Surprising ROTJ didn't have Emporor's Palace in 3rd act..

No, I totally get that. It's just, maybe it would've been cool to not have the Death Star at the Rebel Base (like in ANH) or some secret construction facility (like ROTJ) but instead have it at a core world, threatening to use it against the Empire's own people to force subjugation and quell the increasingly rebel sympathetic galaxy. Would've been a good way to really show how the Empire was falling apart politically too, rather than just showing a major military loss.

But, again, ROTJ is one of my favorite films. I certainly don't hate what they did- it's just interesting to think about alternatives.

Yeah, I definitely understand your point. Alderaan had already sort of served that purpose though. Killing everyone on a planet because the leadership there were ‘probably’ Rebel sympathizers? That had to polarize folks on both ends of the spectrum. We just didn’t get to see much of it. The books have touched on it some.

To be totally honest, I’ve never been in love with them recycling that plot device from ANH to start with. But it’s not like I have a way better idea, so best to end the way it began I guess :)

True. I always wondered how the Galaxy felt about Alderaan's destruction. Was is a significant blow against the Empire's reputation, or was it pretty much just embraced by tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorists?

I think Claudia Gray did a terrific job at addressing it with Lost Stars. The Imperial propaganda machine successfully sold it to the core worlds as a victory over the terrorists, but it was also viewed dubiously by a good portion of other systems. Most importantly from within the Empire itself. Gray’s version paints the average Imperial as someone who believed in the benevolent mission of the Empire: bring order to a chaotic galaxy - with no sinister underpinnings. When they see the cost of that order is the possible destruction of whole worlds, things changed. They either become ever more fascist and fanatical in order to justify the action, or grow disenchanted and begin defecting to the Alliance.

Tarkin’s gambit is correct with some respect: it stifles open resistance. But, ultimately, solidifies systems that were undecided on which side to take in the conflict. The act sends everyone to their opposing extremes. It’s a shame this concept hasn’t been touched on much, but everything’s fair game nowadays.

Sounds like an interesting read, I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, it would've been cool to see how this would've played out more. Even with Starkiller Base, this idea could have been more touched upon, but TFA barely even acknowledged the base's terrible attack (probably my biggest gripe with a film that I otherwise really did enjoy)

It’s definitely worth the time. It is technically ‘Young Adult’ though, so there’s plenty of stuff that’s directed at that demographic you have to wade through.
Yeah, that is one of its major failings in general. No real establishment of stakes or players. Who are the First Order? Who are the Republic? Who are the Resistance? Who was just blown up? Why do we care? There’s always Ep.8, I guess.

Besides the Ralph McQuarrie Art Deco-styled take on the Emperor's palace, ROTJ production designer Norman Reynolds also drew concept art for it. Reynolds' take on the palce was much more in the style of a Gothic cathedral -- complete with echoes of Maleficent's throne room in the 1959 Sleeping Beauty.
