Bail told Leia to pick up OB1 and take the guy to Alderaan. Along the way, she got the DS intel. I imagine her plan then was to bring both to Alderaan and (for some reason) didn’t expect the Empire to intervene – two birds with one stone, aren’t I clever? In retrospect, she probably should have just nixed the old goat and headed straight for Alderaan. But that’s teenagers for ya.

Bail gave Leia the mission to pick up Obi-Wan from Tatooine and take him to Alderaan.

The Tantive IV left Yavin IV shortly after the Profundity, got docked to it and left for Scarif to join the battle.

The Profundity received the Rogue One team transmission of the DS plans and copied into a disc that was given from the Profundity crew to the Tantive IV. The ship undocked and left for Tatooine. The DS plans were given to Leia by Captain Antilles.

Unfortunately, the Devastator followed the Tantive IV to the Tatooine orbit and they were taken by Darth Vader.

I think that's the bit the OP is touching on. It maybe wasn’t very smart to make that stop at dirt planet number 35 when you’ve got the golden ticket in your back pocket.

But we don’t really know how big a deal Bail made this Kenobi guy out to be. If he was weighted somewhere equal to the DS specs, then of course she’d keep her date. Can’t judge characters by what happens off screen.

It is canon. Included on the Alexander Freed Rogue One novelisation as well as in the Rogue One six comic adaptation, which is canon too.

I'm not sure what canon aspect you think I'm debating. We're saying the same thing. I'm just offering a possible response to the OP.

Do we see the exchange between Leia and Bail in the novelization or comic? That much is speculation for me. I haven't read either and not sure what they added beyond the movie.

We don't specifically in the Rogue One ones, but in the ANH junior novelisation it is mentioned. Obviously it is not that specific since this novel was released prior to Rogue One but it refers when Bail commended the mission to Leia.

Here is the transcript from the longer, extended ROJ screenplay where it seems Lucas tried retroactively to explain why Leia made a stop at Tatooine and didn't return directly to Alderaan:

BEN Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They
    do you credit.
But they could be made to serve the Emperor.

Luke looks into the distance, trying to comprehend all this.

    BEN (continuing his narrative)
When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant. Your
mother and I knew he would find out eventually, but we wanted to keep
you both as safe as possible, for as long as possible. So I took you
to live with my brother Owen on Tatooine... and your mother took Leia
to live as the daughter of Senator Organa, on Alderaan.

Luke turns, and settles near Ben to hear the tale.

BEN (attempting to give solace with his words)
The Organa household was high-born and politically quite powerful in
that system. Leia became a princess by virtue of lineage... no one knew
she'd been adopted, of course. But it was a title without real power,
since Alderaan had long been a democracy. Even so, the family
continued to be politically powerful, and Leia, following in her foster
father's path, became a senator as well. That's not all she became, of
course... she became the leader of her cell in the Alliance against the
corrupt Empire. And because she had diplomatic immunity, she was a
vital link for getting information to the Rebel cause. That's what she
was doing when her path crossed yours... for her foster parents had
always told her to contact me on Tatooine, if her troubles became
    desperate.

Luke is overwhelmed by the truth, and is suddenly protective of his
    sister.

So in hindsight Lucas (and Kasdan) suggested that Leia somehow knew that she was not going to make it back to Alderaan with the Death Star plans (and decided to dump these at Kenobi's doorstep, in a manner of speaking). One could argue that she nevertheless - being a diplomat and therefore be able to talk somebody into doing something - used the appropriate words in her recorded message:

LEIA General Kenobi, years ago you served
my father in the Clone Wars. Now he
begs you to help him in his struggle
    against the Empire.
(it's admittedly a claim she makes here, but Bail would have asked Kenobi indeed for the same thing, had he known what trouble Leia ran into and what the stakes were)
    I regret that I
am unable to present my father's
request to you in person, but my
ship has fallen under attack and I'm
afraid my mission to bring you to
Alderaan has failed. I have placed
information vital to the survival of
the Rebellion into the memory systems
of this R2 unit. My father will know
how to retrieve it. You must see
this droid safely delivered to him
on Alderaan. This is our most
    desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan
    Kenobi, you're my only hope.

It still makes no sense to me. Not only that, I find such orders rather stupid, especially since it was imperative that Leia deliver the Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance.

Like I said in another post, we didn't see how Bail framed the situation to her. If the impression she got was that the fate of the Rebellion (however accurate) relied on getting this old General to her dad - that he was just as significant as that stolen data, then it makes a sort of sense.
