I just want to get a glipmse of the characters, and some sense of the magnitude of what they are about to try and do, and the overwhelming odds they face. This way I can be intrigued about the charaters and want to see how they may succed in such an important mussion against such terrible opposition.

i'd like to know that it all isn't going to take place in space on ships.

nothing makes me more claustrophobic than a movie full of dark corridors, metal, computers, blinking lights, and expansive dark, oppressive views of the limitless cosmos. i confess even ANH gets a little stuffy for me toward the end.

one of the things i really loved about TFA was that there was so much action on the ground and you got to see everyone in "natural" lighting.

Some social media teases here and there begin in April, then the trailer coincides with the release of Civil War.

We get some cool stuff by the time San Diego rolls around again as well.

they need something. They should have had a production video for Rogue One. They could have like a behind the scenes like they did with TFA early on.

I agree with all of this.

Also, while Star Wars essentially is its own self-perpetuated marketing machine, once it starts up, one of the potential main marketing concerns Disney should get ahead of and address is what this movie is about and when it occurs.

Not everyone going to the theater might understand the chronology of this film.

Some viewers who are not necessarily lifelong Star Wars fans might even mistake Rogue One to be the sequel to The Force Awakens.

Special attention should be paid to prepare and secure viewer awareness so Rogue One is properly distinguished from Episode VIII and can achieve the maximum exposure and audience engagement it deserves.

which is why you start promotion now and show people so they understand. Start promoting the characters, scenes, etc.....specially the unknown characters

This is my biggest concern with how well Rogue One will do as I remember buying my ticket for one of the advance showings of The Force Awakens in early December (I didn't know if I would be able to go until then, okay?) and one woman in line for a different movie didn't even know that it was coming out that month. If some people missed that fact, it is possible that many going to see Rogue One will think it is Episode VIII and be very, very confused.
They need to start pushing it.

INT. ROGUE ONE MARKETING HEADQUARTERS - DAY

Marketing Dept.: Fans! Well, this is expected, but still a pleasure. We are honored by your presence!

Fans: You may dispense with the pleasantries. We're here to put you back on schedule.

Marketing Dept.: I assure you, Fans, my people are working as fast they can.

Fans: Perhaps we can find new ways to motivate them.

Marketing Dept.: I tell you that this film will be operational as planned!

Fans: The Critics do not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation.

Marketing Dept.: But they ask the impossible! We need more people!

Fans: Then perhaps you can tell the Critics when they write.

Marketing Dept.: The Critics are writing now?

Fans: That is correct, and they are most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.

Marketing Dept.: We shall double our efforts!

Fans: I hope so, for your sake. The Critics are not as forgiving as we are.

    :p

Full - Celebration (as well as VIII teaser)

I think first teaser with Celebration (they want to have something special at celebration), then around Force Friday a second teaser.
    Full trailer with Thanksgiving.

Remember Thanksgiving is Star Wars trailer day :p

They are not going to release a teaser for EP VIII almost a year and a half before the film is released.

They will. They started filming this past week.

They'll release something along the lines of the Rogue One teaser they showed at Celebration last year - which was over a year and a half before that is coming out.

Not in my opinion.. Although I do like it..

Just because they did it with Rogue One, doesn't mean they will do the same with EP VIII.. So if that is what you think, prepare yourself to be disappointed.

the EARLIEST we could get anything from Rogue One is during Civil War... Let's not forget TFA has BARELY been out for two months now, so it's still considered priority.. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get anything for Rogue One until July or Post-July.. TFA was promoted heavily because the public needed to be re-introduced to Star Wars.. now that everyone is along for the ride, the marketing will cool down.

I won't be disappointed if it doesn't happen. It just makes sense to tease something. Whether it be a 20 second teaser, behind the scenes vignette, concept art montage or whatever.

If anything, it's more likely to happen with VIII than it did with Rogue One simply because of the anticipation for it. It's the sequel to arguably the biggest film in movie history.

BTW, if they do show something, like with Rogue One, I don't think it will be publicly released. Which is fine personally, as I'll be in London anyways.

The fact that The Force Awakens was released two months ago (I was in my seat watching it for the first time exactly two months ago!) means that they should start giving us a little taste of Rogue One. Most people are looking forwards now as most people who wanted to see The Force Awakens have (likely several times).
