I’ve seen The Last Jedi twice now, and I really enjoyed the film, but there’s one thing I keep noticing in the sequel trilogy that’s really starting to get under my skin. There’s a sore lack of original era or prequel era alien species in the crowd scenes. Besides named characters like Chewie, Yoda, and Nien Nub, there were zero established alien species in this film. It was especially obvious in the scum and villainy filled Canto Bight, which would have felt more “star warsian” if there was a rich Hutt at one of the gambling tables next to all the new creatures, or even just a Twilek Bartender. Star Wars is a very visual film series, and these little details go the extra mile to make the worlds feel cohesive. I appreciate the creature designers wanting to make something different, but I want to believe we’re still in the same galaxy far, far away, and sometimes I’m not so sure.

Agree. There are a lot of cool aliens in TFA and TLJ but....I don't mind, once in a while, to see a rodian, a hutt, twi'lek, etc...

Yeah, for all the positives in this film, I agree. How could there be no legacy aliens around in the casino or in Maz'? Minor gripe of mine, but still...

Yeah, what makes this movie so odd from a SW perspective is that it was actually very confined in terms of world building. The locations in TLJ are actually on par with the NUMBER of locations in the OT movies, but somehow here it seems like we see so very little of the GFFA, and I think one of the main reasons is the lack of species we saw portrayed.

The new species we did see looked more like something out of a Jim Henson production rather than SW - all were small and muppet-like (the caretakers of the Jedi temple, the Porgs, the Canto Bight house dealers - why were they all small?

The problem is these movies move at such a breakneck speed that don’t actually take the time to build a world, they just show you a place long enough to know to see the backdrop
