Last Jedi: The Stormtroopers.

Honestly, I was not a huge fan of the new stormtroopers in TFA – once someone pointed out that they look like Donald Duck, I was no longer able to un-see that. Now they were slightly redesigned for TLJ (a small step back to the "classic" helmets) and I like them much better now – the differences are easily overlooked, but it's all about detail. The redesign adds symbolic value by making them look more sharp and aggressive.

I very much hope JJ sticks to the updated design. What's your opinion?

IMO the TLJ version of the stormtroopers looks better. They seem more menacing and dashing. Too bad TLJ didn't use the troopers at all.

What about the rest of the armor? Are both the same in both movies?
I didnt even noticed they were different...hahaa

Ps. I voted for TFA because of the inovation. But both helmets are almost the same.

I didn't notice any differences in the armor – I guess they are the same design as in TFA.

Same design. But the main reasons why we don't see the old helmets are:

    1. Their composite plastics were repurposed for Rogue One props. There is nearly not a single complete TFA helmet prop left. They had to make new ones.
    2. Rian Johnson didn't think the TFA helmets were menacing enough. So they added the new mouth piece to make the helmet look more angry.

    * I noticed that all the FO stormtroopers in Star Wars Battlefront have the TLJ helmet variant.

As for which of the two I like most. I can't really say. I love both the designs and love the old one because the black is more prominent in the design. I like the second one because it is more evocative of the traditional Star Wars Clone and Stormtrooper helmet features.

I always imagine that the some FO divisions have slightly different helmet designs, just like for instance, real armies have, and especially the US armed forces. So I imagine that the Finalizer's stormtrooper division (8000 troops) still uses the FO stormtrooper (TFA) helmet type A whereas the divisions on the Supremacy already deploy the FO stormtrooper (TLJ) helmet type B.

We can even go so far as to imagine what the upgrades to the B (TLJ) version might be. Because there is a change in the mouth piece and the filter we can safely assume that whereas the TFA version didn't filter out toxic gasses, the TLJ version does. Hence the upgrade.

If J.J. is a total bad ass, he would show stormtroopers with both helmet designs in the next movie.

    HIRE ME HIDALGO! HIRE ME!

Yes, I imagined the very same – since there is no time jump between TFA and TLJ both types must have been in existence at the same time.

There's also a certain logic to it. Of course, the Supreme Leader would keep his most modern and up to date troops close to his own person. That's probably why the troops on the Supremacy look more modernized than those deployed on the Finalizer. Note that Starkiller base, Hux's command centre, also deploys troops with the old TFA helmets. It could also just be a difference between forces stationed on Starkiller (from which Hux derives his stormtroopers on the finalizer, Finn has been on sanitation on Starkiller) and those in the Supremacy fleet.

    Serious head canon here now.

Oh this is a great subject. Now i noticed a slight diffrence in Phasma's armor.

Her TLJ armor looked more femamin then her TFA look. It seems like it got more of a "curve" in her waist line & hips?

Am i wrong? Did anyone else notice? Or am i just a sexist pervert?:p(joking!)

    Great post!

I voted for the TLJ design, but I still think the very best stormie helmet design ever was the OT design.(stormy 3)

The clone troopers looked pinched. (stormy 2)The TFA troopers(stormtrooper) were better but still not as badass as the OT troopers.

The LTJ design is a strong step in the right direction. But the OT troopers are still my favorite.

I pay close attention to design and visual details, but, honestly, I don't think I would ever notice the difference in these helmets if it wasn't pointed out to me. It's a very small change, but I appreciate they revised even such detail and didn't go "ah, whatever, nobody will notice anyway."

I think TLJ is better. Sharper, more ominous looking.

I think it depends on the time jump if there is one, but I guess we can count on it.
If Episode IX starts years after TLJ, we'll propably get a redesigned redesign.
And as long as there's money to be won at Canto Bight Casino, there will be armor upgrades for the First Order.

Well just by looking at toys her TLJ armor does have more of an hourglass shape then TFA.

In the art of The Last Jedi, Rian openly says he couldn't take seriously the force awakens Stormtrooper. Perhaps is rude to say it like that by his side, but I had the same feeling. I think the little details make a great difference. It looks more menacing to me.

Although TLJ plays more openly with sexuality than TFA (Ben Swolo, veeery deep V-necks worn by characters of both sexes, the look of Admiral Holdo) I do not think that this is a case of female objectification. In TFA Phasma walked around and didn't do too much action-wise. In TLJ, she got herself a fight scene and that by default requires a lot more free body movement than a straight walk. Her torso had to turn freely, so they widened the "metal bra" (I don't know how to describe it otherwise) at its end and made it more loosely attached. In TFA's armour the ends of the "metal bra" stick closer to her torso because there was no need to make it wide. Otherwise, I didn't see any differences.

For reference, here are photos of Phasma in TFA:
    And in TLJ:

Pawek 13 u nailed it! Making the "upper piece" or metal bra as u interstingly called it larger 4 more movement natrualy created a more female hourglass look! Well dun friend!

I was hoping we'd get different (new) armored troopers (apart from the standard FO stormtroopers) in TLJ just as in previous SW movies. The only thing different this time around were the executioner stormroopers, which as far as I can tell, were stylistically the same as the standard ST stormtrooper apart from some extra black on their armor.

Seeing them together, I prefer the TLJ design. But in TFA, the camera was really in love with those costumes, and they looked gorgeous. I feel like Stormtroopers really weren't that present in TLJ.
