Meet Bazine Netal - a lethal mercenary, highly-trained in combat and espionage, a master of disguise, and the unlikely protagonist of the latest entry in the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens publishing project, "The Perfect Weapon", an e-book short story by author Delilah S. Dawson that takes place shortly before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Tasked by an anonymous client with a job to hunt down an ex-stormtrooper by the name of Jor Tribulus (TK-1472) and recover the mysterious package that he is holding, Bazine sets off on a journey full of espionage, suspense, and betrayal. When the mysterious client promises a compensation that will allow Bazine the freedom to never have to work again, she can't pass a deal like that up, even if she never really intends to quit working.

Her mission takes her to her home planet, the desert world of Chaaktil, where she contacts her old mentor, Delphi Kloda, once Tasu Leech’s number two man and described as follows:

"...the most terrifying slab of muscle ever to lead the Kanjiklub raids. After losing his leg and eye, Kloda couldn’t prowl the space lanes anymore with the dignity he demanded, so he taught new kids how to break bones instead."

Kloda plucked Bazine from an orphanage at a young age and practically raised her, shaping her into the "perfect weapon" that she is today. After borrowing a ship from her old friend, and agreeing to take one of Kloda's students, an intelligent yet street-dumb Pantoran slicer by the name of Orri Tenro, along on her job as part of the deal to take the ship, she sets off to the moderate world of Vashka, the last known whereabouts of her target.

I'll spare you the full synopsis, so you can check this one out for yourself, and I definitely recommend that you do as part of your preparation for the film in December. Bazine is definitely an interesting character, with a cool backstory, and an even cooler skill set. From the moment this story opened in Suli's Cantina, to the final page, I was hooked and left wanting more of this new character. Who knew that this woman sitting on the lap of the giant alien in the Vanity Fair shoot would turn out to be so interesting?

She's obviously in the upcoming movie, but how big her role will be is hard to say. More than likely, she will just be a silent background character, who, in typical Star Wars expanded universe fashion, just so happens to have this amazing history and depth to her character that is fleshed out in other media. Star Wars novels and comics have always added such depth to minor characters from the films that otherwise may have gone unnoticed, and it's great to see that the new canon is continuing that trend. Afterall, what is Boba Fett without the EU works that made so many fall in love?

What I definitely think will have an impact on the new movie is whatever is in that silver briefcase that she is after. Although the contents are never revealed (which was disappointing if not unsurprising), it is definitely important, and will probably be revealed in The Force Awakens. Although we can't say for sure what was in that case, I think it's safe to say that whatever it is holding will be crucial to the film's plot. I speculate that the case contains none other than the lightsaber of Anakin Skywalker, that appears to be a MacGuffin of sorts in the film.

Even without the groundbreaking reveals that some may be wishing for, it follows the pattern of the other books released before it, by giving us just a little taste of whats to come without spoiling anything major. The 60 page e-book is well-written, evenly paced, and definitely worth the two dollars I paid for it. The only negative thing I can really say about this book is that it was too short, but that was kind of implied with it being a short story though, so you'll get no complaints here.

I really enjoyed Bazine as a character and the mystery surrounding her. Even though we know more about her now than any other new character from the film, I feel that there is still so much more to discover about her, and I hope she is explored in other mediums as well in future stories. Afterall, Bazine isn't even her real name.

I look forward to the other four short stories that will be released at the first of next week, and I hope that they are as good of a read as this little tale was. So check it out for yourself, and share your comments below.

Just finished hearing the Audible version, I liked this a lot more than I was expecting...
I'm not sure how I match the familiarity of that picture above to the lipstick killing kisser on the book, but that was a minor quibble...
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought "Did she just got Luke's lightsaber?".
As soon as I finished on the drive home I was thinking that I had to comment that on the cantina!

I really liked it. Though my first thought on reading that she had poisoned lipstick was Saffron from Firefly.
Who do people think the cloaked figure in the hologram was? Odds on Kylo Ren for me, but possibly Snoke with Luke as an outside bet.

Do we have a timeline on this story? How long ago was it, comparing to TFA?
From the "did she just got Luke's lightsaber?" train of thought, I also considered "could the employer be Maz?"... Probably not but it did cross my mind...

On a side note, I only now just noticed that in the pic above she has the black fingers :D

The exact placement on the timeline is not mentioned. But it seems to be only a short time before the film. Could be days, weeks, or months. It's not really clear, but the official description of the ebook says it's set "shortly before the event of the film".

    Hmm ok, thanks.
I'm moving over from "could it have been Maz?" to going full "It was Maz" camp then...
I think it makes more sense, as that is where Bazine ends up *shortly after*, and Maz having been a pirate for a long time links well with hiring someone like Bazine, I think.

If it was longer ago I could see Snoke hiring out, like before having Kylo to do it.
I think Kylo would probably just go for it himself, bust in there lightsaber blazing...

I really enjoyed the sequence of events in the Stormtrooper retirement planet and was left craving more interaction with retired TK's, even hoping some other notable Stormtrooper's like old TK-421 might have miraculously survived his injuries and made it off the Death Star and into the story. I guess we get enough of that in Rebels with Rex and his troopers.
Whats in the box? We don't know but we are all guessing its Luke's saber. So I take it trooper Jor was on patrol at the bottom of the Bespin pit and Luke's hand and saber came crashing down near him like a Robot Chicken reference. I was kind of hoping for something more to how Luke's saber gets to Jakku but I guess this is what is implied.
And finally, did the exploding protocol droid make anyone else think of Dr. Aphra? I was reminded of Triple Zero right away :D

I think I've figured out what's in the briefcase:
Vader's helmet, and that would make the hooded figure Kylo Ren

Its almost going on two years from the release of TFA, dose anyone still think its Luke's saber or Darth Vader's helmet box/case? I'd like to know... Dawson is set to write the Phasma book. I might pick it up since she did a fairly good job with this short story but I can see all so-called connections to TLJ when its finally released. I won't buy into them. I'll just look at it as a separate tale.

I haven't read this yet, but as far as I know, yes, people still think that Vader's mask was there (I haven't actually heard about Luke's lightsaber). As far as connections with TLJ go, I'm not sure how many of them will be. This is Phasma's origin book, so we will probably learn more about the First Order, how they function, what are their goals (or at least, what they think their goals are). Hux will more than likely appear as he is her direct superior and they are around the same age, maybe even Kylo makes an appearance. Only if the book runs past TFA, we might get more direct connections and maybe learn about consequences of her blunder on SKB.

Personally, I do want to know more abut FO as they are military organization seemingly run by mystical figure. If the book follows Phasma since childhood, we might learn how Snoke happened to them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When I first read this short story, I assumed that it was Anakin's lightsaber in the box, but after the dust has settled from TFA, I believe that it is most likely Vader's mask. The movie revealed that Maz came into possession of Anakin's lightsaber, and we still don't know that story yet. But it's clear after the fact that whatever is in the box is not the saber. Bazine was working for a mysterious client that the book alludes to possibly being Kylo Ren or some other dark side figure. She was clearly not retrieving the case for Maz in any case. The mask of Vader I think is the most likely answer to what was in the box given that it is the only other relic we see in TFA besides the saber.

I read this recently and one thing that struck me was Delphi Koda raised and trained Bazine specifically for retrieving the case. Someone anticipated the need for whatever is in the case by well over a decade.

Since this was £0.91 on play books I thought I'd give it a go. It was alright, to be honest, I hadn't given much thought to what was in the case, I just assumed it was a pulp-fiction-esque "what's in the case" trope. Having read the posts here I'd have to say that if it is anything of significance, then it's most likely to be Vaders mask. Since TK-1472 (Jor Tribulus) was a captain on Endor, during the battle of Endor (revealed by TK-1403 (Aric Nightdrifter)), and since Vader was cremated on Endor hours later, it seems more likely than being lukes sabre. Since Bazine was a First Order spy in TFA, it's possible that she gained that role by being the person that returned vaders 'remains' to Kylo.

Overall it was an alright read.
