*That* Solo Cameo

Terrible idea. Lucas wasted Darth Maul's opportunity in TPM. Of all the characters they could have brought back...why Maul? I just think this is so lazy. I guess Palpatine is not dead either. I mean 2 out of the 3 people we have seen tossed down endless shafts have evidently lived (and one of those was literally cut in half). Throw in Boba Fett evidently escaping from the pit, and it looks like you never have to worry about dying in the Star Wars universe. You will either come back as a ghost or a half human cyborg. I am also assuming this means that Phasma has a pretty good shot at being in Episode 9.

 

Yeah, that's right. Sidious would know through the Force.....well, it's just a movie after all, let see how it goes in the box office

 

Yeah, I'm really curious how Maul will be received in this.

I mean, obviously there are a lot of fans who are predispositioned to already dislike it when it happened in The Clone Wars, but a large portion of the audience is actually going to be surprised, which is a whole different thing.

I expect it to definitely be divisive, but I wonder if the general consensus will lean toward disliking it, or to being pleasantly surprised.

 

Just saw it. Maul was there. It was a small cameo but really neat!

The icing of the cake? He is Ray Park but voiced by Mr. Sam Witwer himself!!

It is all tied up. Last time we saw Maul before this was in the comic Darth Maul Son of Dathomir and the next time we will see it in canon ater Solo is Rebels Season 2 Finale.

 

In the old EU, Palpatine did come back.

 

I heard there are plenty of Easter eggs related to the prequels in Solo, not just Maul’s cameo. With Disney’s emphasis being on the OT and the relative silence regarding the prequels (at least when it comes to the marketing of the films,) I’m shocked and delighted to see some inclusion to all eras.

Now.. if there was a way to find out if the Maul cameo is actually true before I see the film on Thursday night... (I’m a little hesitant to believe this because nobody seems to know what Maul speaks in this scene.)

 

I saw the movie on Monday. I do know what he speaks - he talks to Qi’Ra giving her indications to meet in Dathomir. If we remember his criminal affiliations during The Clone Wars, he is the mysterious leader of Crimson Dawn.

 

Apparently there's another leaked pic of him - better this time. Oh, God, I so hate this idea.

I wouldn't mind seeing how he lost control of this criminal syndicate, as he seems alone once again by the time he's on Malachor.

 

I know!! the possibilities are endless since we see it here in Solo 10 years before ANH and the next moment we see him is around 2 years before ANH. A lot of things could have happened during that time for him losing control of his criminal organizations.

 

Would you classify this as a "huge cameo at the end of the movie"?

 

Yes. Definitely.

 

Does it fit with the story?

 

It does (although I’m still against it they brought him back in TCW). And to me and my girlfriend it was a very intruiging suprise! We both expected Jabba to be the Mastermind, but then you see a cloaked figure in a hologram. I littarely was thinking in my mind of all possibile known characters for this villain, but those 10 seconds before he reveals his face were too short to come up with Maul...

 

It does, especially since after Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir the last thing we know from Maul was that he was rescued by the Mandalorians and then a brief mention from his confrontation vs Ahsoka Tano in the Siege of Mandalore referenced in the Ahsoka book by E.K. Johnston. So far we know he survived and that he had control over criminal organizations so it fits into the story which focus more on the modus operandi of the criminal underworld rather than the galaxy under the Empire's fist.

When Dryden Vos mentioned earlier in the movie he reported to someone else I thought of Jabba too, but then when I saw the cloaked figure in the hologram and hear the voice of Sam Witwer I started freaking out in my seat!

 

Well, you may not believe this, but my mind kinda refused to believe it (even after seeing his face) until he turned on his double lightsaber. To me this is indeed probably leading into a sequel, or another cameo in the Kenobi film. People who didn’t see TCW or Rebels probably want to know more now about Maul and how he survived.. The movie (Solo) was enjoyable (no more, no less), but this appearance was the most intruiging part!

And yes, it opens the door for something else to be added to his canon story. And yes, some of the folks outside the screening room were asking me: "Hey was that Darth Maul?" since not everyone knows he survived Episode I.

 

How would this work? Maul doesn't know about Obi-Wans whereabouts until shortly before his death.
