Just because someone is good at making up new aliens, doesn't mean we shouldn't have the classic aliens we are used to in Star Wars. I mean, congratulations on honing your drawing and designing skills, but this is Star Wars. I have to agree with Amanaman on this one.

I guess I shouldn't have asked people to use their imagination, hahaha

I guess that's where we disagree. It's not using your imagination here. It's making a Star Wars movie. Sure, there will always be new aliens, ships, etc. That's where the Prequels scored big. They gave us new and mixed with what we already knew. TFA gave us very little of the old and a lot of new. Hopefully, R1 is just hiding it from the trailers.

That's why it would suck to work at LFL and on these films in a creative role. No matter what new territory you bring to the story and add to the tapestry, there will always be those who don't appreciate you expanding their horizons and just want things to be the way they were.

It's a sad reality of the world we live in that people are more comfortable looking backwards than forwards.

But that has never been my point my dear friend. As I stated before, what made both trilogys mech wonderfully was that while Lucas included tons of new aliens, he always integrated known races and that made the movie seem like it was in the very same universe. A person called in to design aliens for the new SW movie would be thrilled that he could put his/her talents to good use and that person would have an awesome time creating new monsters while getting to do some old favorites.
Here take a look at this pic:

And now look at this one:

Do you see what I did? I only added two known aliens and nothing more but when you see this you just know that you are in the very same galaxy. Seeing just one Rodian and a Nikto among so many unknown new species makes you think that indeed Takodana is a place that's incredibly far away and that that is why there are hardly any know races but yet it also let's you feel familiar with what you already know as seeing that Nikto and Rodian makes the movie mesh well with the other 6 films. That gives the impresion that you are in a totally far away place and not that Disney seems to want to trash almost every creature design that Lucas and his team made up.

Also, you have to know for a fact that when you are already a true SW fan making reference to being a creature designer or actor as you mentioned, it's because you already love the universe as it is and I'm pretty sure that if Lucasfilm came up to you and told you that they want you to be in a new SW movie either as an actor or a designer but that the only characters they have for you to work on or play the part is an Aqualish or a Rodian, I just know that you are still gonna be mind blown and you are happily going to do it instead of moping and feeling sad because you can't play or design an original never before seen alien. It's Star Wars! And I'm pretty sure many of us wouldn't be bothered at all if they hired us just to play a Power Driod!

I don't really see it as looking backwards Laggamaroo as the prequels gave us tons of new races but yet they also expanded on those we knew. Would you really feel that it would suck if they got you to work on a film like Star Trek or Lord of the Rings but they only let you work with Klingons, Vulcans, Cardassians, and Jem'Hadar for Trek or Elves, Orcs and Goblins for LOTR? These movies have a known order of things and fans dig it that way. Sure you can sometimes have the liberty to come up with something cool and new if the story calls for it but it makes no sense to use aliens in SW as the token species of the day as it is done in series like Power Rangers or Ultraman. Imagine working on movies that only count with one alien species like Predator, Alien or Avatar. Would you dislike that and see it as a sucky job just because those movies don't let you create anything knew?

Apples and Oranges. Star Wars isn't like those other properties, except maybe Star Trek, they bring in new species in almost every film as well.

In these Star Wars cases, the story absolutely called for it; they went new places we haven't seen. That's really all this boils down to.

I'm pretty sure there's too much pre-judgment going on of a film none of have seen yet. As I was the first to point out, we can be fairly certain Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba are in it, so there will no doubt be plenty of spots for familiar aliens. We already saw some Mon Cal in the BTS reel, even though their coloring was new.

Next thing I know people are going to be running around wearing red "Make Star Wars Great Again" hats... ;)

Upon further evaluation I can say Rogue one is actually doing a much better job of incorporating old aliens as well as new aliens that fit the old Star Wars aesthetic
