(Obviously there'll be spoilers for both the movie and the book in here...)

I'm about 50 pages in so far and I've noticed a few key things.

    • It starts with Leia and it talks about how she was the only one of the Resistance command that wanted to look for Luke. She wanted to go personally but they wouldn't allow it and a compromise was reached that allowed Poe to be the one to go (but they weren't 100% on that idea either).
    • Lor San Tekka is described as a 'soldier of fortune' and a man who has achieved a great many things in his time. Some of the description makes it sound like he's Boba...but..yeah. I'll leave that one alone.
    • The Stormtroopers are still called "Imperial Stormtroopers". It was only one occurrence so it might be a one off thing...not sure.
    • A random villager kills Finn's friend, not Poe
    • They go into a little more detail about the relationship between Lor San Tekka and Kylo, but not much. Basically Lor knew Ben as a man before he became Kylo.
    • It has the scene where Rey is cleaning her salvage and watches the family at the 'bus stop' as opposed to looking at the old lady in the film.
    • Rey eats her food and wears the X-wing pilot helmet inside the AT-AT as opposed to by the foot.
    • Teedo is said to be the species of the character that tries to steal BB-8, not his actual name.
    • Rey actively tries to sell BB-8 to Unkar Plutt. She deactivates him, haggles Plutt up 100 full portions and it's only when Plutt mentions about giving BB-8 to the First Order that she backs out of the deal.
    • There's extended tensions when Finn is sneaking Poe out. Mostly just other troopers and droids walking past that might notice somethings up.

That's where I'm up to, I'll post any other interesting things I find.

    • We actually get a little bit extra after Poe & Finn's TIE gets hit. The cockpit is filling with smoke and Finn calls out for Poe with no response. He then ejects and goes down to the surface.
    • After the crashed TIE is sucked down into the sand, we get one of the lines from the toys: "I don't...know what...to do!". He basically yells it to the desert.

The novel describes a scene we saw in photos but not in the movie - Hux and Phasma reading Finn's record. He is completely average, with no prior offenses. Hux is determined to hide what happened from other troopers, because: "If there was one thing a competent fighting force did not need, Hux knew, it was unforeseen outbursts of individuality."

It's one of like 3 of Phasma's scenes, where she says that this is his first strike, etc., he's been brainwashed, etc. etc. etc.

I can't wait to read the novelization. I'm gonna wait until January though, so I can get the actual book(I'm not interested in reading on a tablet).

In the novel, Leia says that she is not safe even in the Republic, some of the Senators think she is crazy and do not heed her warnings about the First Order. She even say she might be killed if she goes in front of the Senate alone.

    Description of Snoke:

According to the novel, Ren and Snoke know that Vader killed the Emperor. They blame his sentimentality for the fall of the Empire.

The novel has a bunch of missing scenes - scenes with Leia feeling the deaths of the Republic planets and leading the Resistance and Poe surviving and getting back to the Resistance Base. I wonder if they cut some of the Leia scenes because Carrie Fisher was saying she had problems memorizing her lines.

The novelization makes it clearer that Han and Leia probably would have reunited if Han had come back. Han says to her "There's something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time" and Leia says "Tell me when you get back." It also says that Han basically only goes to Ben because he wants to reunite with Leia and bring their son back home. So he dies trying to reconcile his family :(

It goes into more detail about Ben's backstory and how Snoke watched over him from the day he was born and was manipulating him from a young age. Leia felt he was going dark even as a child so she sent him to Luke's academy.

I like Finn a lot more in the novel. Much less spontaneous situational humor.

And: after the attack on the castle, after he fought with the saber she tells him she likes what she sees in his eyes now: a warrior

When Kylo mind probes Rey he brushes up against a barrier inside her mind, he pushes against it and something happens and suddenly Rey is in his mind.
That unlocks something within her that leads her to try and Force mindbend the Stormtrooper

It's noticeable that the book was written off the original script and leaving out several slight alterations by actors during filming.

"...and for the he first time Han Solo saw the face of his son as a grown man"

    What the heck!

How old had Ben been when he turned dark?
And for how long has Snoke had his fingers in him?!

Anyone else getting a string EU Anakin vibe from him?
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 18, 2015 ---
“It is you,” Ren murmured. (to Rey as she pulled the lightsaber from his grip)
Not for the first time he seemed zu know more about her than she did.

    AAAAAAAAAAAH
    It's true!
    It's all true!!!!!!!

The more I read, the more I feel Snoke really fears Luke. Does he have a first hand experience?

"Standing at the foot of the ramp, an uncertain and uneasy Leia found herself fiddling with the seals on the front of the jacket Rey was wearing . Foolish nonsense, she told herself even as she continued. Unworthy of her status and position. But it felt so right, and so natural, to be doing so."

    I can't stop screaming!
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 18, 2015, Original Post Date: Dec 18, 2015 ---
I was willing to hate the book. Stylistically it came of to a rocky start and it just is... Not exactly high literature and I'm a Maclunkey writing snob.

But just like the movie it drew me in and grabbed me, the story just a tad more complex than the movie's can be, with less limitations placed on page count.
Just little scenes that gave additional info that is vital, maybe not to the overall story but to the characters and the flow of the narrative.

Some of these, lines of dialogue especially between Leia and Rey or between Kylo and Rey in my opinion intentionally omitted in the movie to obscure the connection.

But yes, the connection is real!

I don't have the book yet but it's on my Christmas list. Does anyone know how canon it is? If there are parts that contradict the movie canonicity might start getting troublesome.
