For sure, and i'm pretty sure the militant haters of this movie would have lost their sense of magic years ago..

Lots of the original magic was in the old 'republic serial' (Flash Gordon King of the Rocket Men) style of pulp fiction storytelling. Basic characters, simplicity, worlds of wonder and heaps and heaps of cliffhangers.
Dear god, let there be cliffhangers :)

As much as I liked the ending of Empire.. I always had the opportunity to just put ROTJ on after as I saw them in the 90s..

but a cliffhanger with a three year gap? That would be extremely frustrating (emperor)

The fact we had to wait three years after Empire made the (playground based) speculating all the more fun.
I always felt it was part of the DNA of Star Wars and was disappointed by the lack of cliffhangers in the PT.

agree with the wait for the next one if you thought the speculation was bad for this one it going to go insane for the next two (plus this time there is many more sites out there trying to get a exclusive scoop on what will hapen)

Why should it have to? As long as it is a good Star Wars movie I'm happy.

If it's close to being as good as TESB, I'll be very happy.

I argued with my cousins and friends for years about whether Darth Vader was actually Luke's father, or if he was just lying. My innocent boy mind just could not accept it as truth. I hope I can have the same types of arguments after The Force Awakens with my boy!

I really agree with you on this. Star Wars was an inspired work of genius and passion, plus it hit the industry like a bolt from the blue because it was unmatched in terms of effects, and a return to epic storytelling. So much of what made it legendary was that it was released at a time that can never happen again.

On the other hand, if we ever needed an epic tale full of heroes and bad guys, the dark side and the light, it's probably right now. Do they have the nerve to tell it that way again? Or will they bow to the cynicism of the age? That's what remains to be seen, in my opinion, because that's what the PT suffered from- too much of a reflection of people's concerns at the turn of the century. The movies just seemed to become so.... small.

I am encouraged by what people have said who've apparently seen the script, and watched bits of the actual film. However, these people are also the ones who bring us our usual fare at the movies and on TV, so.... I'm not sure I share their taste.

But I absolutely am open-minded about it. I'm not the kind of person who really gets too set in my ways, or carries a grudge or anything like that. I wouldn't say nothing could ever top Star Wars ANH or TESB. It could. And I'd be perfectly happy for it to, if it really is that good. I would love to fall in love with another movie the way I fell in love with Star Wars.

I honestly think it will be the greatest of the new trilogy much like Phantom Menace was for the PT..IMHO ofcourse..

It won't be possible to tell for sure for another 10-15 years ?

ESB was not considered the best Star Wars chapter not until many years after.

But for sure, next month... fans will say: TFA is second best after ESB :)

Like they said in 1999 that TPM was better than ROTJ.

I'm not sure that's the main problem I had with the PT, but I think you're absolutely right about the purity of Star Wars being one of its big allures. That type of story appeals to kids instinctively, and if done well (as it was) it is a refreshing escape for adults. Now that I think about it, that may be why I loved the Lord of the Rings movies so much. I had such high expectations because of the books but I was not disappointed. The movies maintained the tone of the books and did not try to adapt the story to make it "relevant". They didn't inject any unnecessary gray.

It would be nice to see a new chapter where we don't have to fret about the moral shortcomings of the good guys and the perspective of the bad guys. We'll see what happens.

I think it's different today as most fans will reevaluate after they buy the Bluray around next spring and really watch it multiple times at home.

ESB was reevaluated by fans for many reasons:

    1. Alot of young kids like me didn't like the dark tone in 1980, and when we watched it again years later as adults its a totally different experience.

    2. Alot of fans didn't like that ESB didn't have an ending in 1980 as trilogies were not a given like every franchise today. Not everyone saw the big picture in 1980 that everything would wrap up in 1983. My older brother still talks about how he was so pissed that the movie didn't have an ending like The Original SW, yet now he loves ESB because he sees it in its true context as part 2 of the Trilogy.

    3. Not many fans could watch it again on home video back in 1980 like you can now. Heck, I think ESB didn't come to HBO til 1985? 1986? So that's 5 years to see the movie again!
