Yeah, the filmmakers are definitely not being inspired by the Japanese meaning of Ren. The English meaning of Ren = Raven makes MUCH more sense. I really, really do not believe the Japanese and Egyptian concepts of Ren are being used as inspiration in the context of SW:TFA.

Yeah I was joking. I'm pretty sure too Kylo Ren isn't inspired by a Lotus Flower.

I find a lot of connections to many things from what we've seen so far of TFA. Star Wars has always been that way in general. It's a big mythology mashup designed and retold in Star Wars style.

EXACTLY. The myths themselves were a mashup, too. So TFA may be even more mashed up. But I still think it's gonna be pretty original.

@Lazlo, the film's not out yet, sure, but more evidence has emerged supporting my link to mythology theory. Of course, I never said we could uncover story arcs this way, but I'm wondering...is your confidence in me is still low? :)

Could Kylo Ren be totally in love with Rey like Daphne and Appolo ? There's this scene in the woods which might match with this myth.

Actually, that wouldn't. Especially if you spell the name of the god Apollo wrong.

FWIW, a couple people discussed and then vehemently dismissed the East Asian 'ren' thing; which may have been premature since the person who brought it up used the "wrong" character/homonym. There are far more plausible candidates, and I'm sure a native Chinese speaker of either dialect will know even more.

    Ren: "to join/to connect" - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/連

    Ren: "to train/discipline" - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/練

    Ren: "bond/kinship/fateful connection" - https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/緣

That last one isn't pronounced ren/lian in Japanese/Chinese. But because of the similar meaning ('connection/join/bond') with the first listing, people - especially in Japan/Korea - apparently mix the two up quite often.

I love those translations. Those could apply. We'll see which ones do by the end of TFA, I'd imagine. Those are interpretations are a lot more applicable than the clunky hidden meaning with the Lotus/Padme garbage suggesting cloning or progeny of Anakin. No offense to that YouTuber (Patrick). He's articulate and earnest but misguided. I just flat out don't agree with that speculative workup.

By the way, here are some background links I discussed earlier in the thread regarding how the Cyclopes created the three most powerful weapons to defeat the Titans:
