I was really looking forward to this episode -- particularly because Bryce Dallas Howard was directing it. I thought her episode "The Heiress" of The Mandalorian was brilliant last year and was really looking forward to seeing her direct an episode of TBoBF. She certainly did not disappoint. It was the best directed episode of the series by far. She has quickly become one of SW's best new directors.

As @DEKKA129 said above: she "gets it."

She gets better with each new episode she directs. Very impressed by her

Anybody else think that Mando saying 'Wizard' after flying the N1 around the pod racing course was a little on the nose?

Sure but it was funny and I like the prequels being embraced in live action in the Mandalorian and TBOBF

Just felt in love with the visuals of this chapter. The old school vibe and its cinematography.
Sorry if there are too many. Tried only to have a few but was impossible.

I suspect Boba’s story will continue in Mandolorian and other upcoming content and shows rather than finish up in TBoBF. Seems this was just backstory to build on?

I can see your point - on first watch it was a bit jarring, but second time around it's more like a PT fan pleasing callback

/\ This is the one scene that didn't quite sit right with me as it felt a bit too 'real world' and not GFFA fantastical enough... I've mentioned it elsewhere, but it immediately reminded me of the opening scenes of Wesley Snipes' Blade movie - which coincidentally I'd only just watched again on Monday night.

Don't get me wrong, the firefight and darksaber aspects were done well - but the environment was a bit jarring for me.

.../\ this sequence though - I'm not ashamed to say I was grinning from ear to ear when TIE Bombers and Probe Droids were on screen #TESBlove :D

...and although it was pretty obvious where this scene was going, it was still fun to watch it build up to the Burt Reynolds-esque "Bye bye nice officer!"

    (skip to 01:46 and you'll see what I mean :D )

Something that didn't exactly ring true was the way Din shows up using the Darksaber right away. At the end of Mando S2, Din couldn't care less about the Darksaber. He offers it to Katan. It's just a thing he took away from Gideon in their fight. Next thing, he's using it as his main weapon on a bounty hunting job without having any experience or training with it. I know the Trandoshans kind of jumped him and he might not have meant to pull it out. But he was pretty quick at resorting to it. He had it ready. Doesn't exactly add up.

    Doesn't matter though.

All I know is that when I see so many people say things like "Finally a good episode..... he said Wizard..... Bryce gets it" I know that I need to not take a lot of criticism I read seriously.

    Two more thoughts:

    - That long shot on the elevator going from the vivacious top floor of Not Halo's party room to the underbelly was just... *chef's kiss*. Disney Plus shows can get kinda schlockey at times (queue Witch Sky Battle or uninspired Cap+Bucky finale) but this episode has some actual filmmaking in it, this being just one example

    - Thoughts on if this could be a good starting point for the series? Really, I'm not sure we can say for sure until the final two episodes, but I think it's reasonable enough that someone could start this entire series with Djarin, joining Fett in the final two. Though I like ep1-4, not a lot really happens in them, storyline-wise. Unless the final two episodes get real lore-heavy and the plot with the Twins or Tuskens play off in a way that absolutely requires their relatively minimalist introductions so far, I feel like this could be a great entry point for someone like my wife who is a big fan of Mando but had no interest in TBoBF.

Loved the episode. Great episode for Episode 1 of Season 3 of The Mandalorian but bad episode for Episode 5 of Book of Boba limited series. I wouldn't mind this episode knowing that Book of Boba was going to have multiple seasons but as of now, we know it's not. This episode was 100% pure filler. fun filler but still filler. I'm still trying to figure out the plot and point of this show. If you compare this show to Hawkeye (which is a fair comparison, 6 episodes and limited run), we know what's happening on Episode 5 of Hawkeye, can't say the same about Episode 5 of Book of Boba. Honestly, you can skip this episode and still not miss a beat with the story of Boba Fett

When I first saw that, and a lot of other things in the beginning and elsewhere in this episode, I laughed and thought "Low budget film making 101". Not that it looked cheap, but just that following characters doing stuff getting in and out of cars, elevators, buildings etc are all things that low budget movies do to pad things out and get "production value". Kind of ironic considering some of the criticism that Rodriguez and his inappropriate low budget filmmaking has received.

This. I mean it's called Book of Boba Fett, but whatever. @NinjaRen and I had a good time watching it (I rated the episode 'good' btw) so that's that.

Depends. When it's someone walking down the street... maybe. Depends on why it's being done.

But explicitly showing off their visually impressive space station setting clearly isn't low budget filmmaking, lol.

And I think it also had a purpose- the move from the lively party to the more somber underbelly showcases the life that Mando chooses to live, rather than that of a typical bounty hunter- his devotion to the Mandalorian cult, which would soon be put to the test. By showing that transition uncut, the difference is highlighted.

Yeah . None of it is low budget film making. Although that criticism has inexplicably crept in this past month.

Usually, movies and shows don't give you a reconnoiter like that unless there is going to be significant action taking place in that same location later on so that when we return there and the action starts, the geography is familiar to the viewer and they don't need to get their bearings. It's similar to checkov's gun. If it doesn't have a definite purpose then you don't show it. Which made me wonder about the whole scene with the luggage check for the star cruiser. I hope that's setting up something for later on.

It depends on how his finale ends but I don't think his main story will carry over although I am expecting him and Fennec to guest star for an episode like The Siege with Cars Dune and Kreef Karga

hmm, I think that's probably an unduly limited idea of why a filmmaker might use a long take, but I'm not going to argue with you any further (and I think my last post did lay out the purpose- did you disagree?). If you didn't like it, I'm sorry. I enjoyed it quite a bit, so I won't let this yuck my yum :)

Not necessarily in a bad way, but I think we disagree on this.

    's all good!

Yeah, that's why I think it's odd that he's apparently getting Grogu first. My crackpot theory is that maybe the fan response to Grogu leaving the show convinced LFL to reintroduce him more quickly than originally planned.

I am really enjoying trying to parse out how much of what the Armorer told Din about the darksaber is pure bias (that she actually believes), how much is "true," and how much is manipulation (truth she is hiding part of or twisting for her own purposes).

One thread of truth from all sides, including Moff Gideon, seems to be that the darksaber has to be won in combat to make it a legit symbol of rulership. (Although of course having a particular weapon is a highly questionable basis for leadership--like swords distributed by watery tarts--the symbolism is pretty powerful.)

The curse stuff sounds like the story of someone who has retrofitted or created a prophesy to fit the current history and massaged the narrative to hold up as a contrast to her own righteous stance...

How much of the duel with Paz and/or the resulting banishment was staged or at least manipulated by her? What is her motivation?

The Armorer would make a fantastic politician! :p

One thing that surprises me is that Din still doesn't seem to have any doubts about his beliefs--he really is the believer of chapter 15 of Mando. His violation of the helmet rule is such an aberration because he believes so deeply that it is wrong to do so, and yet he must make the sacrifice and take the consequences because of his love for Grogu. And he really still trusts the Armorer even though she is clearly responsible for keeping him in utter ignorance of his own people's history. Not a peep of rebellion...

In any case, I am really loving the mystique and legendarium that SW is developing/reviving for the Mandalorians. It gets me right in the just-what-I-want.
