Well, since SWG is gone completely, I'd say there's not much of a choice here. But if we look back on both games objectively, SWG was a pretty fun game to play up until a certain expansion. I'd wager the Old Republic is still fun to play and I occasionally drop by on the Harbinger server when I'm free enough.

I'm still waiting for projectswg to get their post-CU emulator up-and-running. SWG was special in that it really just let you explore and interact in the universe without depending on the notion that each player character is the "savior of the galaxy" or something. That's what bothers me most about SWTOR: they try to make every player feel powerful and important, then the charade unceremoniously falls apart when you engage in any multi-player interaction. For that reason, I approach SWTOR as a single-player game to maintain that illusion. SWG, meanwhile, left an enormous range of possibilities open to each player without breaking the immersion of the game world. I have yet to find another game that makes being a shopkeeper just as interesting and viable as being a Jedi.

That's a huge problem with WoW-like MMOs in general, though. It's as though writers forget that they're not writing singleplayer campaigns. Even games like the browser giant Runescape got this wrong (I'm the only one that can use Silverlight to seal that demon, huh? Not even that guy standing behind me, waiting to get the same quest from you?).

This pretty much sums up my thoughts as well. I really liked SWG when it first came out. It was very much a sandbox and they left you to make up your own stories. Jedi were very rare and few if any really knew how to unlock the class to even play as one. But then it was pretty much competing directly with WoW in the height of it popularity, so it tried to compensate and change what it was or originally started out to be, and it went down hill from there. It tried to please everyone and get in the WoW players but then it ultimately didn't please anyone. I kind of wish they would take another crack at the concept but how do you sell investors of a game on the premise of "You are not the hero, you may never be a Jedi, you will not save the Galaxy from some great threat, and no one may ever know you exist. In fact your life might be pretty boring. But you can be a moister farmer, or a twi'lek dancer working for tips, or a scout surviving in the wilderness, or even a diplomat. Please get excited!"

SWG was very dependent of the players, that was them who made the events and if you were with a good group of guys, it was very good.

SWTOR is very well written and it was a real pleasure to make the stories of all the class. Playing a huttball with a guardian was just the most fun thing I did in a video game.

SWG was build for the fans, the game community was more to the mature gamers and was the most fun ive had in a game ever... SWTOR was a EA money grab, pay to win and lacked the rewards... my vote goes to SWG.. didnt even have to think about it

SWG will always have a special place in my heart. But I'm enjoying SWTOR well enough too, so my vote goes to both.
They can be awesome, enjoyable games, even if SWTOR had a bit of a rough start. xD

What i enjoyed about SWG was the rare items could kinda be farmed by anyone.. you didnt have to do raids for all items and once they took the No Trades off things it really got exciting.. I loved many nights by myself farming Sith holocrons and Krayt Dragon pearls.. but i really miss being a real bounty hunter :)

To me SWG was the game of all games! I loved that game and am still sad that it is no more. I miss it greatly and much as I try TOR just doesn't have the same feel to it... it lacks that feeling of freedom that you get from circumnavigating Tatooine on your speeder bike, or riding endlessly into the desert to hunt banthas. You can't go Rancor hunting on Dathomire, have your own house with free decorating options, or your very own shop front vendor.

Galaxies had something (for me) that no other game has had since... a sincere feeling of freedom and inclusion into the star wars saga. TOR comes close with the class stories on inclusion into the star wars universe.... but even that... it is the same for everyone more or less and you can't do anything about that. The story was the same in galaxies for everyone but I didn't follow the story as much there... it wasn't the MAIN function of the game. Galaxies just seemed like it offered more to experience.

Yes very well said.. i dont think i'd ever enjoy a game as much as SWG.. and the people in the game helped make it.. i made friends in that game all over the world and we trusted each other, to the point of us sharing accounts and trusting each other that we would never take from the other person.. People really helped each other too.. Tor is a typical raiders/PVP game.. rewards didn't feel rewarding and most things felt reskinned..

Yes, the community was great too, for sure!

Have to second that about TOR also... it's too much a typical raiders/PVP game and the rewards do feel rather empty.

I long for the pre-NGE SWG days. I hate the instancing that has become the norm in mmorpgs. The gathering and crafting system was also far more fun than any other to date. And the PvP was much more immersive and enjoyable. I will also second the idea that not having to be the all important hero-savior in the game was much more desireable.

If they get an emulator up and running I would sign up immediately.

SWTOR was fun but didn't have the flexibility and depth to keep me interested past the main storyline. Once I leveled up and completed the storyline for a couple of the different classes I would pretty much quit till they added new stuff. And I dread the move to the hybrid free to play-subscription pay scheme. To me once they made that switch I noticed a big unwelcome change.
