What is Star Wars about? I think the answer is simply... Love. In this video, I make an argument for the popular 'Reylo' theory, stating my case for why I think the sequel trilogy is a story of the two halves of the Force learning to love each other. For more reading on the subject, I've linked several in-depth write-ups from people who started putting these pieces together long before I ever did. By the end of Episode IX, the Skywalker saga will need to be a complete story that stands on its own. I can think of no better way to accomplish that than through this romance. So as you get ready for The Last Jedi trailer, or take to the internet afterward to find videos speculating about what will happen, I hope this video finds its way to a device near you!

Let us know what you think of both the theory and the video down in the comments, or head on over to the forums to discuss the fate of these important characters.

My usual reaction to fan theories is to shrug my shoulders and go "Meh. I'll just wait and see what happens." But with the Reylo theory, I have a very strong opinion. This is a big one.

Disclosure: Please understand that even though I'm strongly opinionated on the subject, I am not trying to force my view on others, and I'm definitely not trying to troll. I'm seriously interested in others' thoughts on the subject as well.

My initial reaction to hearing fans desire for Rey and Kylo to become a romantic item was honestly.....anger? This was probably a result of my perspective on these two new saga characters, which I love very much.

My first stumbling block in terms of the theory, is that I see Kylo as a young student of the dark side, who goes to great lengths to cement himself further into darkness, and stray away from the call of the light. The biggest example of course being his murdering Han Solo, his father and Rey's father figure, right in front of Rey!

For these reasons, I also have a big issue with the redeem-Kylo-in-the-third-movie idea as well, although I see it as much more plausible than Reylo.

The only way I can even imagine Reylo working, is if Rey falls into darkness, though I don't see Disney doing that.

So far, I haven't seen any backing for the Reylo theory, other than fans simply wanting it to happen. Are there things I'm missing? Knowing what I know now, the fact that the theory even exists blows my mind.

    Thoughts?

For me, it could go either way but I am for some kind of relationship. And the princess/prince trope is very apparent on screen.
But one thing that I would pick you up on to begin with is this idea that Ren is going further into the dark.
The way I see it, despite his protestations, he is very much moving back into the light. The action of killing his father was met instantly with remorse.
Ren didn't feel more powerful, as Snoke promised. He felt weaker.

And what has been made explicit within TFA and the novelisation, is that Ren has compassion for Rey.
Now we can debate all day long why that might exist, but nevertheless, it is there.
There can be no doubt for me that Ren is in some way attracted to Rey. But could Rey ever feel anything for him?
Well, perhaps if she understands the pull of the Dark Side, perhaps when she sees what lead him down this path and that they share the same feelings of abandonment - yes, I could see her developing her compassionate feelings for Ren.

On a more personal level, I found TFA seriously lacking in humanity. No sexual tension whatsoever. ReyLo would provide that in abundance...

Reylo is like, huh? Do you want to kill this franchise? Reylo is self centered arrogance.

I can see Rey forgiving Kylo for the death of Han if Kylo is redeemed. But I didn't see anything in the TFA that leads me to believe they would become an item. So far, he is a monster to her.

Would be a lot to squeeze into two films. I don't really have a problem with it. If it goes this direction I would assume he would turn to the light fairly early in episode 9 (or hell late in episode 8, what do i know).

It is definitely an option after TFA.

Just not a fit for Star Wars to me. There may well be a love story in it, but not centred around it.

    They probably are though.

Makes more sense than Rey falling in love with -

    • The man who killed Luke's Jedi students.
    • The man who tortured Poe.
    • The man who tortured Rey.
    • The man who killed Lor San Tekka
    • The man who ordered a slaughter of an entire innocent village.
    • The man who killed OT hero, pseudo Rey-dad, and his own actual father Han Solo

    Redeemed? Yes. Possibly.

By rey? As family? Even more likely.

Kathleen Kennedy letting her prime female heroine give into girly feelings for a monster...pretty doubtful.

(And before anybody throws out the Vader example - he was redeemed but not innocent. He died. Had he not...he would've been hanged for war crimes. The bloodline novel confirms this)

Also - to answer the opening post: the SW saga isn't about love. It has love elements, but it's not the main thing.

    It's about Family.

(Per GL, Kennedy, JJ, and Carrie Fisher)

    Another day, another Reylo discussion.

    Sigh.

Here you go, love. Consolidated evidence beyond "I wanna dis"

It hasn't even been updated with Rian's comments about them being two halves of something and all that fun stuff.

    In a word - NO.

This ground has been well covered before.

ReyLo is bad fanfic proposing Rey falling in love with -

    • The man who killed Luke's Jedi students.
    • The man who tortured Poe.
    • The man who tortured Rey.
    • The man who killed Lor San Tekka
    • The man who ordered a slaughter of an entire innocent village.
    • The man who killed OT hero, pseudo Rey-dad, and his own actual father Han Solo

    Redeemed? Yes. Possibly.

(And before anybody throws out the Vader example - he was redeemed but not innocent. He died. Had he not...he would've been hanged for war crimes. The bloodline novel confirms this)

Also - in answer the video SWNN posted on this: the SW saga isn't about love. It has love elements, but it's not the main thing.

    It's about Family.

    1) NOBODY knows anything really before IX.
    2) What is "girly" about a strong women and a relationship between equals?
    3) Let's wait and see VIII & IX
    4) judgements before 3) are not useful..

... meanwhile let's cool down and have fun :)

If it's ok for Luke to love his father, why isn't it for Rey to love Ben?

Because SW has and should be based on family love, not a romance screenplay.
