I agree that you have to kind of view the animated series as their own separate entity compared to the films, which I think a lot of people do. For me, when The Clone Wars initially aired, Darth Maul’s return made me lose interest in the series—not because I hated the character, but because I loved him and felt like retconning his death was a cheap move. I like that it expanded his potential and made him somewhat important beyond The Phantom Menace, though, because I really do believe he would’ve been a far better villain that Dooku or Grievous. (Both of them are solid villains, but I just think Maul is more interesting, he’s scarier, he has the better fight scenes, and he has the potential for a really great background story. That being said, I like that Dooku has a connection to the heroes, having been the apprentice of Yoda and the former master of Qui-Gon.)

Eventually, I went back and rewatched The Clone Wars on Netflix in its entirety and really enjoyed it, and after that, I watched Rebels, which I also really loved (probably a little more, to be honest). Dave Filoni has done a great job with the animated series. My one concern with him is that he relies heavily on bringing back old characters. In some ways, that works great. Rex and Ahsoka were easily two of the three best characters introduced in The Clone Wars (the other being Ventress, even though she had popped up on the previous Clone Wars show and in Expanded Universe materials before), so seeing them make returns was really great. But again, we’re relying heavily on Maul, a character that never should’ve returned to begin with.

I did enjoy Maul being a part of both The Clone Wars and Rebels, but it was also at the expense of one of the best parts of The Phantom Menace. That was such a perfect moment, in some ways I wish they would’ve left it alone. (If they were going to revive him, it should’ve been in Attack of the Clones, not in an animated series that most moviegoers probably didn’t watch or follow.)

So, I do have issues with the fact that they revived the character at all, but he’s still one of my favorites and him popping up in Solo would be REALLY exciting.

Also, I just thought this might be worth mentioning, but Hasbro released a two-pack of Darth Maul and Qui-Gon that felt like the weirdest choice ever for the Solo toy line, but if Maul is in the film, maybe they were foreshadowing it all along....

I wonder what Maul will look like.

His horns are a little longer in Rebels than in TPM. Maybe even moreso than in Clone Wars.

I'm afraid so. I had the misfortune of stumbling upon an Insta story from someone who attended the premiere.

Welp... I can't get the spoiler tag to work.

a bit disappointed that there using a Force user. Since it's a cameo, he'll get even less screen time then in TPM. I hope i'm wrong, but still

I absolutely hate it. Because I absolutely hate the idea of Maul surviving his defeat on Naboo. He was CUT IN HALF and then FELL HUNDREDS OF METERS. I'm quite sure it was suppoused to mean he's gone, dead, not-alive anymore. And I was absolutely fine with it, Darth Maul was awesome (his looks, his performance), but Kenobi was better. End of story. Maul's dead.

When I've heard they revived him in TCW... I thought (and still think) it was very, very cheap. It didn't bother me since I did not watch TCW or Rebels (besides few episodes, a bit too childish and naive for me), but I still thought it was really lame.

So far I thought "Solo" might be really well done "fun" movie. Now I know I'm going to hate at least few minutes of it.

Yeah, that may ease the pain a bit. I just hope he'll never get any larger role in (possible) future Solo sequels.

Every word! Couldn´t express it better. I was never interested in Solo origin in the first place, no matter what actor plays Han. With Alden I was sure. But even if I would see this movie eventually (some time in the future) - I´m happy to know that with Maul miraculously resurrected I can happily and peacefuly ignore this movie for good. Don´t get me wrong - I´m happy for everyone who enjoys everything Star Wars, I just don´t need to see everything to be happy myself :)

Recycling old characters - villains especially - is just lack of imagination. It is really hard to come with a decent villain, not to say iconic. Not much people have the imagination of the Maker...

It could be that Maul has put together the Shadow Collective back (it would fit the rumoured presence of a pyke...). Of course I don't believe the name would be mentionned in the film, but it would be very cool to see some kind of crime/dark side Rebellion opposed to the Empire and led by Maul.
That would add a layer of depth to the fight against the Empire, provide a great opponent for a second Solo/Lando movie and even set up... the Kenobi film ?

All speculations of course, especially since any Maul story has to be finished before 4BBY (and even before that if we believe he was stuck on Malachor for some time).

That character design looks a whole lot more like TPM Maul than Rebels/TCW Maul )though obviously it's really blurry).

And I don't know... I don't really get the "there's no way he's still alive" argument. I mean sure, he got cut in half, but we know he's a strong dark side user- are we really going to pretend like that's outside the realm of possibility that he managed to use the dark side to survive (in addition to Talzin's magics later)?

Plus, regarding the fall... come on. His fall is almost ripped straight out of Luke's fall in ESB.

It's not like we ever see him splat on the ground. He's lost to darkness.

In fact, I remember around the time AotC came out, there was some speculation Maul would be back.

A little bit of imagination helps, when we're discussing our space wizard series.

I mean, I guess that could be... but it's definitely Maul.

At the very least, Kenobi or Sidious would've known the difference.
