Plagueis by Luceno is also a great read, and portions of it were canonized in his Tarkin novel.

Michael A. Stackpole is another great EU writer. His X-Wing books as well as I, Jedi are some of the highlights of the EU IMO.

So far I have read Labyrinth of Evil, Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, and Darth Plageus. (Did I spell that right?) ;) There are quite a few Legends books/series' that I'm interested in that I'm wondering if anybody would recommend...
    1. Kenobi
    2. Republic Commandos series
    3. Darth Bane trilogy
    4. The Old Republic series
    5. Cloak of Deception

Kenobi was a good read, kind of a western take on his time on Tattooine. I really enjoyed the Republic Commando series, however it was cancelled prematurely due to continuity issues with The Clone Wars animated series, so you will be left hanging on certain points. The Darth Bane trilogy is one of the best book series in the EU IMO, definitely worth a read.

It's been a while since I read the others, but I remember enjoying them as well. Another book taking place in the Prequel era that I highly recommend is Shatterpoint. It follows Mace Windu and it is one of the most riveting reads in the EU.

Okay, thanks! I prefer prequel Legends content, since there hasn't been too much prequel content in canon, so less things have been contradicted/retconned.

I really like the Dawn of the Jedi story arch. All the stories set before and during KNights of the Old Republic is some of my favorite SW Lore.

After about 20 years on my "to read" list I finally scratched off Shadows Of The Empire. It has been so long since I played the game that I didn't remember anything. It was great at times, terrible at others, but almost always a pretty obvious video game tie-in. And in their attempts to hype up the new character from the game they turned him into the biggest Marty Stu since Wesley Crusher. The scenes between Leia and Xizor were really lame, I had to check and make sure I wasn't reading some kind of Star Wars/Harlequin/Bill Cosby novel. The ending was pretty solid though, cool escape from Xizor's castle and space battle over Coruscant. The beginning was pretty solid too, it was the middle part that really dragged the whole thing down. That and constantly having to read as characters marvel at how awesome Dash is. I think I would have loved it if I read it when I was younger. Like younger than I actually was when the book came out. I don't know, 16 year old me may have liked it but as it turned out 16 year old me didn't really do a lot of reading unless he had to for school and for some reason they never assigned Shadows Of The Empire.

Ah, the EU. Good times. I remember reading the entirety of the X-Wing series all the way through Starfighters of Adumar while listening to Tchaikovsky's March Slav. You wouldn't believe how well that song fits in with space battles. ;)

Is there anybody out there who likes The Truce At Bakura? I know my friends and I didn't care for it, and I care for it less as I've gotten older, but I've never really heard any other fans opine about it. Though there was a mention of the dinosaur aliens being kind of dumb in another thread. Even though it's not a favorite it had some really good ideas. I liked the Alliance still orbiting Endor and getting a distress call from an Imperial planet under siege and all the diplomacy/alliances that came with it. It was just that the aliens who had the planet under siege were pretty lame and the entechment stuff was kind of dumb in my opinion. It seemed like the author was watching more Star Trek and Doctor Who than Star Wars, and I'm guessing I'm not the first to wonder if the recent success of Jurassic Park played a role in dinosaur aliens. It may have not but I kind of hope it did as I'd actually understand it as a business move. I can't give it much credit as a legitimate attempt at creating an new Star Wars alien. It's been a couple of years since I last read it, but wasn't Luke kind of over-powered with the Force in that one? I might be confusing it with another book, but it seemed like (especially given this is RIGHT after RotJ) this was one of those books where he just threw around the Force like confetti. But I can't completely write it off because it did have some good scenarios and characters, which is why I've read it a few more times than I probably should have.

I only ever read it the one time. I do remember thinking that the entechment technology was kinda lame. I didn't mind the Ssi Ruuk(too tired to spell check their species name at the moment), in a galaxy as vast as the SW galaxy, I figure there's the possibility of sentient dinosaur aliens. That being said, I could care less if they ever get Canonized.

I was just too lazy, so I called them Dinosaur Aliens. It wasn't just their appearance that I wasn't crazy about (though it was a big part of it), but their society, technology, behavior, etc. Entechment, keeping humans as pets and sitting in their ships doing nothing while robots fight because they're afraid of dying on/above an alien world. Due to the latter they beat a retreat pretty quickly. I guess the real climax was the Alliance/Empire situation that followed, but it seemed a little anti-climactic when they bailed. As for their appearance, I didn't think it was silly because sentient dinosaur aliens were too far fetched or anything, just that it was lazy and the imagery pretty silly. It's like Hoojibs, there's nothing to say that there can't be telepathic bunnies in Star Wars but it's kind of dumb. I'll take dinosaurs over Hoojibs though.

How about the Republic Commandos series? Or Shadows of the Empire? Choices of One? Scoundrels? I'm asking about these books, because I need a surplus to last me through the summer, before my big canon marathon this fall. I plan on diving into Darth Bane/Old Republic books early next year. I know I've asked about some of these before, but I like getting many peoples' opinions on some things like this. What do you guys think of these books?

I really enjoyed the Legacy comics. They are set ~125 years after ROTJ and made for some really fascinating speculation because in some cases they wrapped up threads in the EU novels, such as Jaina and her relationship with Fel, while not revealing the details of what happened between A and B, while leaving other things completely untouched.

I gave them all to my brother as a Christmas present a couple of years ago because he's as big of a nerd as I am, but I (not so secretly) wish I had held on to them.
