Last night, instead of going to bed at my normal time, I stayed up with the iPad and watched a bit of Abrams Star Trek. I thought REALLY hard about how I felt watching that movie the first time, and how I felt watching it again recently.

Then I started getting down on TFA, just a bit. I considered everything Abrams got wrong in Trek, primarily missing the boat totally on the underlying feeling you should get from Trek. It's not an action/adventure story, at least not primarily. This movie increasingly and over time seems a weird facsimile of Trek intended for a Twilight generation. I won't go into a full-blown dissection of the movie, so I'll just say that I really enjoyed it on premiere day, and now rank it more or less between Search for Spock and First Contact. Which means I don't think it's bad, per se, but certainly not great, or even really all that good.

I dunno. I guess the reality sank in that movie audiences have changed a lot since the OT. Naive innocence isn't even really present in children's movies anymore, much less those intended for all-ages like Star Wars. Darkness pervades. While there has been some fantastic genre stuff lately (I love Joe JOhnston's Captain America a little more every time I watch it, and The WInter Soldier is ballz out amazing - I've been a Captain America fan for as long as I've been a SW fan, full disclosure), as well as some really phenomenal YA films like Hunger Games, I'm just worried that the true spirit of the OT was lightning in a bottle. Maybe we should just accept that Pretty Good will be OK, gong forward. Or at least Not Terrible isn't the end of the world.

My question to all of you hard-core SW lifers, are you going to be alright if the new films are obvious products of a Disney overlord and have maybe a slight whiff of corporate exploitation and audience pandering?

And what if the movie just straight up blows chunks? Like Amazing Spiderman 2 levels of suckitude? I haven't even really considered the possibility they've just whiffed it totally. Not until right now. Damn you, reality!!!

I get people are concerned and I don't think the PT helped but you have to give it a real chance. We analyze every last detail about everything here. That's the point.
This is what I plan on doing when the film is out.....Walk into the theater ready to watch a SW movie. Don't sit there and criticize things because you are thinking "Disney made this" or "This isn't GL's material". Just like the first time you saw a SW movie just watch the movie and enjoy it. Think only of the story we know and how TFA fits into it. Let yourself get into the movie otherwise you'll be sitting there overthinking everything and criticizing everything and you may actually misinterpret things. If you do that I'd bet money when the movie comes out on Blu-ray and you re watch it you will say to yourself...."Wow this is better than I remember".

The bottom line is we all have to go into it with an open mind and try to put ourselves in the mindset we were in when we saw SW for the first time. See it as SW while you are watching it not SW that JJ & Disney made. If it gives you that real SW feeling you will totally forget who made it anyway.

Abrams was never a Trek fan. And if you watch interviews he talks about making the film feel more like Star Wars. It was just a good story and a good opportunity for him as a filmmaker. But he is passionate about Star Wars. And I think he gets what makes it special.

It could suck, but it probably won't. The whole point with the Star Trek reboot was to make a different kind of movie. I understand it wasn't the Trek movie that hardcore fans wanted, but it was exactly what the studio wanted. With Star Wars, on the other hand, the goal is to get back to the feel of the first trilogy.

TFA is being made by a bunch of people that really love Star Wars, and that bodes well for it.

Granted, the odds are that it won't live up to the extreme expectations some of us have for it, and it's impossible to please everyone, but I see every reason to be optimistic. I expect it to be better than the Prequels but not at the level of ANH or TESB. I think that's a pretty reasonable expectation.

There is always a chance that it will suck but here's why I don't think it will:

    1. Lucas is gone.

    2. There is now a story group in place. It's always better to have a brain trust of several people to bounce ideas off of so you weed out the bad ideas etc.

    3. That story group has done some nice stuff: Kinberg (days of future past), Filoni (clone wars), Kasdan (ESB), JJ (Star Trek-I liked it)

    4. It's a simple story of good vs evil. It's not rocket science. Lucas has left them with a universe from which there are countless possibilities to choose from and a interesting family story to work from and expand on their lineage.

5 After the prequels, there is only one direction to go...and that's up!

To me it's like making scrambled eggs, it's kinda hard to mess up.

Good writing/dialogue is all I'm asking for. That was the flaw (imho) of the PT.
Also, I saw ESB in the theater when I was 3 years old (1980) as well as the other films. They had the luxury of not being analyzed by me or my friends for another fifteen years. Maybe that's the only real difference between movies then and now?

I have this gut feeling that it is going to be shockingly good. I can just picture it. Our last memory seeing SW on screen was walking out of the theater after seeing ROTS. I remember thinking "that was pretty good" but I just have this feeling with JJ & Kasdan and Disney's resources and the OT cast thrown in with what I think will be a great new cast we are going to be 15 minutes deep and realize we are in full on zombie mode with our jaws hanging thinking "O.M.G. this is already awesome".

In particular I think Kylo Ren is going to be one of the coolest characters ever in SW. Hold me to that.

@El Duderino You beat me to it, explaining that JJ's Trek movies were supposed to feel more like Star Wars than the older Trek; he figured it was going to be his only chance to make a "Star Wars-like" movie, never having been much of a Trek fan to begin with. I wish we had a "I was gonna say that" rating to give, lol.

I too have been tempering my excitement (or trying to, as I'm still on these forums everyday). The more I hear about new rumors and speculation, the more I miss the old EU and the magic I felt reading those novels. Sure, I can still enjoy them, but the appeal was always that, like it or not, those were the official adventures post ROTJ. I don't believe that TFA will suck, but I'm worried that I won't enjoy the new direction nearly as much as the old; here's to hoping that when the dust settles, we'll still have a GFFA that feels like the one I remember, not just from the OT but from the tapestry that was the old EU.

I think a lot of people are over hyped about Abrams. I did like the reboot of Star Trek, except Into Darkness. It worries me that he will take parts of existing Star Wars movies and just swap the characters. Or he could offer up way to much fan service.

Some rumors such as a hand or lightsaber floating through space, would probably just turn me off the movie all together.

Do I think Abrams will do a good job on Star Wars? ...Mabye

What I like so far about Ep. VII:

    - Casting seem to be fantastic. No more actors like Samuel Jackson that were are in about 2-3 films per year (sick of seeing him).
    - The fact they took Kasdan to write the script. Everything in the teaser looks fanastic so far (minus crossguard).

What I don't like so far:

    - crossguard. I realize that Jedi Knights do borrow some aspects of medevil knights. But some things are just not ment to be brought over.

-It will have actually funny and witty banter

    -A bigger budget

-Much more input on the script by multiple experienced screenwriters

-Disney has a lot riding on it

    -The cast seems good

-Ben Burt and John Williams are back

-Abrams can definitely pull off the Star Wars feel (see various scenes in Star Trek 1 and 2)

-More on location shooting and physical sets(or so it seems)

-Uncharted territory will be explored story-wise (with the prequels we knew how it was all supposed to end)

Just a few reasons why I'm not worried. At the same time I am being careful not to think this will be as good as the OT. If it is, sweet. If it isn't, no surprises there.

Depending on the story it should at least be better than the best of the prequels and I enjoyed those.

A great point can be made about this "At the same time I am being careful not to think this will be as good as the OT. If it is, sweet. If it isn't, no surprises there"
People going into the theater expecting to see a movie that is just like the OT I think will be disappointed. This is 2015, there are going to be shots and effects that are possible today that weren't back when the OT came out. It will be far more tastefully done than the PT but expect to see some amazing effects. The story and dialogue and overall wittyness can possibly match up with the OT and that is what is really important.

Ok, to clarify: he did not write Into Darkness, though he was responsible for Khan/not-Khan disaster. And the whole point of the new Trek movies is that they take place in an ALTERNATE universe from the originals, so character swapping/rehashing old plot lines actually makes sense; things are going to happen in a similar, yet different, fashion. So unless the big reveal of TFA is that Luke's saber actually opened a wormhole to another dimension, stop worrying about such things.

And this is really what I'm saying. Maybe not so much that Abrams will make a bad movie that somehow betrays what SW truly is, but more than it might not be possible to make movies like the OT in this day and age.

Are there musicians and songwriters as talented as Lennon and McCartney (and Harrison and Starr)? Of course! Have any of them made an album as magical as Sgt. Pepper's? Of course not. The approach used in the writing and recording those songs was absolutely groundbreaking. Revolutionary. Never heard before. Plenty of people have tried to make their own Sgt. Pepper's but no one has come close. However, musicians who have struck out on their own path, maybe using that record as inspiration but not a blueprint, have made MANY amazing records since.

So let me revise my original skepticism. If Abrams is trying to create a new film that is more or less a recreation of the original film, it's going to fall short. But if he's trying to capture the SPIRIT of the film and make his own Star Wars movie, it could be amazing. Look to Nolan's Batman trilogy for an example, or the new Planet of the Apes. Or Battlestar Galactica! My skepticism remains to the degree that it's a DIsney product, and their goal is commerce, not art. Which Pixar films are best, pre-or post-Disney (Ratatouille and Up were technically pre-Disney productions, even though they came out after)? Lucas had the clout to subvert the Evil Overlords, but not the passion or the talent (God, it's hard to say that because he IS massively talented) to make the movies he wanted to make, that really did break from the OT. The one really positive thing I'll say about the PT is that they really do stand apart as being entirely unique in their design and construction from the OT. They were made with little regard for some higher-up's demands.

Anyway, all I'm trying to do is be realistic. I remember the gradual admission in 1999 that Phantom Menace wasn't especially good. It took weeks, if not months, for me to admit it to myself, even though I knew within the first hour (as a side note, the very first time I saw the movie, during the Gungan sub escape, I said to myself, "This reminds me of a Disney animated movie.. and that's not a good thing..."). I just want to be open to the idea that I might be disappointed for very valid reasons. Despite the cast and the writer and the sound effects and the excitement, it might be a misguided and ultimately bad movie.

the most criticism about the star trek reboot is based on flaws in the script , directing is fine.
if its to starwarsy ok, I understand when a trekie doesnt like it, but start trek wasnt dead without a reason. I still enjoy TNG, DS9 or Voyager but i think they cant compete to modern shows like GoT or breaking bad, the whole universe is outdated. i dont like Mission impossible but his movie made the franchise better. so since i know he and kasdan join forces im really confinced that this is going out well. he is a great director and loves Star wars and thats what matters, kasdan will deliver a nice script. When I saw his TED Talk about the Mystery Box, wich is not what most people see in it (no, its not about leaks), i knew he knows what he is talking about.

I think JJ will have captured the spirit as you mentioned. As others have mentoned the actors seem genuinely excited and they aren't saying things like " It's going to be a good movie" they are saying things like "We were all aware of the magnitude of what we were doing and JJs attention to detail was amazing". That stuff really adds fuel to the fire for me to think this is really going to be good. You can see how Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels have that "kid in a candy store" smile on their faces when they talk about it. They know the story and we don't and more importantly ....They know it's going to be bad ass.

Capuring the Spirit is a good point basicly we all know from current cinema movies that you have to step up, star wars OT, released today, wouldnt be a huge phenomena like in the old days. concerning detail, i just watched kevin smiths impressions of the star wars 7 set, if my exitement is only half of his, im happy.

No need to clarify. I do know that he didn't write it. Directors are usually given the script/script treatments previously to signing a contract. So they can choose whether they want to sign or not.

Regardless of whether you slap "ALTERNATE" universe on it, my view still remains the same. You can throw candy sprinkles on dog sh*t, but guess what?
    It still is.......wait for it...........dog sh*t.

You've got JJ who has done his fair share of great writing.....Lawrence Kasdan who , you know that OT everyone talks about? yeah, he wrote for that...and you've got Disney who clearly needs no introduction they are just one of the largest grossing entertainment companies on the face of the Earth and are responsible for countless extremely successful, great stories/productions.

    It will be good.

It's pretty clear that your views are clouded by some deep-seated hatred. Was it a perfect movie? No. But it was far better than half of the crap that Hollywood pumps out on a regular basis. The fact remains that JJ wanted to make Star Trek more accessible to the average movie-goer, and he succeeded. I'm never going to watch "Wrath of Khan", or the episode "Seed" from the original series, so I appreciate the story being retold in a more modern fashion. Like it or not, Star Trek is now a rebooted franchise; Star Wars is a continuation.

EDIT: I'm not one to nitpick over such things, but did anything I said here really warrant a "Pessimistic" rating?
