Again, I'm not saying the scene wasn't fun and that it didn't have comedic beats. But you seem to be arguing that this scene was a spoof. That it's comedy didn't just come from the obvious jokes--the droid trying to back up, etc--but from the way it was filmed, from the slowness of the speeders, all of that.

Star Wars has always had funny moments, for sure. But it never just suddenly goes into Airplane! mode. If this was Space Balls, you would have a point. But this isn't a comedy show with some serious bits, it's a serious show with some funny bits. I don't see any reason why fans were set up to see the scene as a spoof. This seems like a very odd assumption to make.

Even listening to several podcasts about the show, most people who enjoyed the chase don't seem to have taken it as a spoof. They just thought it was a decent chase that could have benefited from being faster.

Based on the precedent of every other Star Wars show and movie, including the other episodes of this series, I don't see any reason to think this wasn't meant to be a mostly thrilling chase with funny moments.

The weird thing about the chase scene is the following:
During close ups the background is actually moving quite fast, but as soon as we cut to the wide angle the pacing is rather slow. Something went wrong here.

Saying this is a spoof is nonsense to me, the directing of the actors and the theme itself felt serious. This made it even more hilarious to look at. All these straight and intense faces while they were riding with 10 mph just made it feel awkward.

Felt serious? Are we watching the same car chase??!?

IMHO, EVERYTHING about the chase was played as a fun, comedic romp through the streets of Mos Espa. Let's play a game of questions to explore this issue further:

    • Who was the villainous 'chasee'? Did this person present himself as a dangerous threat to Boba and his people? Were the facial expressions the Majordomo exhibited in close-up shots during the chase designed by Robert Rodriguez to 'heighten the drama'?
    • Why were the bikes chasing the Majordomo painted bright colors? I complained about the shiny, new look of the bikes in my original review and wondered what the reason for it was. Thinking about the chase, it suddenly became obvious to me that their colors -- along with the bright color of the Majordomo's bigass limo -- were deliberate choices made to have the chase stand out from the otherwise drap street scenes and give the overall sequence more of a comedic flair.
    • Were our new biker heroes presented with any life-threatening obstacles during the chase?
    • Was the camera's focus solely the chase itself or on the various prat-falls taking place along the streets? Were the innocent bystanders who got hit along the way, humans/aliens---or droids?
    • Did the scene end with a firey car crash---or with a load full of fruit falling on top of the Majordomo?
    • Did Boba Fett FLY onto the scene moments afterwards? That WASN'T funny?
Regardless of what you think of Robert Rodriguez, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni should have earned the trust and respect of the Star Wars community by now. To believe this chase was played, in any way, shape, or form, as anything other than a spoof means our esteemed showrunners not only failed, but did so miserably. Come on guys! Do you really think a director like Jon Favreau would have given his approval of this scene if it was intended to be played straight?

I don't want to sound rude but Jon Favreau is an okay-ish director at at the best.

His greatest achievement was casting Robert Downey Jr., now let's have a look at his resume:
Elf, Iron Man 1+2, Cowboys and Aliens, The Lion King (remake), The Orville (1 episode), Mando Season (1 episode), TBOBF (1 episode)

Yes, his strengths are comedy and the chemistry between characters (Tony Stark and Pepper Potts), but but nothing of this is seen in TBOBF so far. Boba and Fennec and bland.

Let's just say I'm glad he won't have to do anything for Kenobi and Andor.

Just rewatched the episode with my dad!

My dad liked the episode and thought it was interesting. He felt bad about the Tusken Raiders and was intrigued by the Rancor. He was also very amused by the biker gang, immediately shouting out "Power Rangers!" on their inaugural Squad Walk to the mayor's palace...and then "Go Power Rangers!" later during the chase scene. My dad is also calling Boba's group a "menagerie." Overall, I don't think he liked this episode as much as Episode 2, but he's still fully on board.

My thoughts really haven't changed, which I consider both a good and bad thing. I will say that I LOVE the set design for Bobba's palace, especially when Boba and Fennec just talk and banter. Which really means that I love the ROTJ set design. Or maybe how they recreated the ROTJ set design?

The rest of my thoughts are more or less the same. The only thing that moderately changed is my thought about the car chase, or rather my perspective on it. I've been reading the conversations about it here and elsewhere, and I think both sides have a point. This car chase wasn't really laden with tension - it wasn't too serious and didn't take itself too seriously. But I also don't think it was funny either, nor did I find it fun, which is what I think the goal was. So, yeah, this was supposed to be a fun scene that wasn't really fun or well done IMO, meaning it failed at what it should have been and what we thought it was. But since I didn't like it in the first place, the perspective change is a little moot.

I too love the look of Boba's palace. It's just a great setting period and full of atmosphere. It was suitably creepy and unnerving back when Jabba owned it, but now it looks quite cozy and inviting.

I was wondering about Arden Lyn as well. Except I know her from the Masters of Teras Kasi Playstation game. Does she appear in some Old Republic material as well?

Honestly i agree, Iron Man 1 is his only great film in my opinion, some of his other stuff is OK but nothing great. Iron Man 2 & Lion King Remake are rubbish.

From some of the lore and information i recieved I believed I heard a Youtuber state she fought Jedi back in the purge. She then gets frozen away in cryo to then be awoken in the future by Sidious and Darth vader although this information could have been false.

The author of this book (and Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina, one of my favorites) just passed away. Have a feeling he would have loved seeing some of the recent happenings on Tatooine. RIP David Farland!

Okay, I've watched it twice now, and still have yet to notice her. Please enlighten me!

I of course saw the Pit Droid in the chase scene, was she lurking about nearby during that??

I don't really know him or his work, but I know Brandon Sanderson speaks very highly of him. Farland was his mentor and co-tourer for a while, and it looked from the interviews and such like they hav a lot of fun. Farland was running a sort of writer's camp thing online, and I was planning to hire their surveices once I could scrape together enough money... I'm very sad to hear him die; by all acounts, we as a great guy :(

Completely agree. In addition to no urgency, there is no emotional connection to these characters. We have a little bit of that because we know that the tuskens meant something to Boba, but we there is nothing about Boba or even Fennec that makes me really care about them which would make me care about things that they care about. The entire show so far seems to be operating on the assumption that viewers will come into this preprogrammed to be connected to Fett. Maybe a decent bet for the hardcore fans, but probably a losing proposition for less serious fans like the ones that made Mandolorian so popular.

Can we also talk about that speeder chase scene? It was cringeworthy awful. The speeders that did not fit with anything in that environment or SW in general. Why was this group of teenagers who couldn’t pay for water (though price gouged water) the only people in that entire city that could afford anything colorful and shiny? So mayors #1 guy couldn’t afford a paint job on his car but these kids could afford to have very stylized, very colorful and freshly washed speeders? Clearly an example of forcing a certain visual that didn’t fit. The pacing of the chase was also terrible. It felt like they were moving so SLOW.

The effects in this show have been mediocre but that scene was really bad.

I am still holding out hope that this is all building up to something great. There were a lot of times in Rebels where I thought we were being fed filler that didn’t matter, but by the end it all made sense (I’m looking at you pergills!). There’s only three episodes left so hopefully that payoff will start soon.

Cad Bane was way overused between TCW and Bad Batch… but I would be kind of excited to see him show up in live action!

You're missing some important stuff there friend. We can't just skim over Iron Man and Elf. Iron Man is a truly great superhero film, easily in the top ten best of all time. And Elf is a total Christmas classic at this point.

Plus, you left out two greats.

Jungle Book live action was actually incredible. We're all kinda sick of the live action remakes now, but this one kicked things off and it was actually great, not to mention a masterful technical achievement.

You also forgot Chef, which is an absolutely beautiful film and much more indie than his usual.

Plus, he only technically directed one episode of Mando, but he wrote much more and he's been the driving force behind all of it. And for myself, along with many other fans, Mando is the best live action Star Wars since the original trilogy.

Honestly, Jon Favreau is massively underrated. Like many good directors, he's had some misses. But he does what he does really well: he knows how to weave action, heart, and comedy in a way that is totally Star Wars.

Favreau, with the help of Dave Filoni, completely revitalized a franchise that was reeling following TLJ and TROS.

The Mandalorian Season 2 had millions of people - both young and young-at-heart - falling back in love with Star Wars.

Have we determined that the chase was indeed "looney tunes-esque"? Was there an interview of F&F?
