Are you sure about that? I thought that was because it was actually a good movie with good characters. Besides, pretending as if the circumstances surrounding Episode V reflect those surrounding Episode VIII is dishonest.

After the fact. ESB was hella divisive when it came out amongst the fans. Maybe you enjoyed the movie even back then but that doesn't really signify anything. The general trend amongst the fandom was against it. Just like with TLJ.

That kind of paints most, if not all, criticism against it as pure ignorance rather than from a place of actual analysis. Which is misguided. Also, you missed my edited portion.

TLJ has to back up seven films while TESB only had to succeed one. Also, the status of those making and overseeing the production of the film have changed dramatically which affects the standards set to a great degree.

    Just go on 4chan /tv/
The whole board is at war, the whole board became a star wars board, people can't post anything about other shows or movies.
Some people defend it and some hate it, most of those negative reviews come from people who haven't seen the movie (eventhough I'm sure many people genuinely didn't enjoy the movie of course).

People are going to sh*t on popular stuff, it will never change and in this case, the amount of haters is in correlation with its success. Star wars is very popular...

Being on any side will blur the way you view the movie and the things you enjoy, don't join. I agree with both sides, I love this movie but the haters come up with funny stuff as well, exaggerated but funny still.
Just take it for what it is and don't join

    sorrymybad.jpg

I've seen it 3 times already and still like it very much

Not at all. I just suggested that it was one of the reasons why fans had such a visceral reaction to it. Its negative tone. And its negative ending.

The status of those making and overseeing the production shouldn't be what you base your criticism on. Most of the greatest movies of all time have been small, indie fares. Blockbusters have more people to please. Something that dilutes the storytelling.

4chan is so toxic. They've made trying to be edgy an art form.

The storytelling has been more than diluted, I'll tell you that much.

Every time I scroll down the TLJ imdb page I see a highly rated helpful review with 1-4/10 stars. Good to see people speaking up and not eating the bs Disney (or should I say RJ, it's his writing after all) tries to feed us.

I will say this. You can never really put any stock into user reviews unless you know the reviewer.

In order to get any value from a review, you must understand the motivations, taste, expectations, etc of the reviewer. Rotten Tomatoes current user reviews are from emotionally disappointed fans/movie goers for their own biased/emotionally and highly subjectively opinionated reasoning.

If I take any of those into consideration, what exactly does that mean? It means that I can care less about an "accurate" review and either don't really care about Star Wars or really have no confidence in my own opinion.

I think the professional Critics got this one correct, users reviews--not so much

I've seen it twice already and headed to a third viewing. The second time was better than the first and I can't wait to see it again.

Yes it went in a different direction than most everyone expected, and it was a amazing for it! but yeah even that is my opinion... go see it for yourself and form your own opinion

The film is different and people don't like different. I'm not concerned with online polls. They're not scientific and they're a better measure of minority outrage than general reaction. It kind of reminds me of all the upset Star Trek fans when JJ rebooted it and made it entertaining.

I for one enjoyed the film. I'll see it again tomorrow, but I doubt I'll see it as many times as TFA. Star Wars was back and it was great watching it in a theater again. Now we've had Rogue One and The Last Jedi. In six months we'll have a Han Solo film.

If you didn't like the film that's fine, but there a plenty of people who loved it. People saying it's "terrible" or the worst Star Wars film are simply caught in a hyperbole bubble. People like what they like and if you disagree with story choices that's fine, but let's not pretend that this was a terrible film. It wasn't.

Gamers and fanboys: an angry mob indeed. Don't put to much attention at this kind of internet activism. Critics scores and the raw numbers of the box office is what truly matters in deciding whether a movie is good or not.

The user score reflects a deep seated fear people have of class structure being torn down. TLJ is about rejecting nobility and bloodlines in favor of the poor and downtrodden. The low user scores are people who can't accept that greatness can come from people like that.

What I've realized about Star Wars is everyone is too close to it.

Everyone has their one ideal version of what they wanted TLJ to be. TFA to be. No matter how much one likes it, there will be that feeling they could have done this or that with a character. That's why imo, people should never score a Star Wars film after first viewing. I don't.

Second viewing is needed for proper context and objectivity.

The biggest problem is that while all of us wanted to see certain things, there is a very loud, hyperbole-filled contingent of fans who somehow have come to believe that the way that they wanted things to go should have happened and because they didn't, this is now the worst Star Wars ever.

Also, the poll has picked up another 13,000 reviews overnight with a bunch of 1/2 star ratings. That's not rational lol. More folks have now officially scored TLJ in less than 3 full days than Thor has been scored in a month and a half. At this clip it will have Justice League's score count by Monday.

Exit polls are better. I mean there were user reviews on RT and IMDB before the movie EVER even came out, so that tells me alot right there and motivations.

I agree there's some foul play. It might be a polarizing movie, but it seems suspicious. Many, Inc myself, loved it, but nobody who loves it is looking to review multiple times. When I was in the car biz, we always acknowledged a happy customer tells anyone who asks, an angry one tells anyone willing to listen and then some. Plus there's no vengeance like an angry nerd with a keyboard and nothing better to do with their time

He's right. Here is an article for the official Star Wars website that gives samples of the good and bad from critics of that time.

    http://www.starwars.com/news/critical-opinion-the-empire-strikes-back-original-reviews

This is my favorite excerpt of the article because It's funny.

“Scenes linger in the mind: the light playing on Darth Vader’s gleaming surfaces as this metal man, who’s like a giant armored insect, fills the screen; Han Solo saving Luke’s life on the ice planet Hoth by slashing open a snow camel and warming him inside; Luke’s hand being lopped off, and his seemingly endless fall through space; Chewbacca, the Wookiee, yowling in grief or in comic fear, his sounds so hyper-human you couldn’t help laughing at them; the big-eared green elf Yoda, with shining ancient eyes, who pontifically instructs Luke in how to grow up wise — Yoda looks like a wonton and talks like a fortune cookie.”
