    Original Article: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/star-wars-the-force-awakens-ticket-sales-1201621977/

    Excerpt from article;

Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has established a new record, bypassing “The Hunger Games” as to move the most tickets in its first day on sale, Fandango reports. It didn’t just surpass that picture, it shattered its benchmark, outselling “The Hunger Games” eight times over. Traffic to the online ticketer’s site surged to seven times more than its peak level in less than 24 hours.

“This is an extraordinary time for the industry, which experienced unprecedented ticketing demand last night for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,'” Fandango said in a statement. “The enthusiasm for this year’s most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on Dec. 18.”

Hunger who?? Also move over Jurassic World!!!

It was no surprise to any of US that this was going to happen!
I told my college-aged children, who were supposed to be helping me try to get through online, to not be surprised if they couldn't. Sure enough, I ended up having to call a friend who lives in town and she went down and got them for me.
My husband was at a meeting when I texted him with the images of the tickets, and his friends said I was obsessed. Well, we'll just see about that.... it won't be my kids with long, sad faces on opening weekend, that's for sure. (leia)

Yep, just like some people predicted; TFA has been shittily marketed and will be a total flop at the box office *sarcasm* :p

This is awesome! When my husband and I were buying our tickets I knew TFA was going to be huge. So many people in line for tickets at 8pm central for a movie that won't be out for another two months? Yeah it's huge. I wasn't expecting 8x Hunger Games but I'll take it.

I did my part! I'm now seeing it 3 times on the 17th lol. If I can help it I'd have probably seen it about 10 times by Christmas

You must be a millionaire then with too much free time.

I'am glad that I got two tickets for the 23th dec. the onslaught/run on the tickets was abnormal yesterday.
During the first two weeks, there will be many sad faces in the cinema when they find out that all tickets are sold out two months ago.
I predict it will be a bad time for spontaneous moviegoers who want to watch TFA who don't pre-ordered tickets.

Haha. I'm so far beyond broke I should be worried, but I couldn't care less :p Only paid about £40 ish for those 3 tickets. I do have too much free time though.
I'm lucky to live in a very sleepy part of England so getting tickets wasn't a problem and nobody who cares about the film missed out so i don't feel greedy. There's still tickets available for the 17th in the cinema's near me

I disagree. I don't think people will have a hard time getting in opening weekend. My local AMC has 34 showings thursday night alone. Maybe smaller 1 screen markets will be overbooked, but most cities can just convert every screen to star wars to accommodate the rush.

I agree. Opening night I anticipate is mostly snapped up by now (and if not will definitely be come December), but the rest of opening weekend I think will be fine, Star Wars is going to be playing on as many screens as the theaters can contractually put it on I feel.

Sorry, but I have to disagree, because it's a point of view and where you're living.
Here in Germany the tickets are sold out in big citys, I have the bad luck to live in one.
We don't have cinemas with 34 screens, the biggest one nearby has 21 and they play the movie not in every cinema hall.
Be happy that you got tickets for the opening weekend.
I pre-ordered 8 hours before the trailer was shown in the U.S. and I was lucky to get 2 tickets for 23th dec.
I wanted to go to the premiere on 17th or 18th, but the first week must have been completely sold out in seconds.
So I was not wrong with my post.

I didn't have much problems here in germany and I could still get more tickets in the city, they just opened more showrooms. I got pretty perfect seats around 12h in advance to the trailer. The Cinemas will just kick some older movies out, sucks to have a release in december, I guess.:)

I couldn't get tickets just yet. Now I fear I won't get to see this film for a couple of weeks at least.

I'am sorry to hear that my friend.
That is what I was afraid of.
This is crazy, you can't get even tickets one day after the pre-order sale started.
The spontaneous moviegoers will be surprised that they are not able to get tickets in the first and second week of screening.
If many people spontaneous decide to watch the movie without pre-ordering it - good luck they will need it.
I'am glad that I got tickets, not on my wish date, but right now it looks that it doesn't matter anymore. (Nonetheless I was lucky)

Yeah. I'm sure I'll be ok somehow. Maybe I can get to a theatre out in the middle of nowhere and I'll be able to see it, who knows. I am interested in how the weekend ticket sales is going to work? If the opening weekend is already sold out ( which I honestly believe it is in online sales alone) Are all the people that couldn't get tickets online going to give their business to another movie? Looks like Disney could unknowingly make a bunch of other movies money.

Perhaps the theaters will be smart and figure if they have already sold out of their planned screenings of TFA they should bump some of the under performing movies to give more screens to TFA. If I was a manager and all my screens for TFA were sold out and I had screens showing a movie a week out from going to the discount screens I would bump it quick fast and in a hurry. That way they still had some tickets for the predictable spontaneous movie goers that won't pre-order but would likely want to see it. Maybe not for opening night but certainly on the weekend and Christmas weekend as well.
