I love Darth Maul and I loved this cameo HOWEVER (Spoiler alert).

-Not many people have seen the movie, so it's irrelevant.
-They confirmed that they came up with this like what, 2 minutes before releasing the movie? Why do you keep doing this? Even Star Lord has a plan!
-Those who watched the movie, probably were f*cking confused. Why did they think this was a good idea? "Reverse expectations" again?
-People were waiting for Boba, Jabba or Greedo. We got none of those. But wait for the sequel....
-Aaaaand there won't be any sequel. So, a Han Solo movie that nobody wanted but still had the opportunity of expand this characters (and making money with them) without any of this characters..
-Ok, we get Maul. Why? Is there even a reason?
-They shouldn't have killed in Rebels. A cartoon. Seriously, they could have put him on an epic Obi Wan or even Darth Maul movie that ends on an epic fight. Instead, we know how he will die and that he never crossed paths again with Obi Wan since CW until that fight.

Just saw this image on Reddit. Could it be an actual promo shot of Ray Park as Maul? Definitely looks legit! Can't find the source, though.

While this ship (Kenobi vs Maul) has sailed, I liked the idea of a Boba Fett movie about him being hired by Vader to deal with Crimson Dawn. With mandatory appearance of Maul, that is.

But yeah, looking at these photos makes you want more of him in ANY live-action form.

The issue with Maul from the EU point of view is that he has got mechanical legs in SOLO while he seemingly hasn't got them in REBELS.

And the issue with Maul from the casual viewer (who doesn't know Maul resurrected in TCW and died in SWR) point of view is : so HE is alive... where the hell has HE been during the times of OT ?

I have watched the sequence again.
Igniting the lightsaber could have a true meaning in the movie.
The ignition happens at the end of the conversation, not in the middle. It's like a final mark. When Maul does that, he is speaking to Q'ira: "you and I will be working more closely...". I think this is clearly a menace towards Q'ira, and the saber enhances the menace. I see it like Maul didn't finish his sentence: "... and you know you may not betray me, dear Q'ira, otherwise I'll slice you with this saber".
Look at Q'ira facial expression just after that (1:21 in the video) : she is actually and obviously frightened.

Q'ira boldly lied to Maul when she reported what had happened to Dryden Vos. Did Maul feel that lie ?

Otherwise, that reminds me another scene ;) ... Replace Maul with Vader. Replace Vos by Admiral Ozzel. Replace Q'ira by (future-)Admiral Piett.
Ozzel fails and Vader replaces him with Piett = Vos dies and Maul replaces him with Q'ira, making her step one stair up in the hierarchy (come with me on Dathomir)

It really is a shame how the PR mess with TLJ and the marketing mess of this movie maybe cost some really intriguing sequels. I'm sure the stories will come out in one form or another, but I'm interested in seeing the next adventure for Han when he and Chewy join Jabba's gang for the next big heist. That story would probably be where they introduce Boba Fett, Dengar, Bosk, IG-88, and all of our other favorite scumbags.

At this time on Tatooine, we will be seeing a transformation for Jabba. The Jabba we meet in Phantom Menace is very different in his interests and his planetary role than what we see in Return of the Jedi. I'm curious what he is up to in the lead-up to his deleted scene in A New Hope. Based on Legends and the Kenobi one-shots in the Canon Star Wars comic, the Tuskens were especially active at this time as self-defense posses of farmers (including Uncle Owen) take part in a range war with the Tuskens during an intense drought. Jabba's thugs aren't helping the problem but stirring up both sides and controlling what little water is available. In Legends, the Tuskens are being led by a former Jedi named A'Sharad Hett. He and Kenobi knew each other and Hett even took on Anakin as a Padawan for a little while when everyone thought Obi-wan was dead. We don't need to see either of them in this movie, but it could do a lot to set the context and conflict for the Kenobi movie.

Maybe Qira's story would continue, too, somehow, and we'd get a chance to see what she and Maul get into with Crimson Dawn at this time. I'd like to see how Maul goes from a crime boss to a loopy old man on Malachor. I don't think Kenobi has any direct impact on either of these stories but he is certainly on the periphery of both.

God, I'd love to see him show up in some kind of Star Wars story. You can't leave us hanging like this, Lucasfilm!

This makes the use of of Maul in rebels all the more confusing. Could they not have avoided the Kenobi/Maul confrontation and written a story sequel for Solo that included Kenobi/Or allowed for a Kenobi spin off? We'd then get a proper Kenobi vs Maul 2.0 (and a reason for a Kenobi film) as well as a strong story for a 2nd Solo. Again, it strikes me that too much of this new canon has been rushed and people aren't talking to one another. Filoni could've been all over this!

They gotta make a Solo 2. Han's actual story isn't even what we need to see more of, even though Alden Ehrenreich did great and I'd love to see him do more. But the Maul & Qi'Ra / Crimson Dawn story...I gotta see more of that. And yeah, how does Maul go from all that to just a lost old man on Malachor?

I've just watched Solo again recently and the Darth Maul reveal is still so confusing.

Despite being an avid fan of the SW movies my EU knowledge is limited and thus it took a Google search after the film to realise he survived TPM and was given metal legs.

When I watched the film the first time it was just one huge head scratching moment! Talk about taking you out of the moment! Instead of paying attention to the screen I immediately started rummaging around in my mind to decipher what era Solo was supposed to be. After all Darth Maul couldn't possibly be alive after having been sliced in half and falling down a massive shaft.

My biggest criticism is that there's an enormous amount of EU stuff out there for the hardcore fan to invest time in, so why the need to add something to Solo that only the hardcore fan would understand. I love the SW movies but am not a big reader and have little time for comics or cartoons. Thus for those movie goers like me I felt disappointed that this pivotal moment was in for the sole purpose of appeasing the hardcore fan at the expense of the SW movie fan like myself. These types of twists etc should be consigned to the EU where they can be explored and digested by those who wish to go there.

Finally this scene has also opened up a huge can of worms in that it's now safe to say that anyone who dies in the GFFA can be reserected. Will we see a Snoke, Boba Fett, Han Solo, Phasma cameo? I know SW is fantasy but even fantasy must have it's limits, Maul was sliced in half for heaven's sake!

I loved Solo, but for those that don't invest the additional time in the EU, this cameo for me was an epic failure in an otherwise excellent SW film.

Well said and I agree with you.....as a huge fan of SOLO that scene too was jarring for me. Would have been better off left out.

You can thank George Lucas for that. It was his idea. I personally think bringing back Maul was a stretch for the SW universe but as someone who knew he was alive (saw TCW and watching Rebels), it was nice treat to see him back on screen again since he was a wasted character in the first place.

I have a query about the Maul cameo. In the canon of the Prequels, Maul perished in TPM, then it turned out he survived in TCW and was slain again in Season 3. How is he in Solo?
