Good catch. Unfortunately now that I've seen these photos it is also gonna bug the crap outta me. I never would have caught it but this is the sort of thing my wife catches in films. Its like the woman watches for exactly this sort of thing.

Hopefully in the final cut of the film this is something the fixed either in the editing bay or via the reshoots or whatever.

Of the leaks one portion there isn't a lot of talk about is the big space battle at the end. More so the part about the falcon arriving with a massive fleet and when do they appear? I gather a small fleet arrives with x wings , y wings, a wings ect and they attack the star destroyers while Finn and co are on that star destroyer trying to take it down.

I wonder if at the last minute that mega fleet arrives to save the day?

I just marked up my own screenshots and saw your post. Here's what I came up with and am in agreement with you:

I know people are calling MSW into question because he just got denied by Colin Trevorrow but I think his stuff about Rise of Skywalker specifically is probably accurate because I go along with the theory that he has a source in Bad Robot. That said he just posted an article saying again that how the Emperor returns is not explained. There was apparently a cut scene in which resistance characters discuss theories but it just ended with them deciding the Sith have their ways and it didn't matter. So maybe there is an ultra secretive scene that actually explains it but everybody who has been leaking seems pretty definitive on it.

If it is not explained, it seems like they banking on people not caring either. My guess is people that like the film won't and people that don't will use that as a major piece of the ammo against the film. That said, even though I haven't seen the film to decide whether I like it or not, the idea that that isn't explained seems like a pretty big omission. I mean this isn't like some obscure canon thing that the general public doesn't really know about, we are talking about the main bad guy being dead at the end of Return of the Jedi and now all of sudden he's not. Seems like everybody seeing this movie would know how Return of the Jedi ends. So we'll see.

If they go the route of just ignoring the implications of Palpatine being alive it will be a monumental mistake. I cannot believe a competent writer/director would just blow that off and not avail themselves of the easy explanation that ties the PT and ST together with Palpatine learning and using a technique to cheat death from DP. It would be a massive show of disrespect to the fan base to boot.

not that it does prove anything, but in all truth reading this https://uproxx.com/movies/chris-terrio-interview-rise-of-skywalker-palpatine-lando/ my take is that it would be explained

The other thing I forgot to mention is that *it appears* the plinth with Vader's mask on is completely flat at the back but angled into a wedge shape at the front, ie that is not symmetrical either.
If the view was rotated, Vader's mask would be facing the wrong direction anyway, even if it was in the correct location...

    From the latest TV spot...
    Rey: "How'd it go?"
    Poe: "Really bad, actually..."

    Paxis:
    [The Resistance’s Jungle Base]
Finn and Poe return to the Resistance base bearing the knowledge obtained from their encounter with the First Order informant.

    [...]
Rey yells at Poe for damaging the Falcon while lightspeed skipping and Poe yells at Rey for damaging BB-8.

Still seems to be stacking up for me. "Really bad, actually" would certainly cover being ambushed by the First Order and having to use dangerous manoeuvres to escape, damaging the Falcon in the process, and their informant being captured as a result.
And it looks as though one of BB-8's panels is broken in that still too (the orange housing appears to be missing).

Seems to imply this scene at the base on Ajan Kloss comes after Poe has been on a mission of some kind... and he ain't wearing his scarf yet... ;)

Although I'd say - to my mind - it would seem like a more natural editing choice to have the sequence of events go from Kylo's quest to locate the wayfinder, to Poe and Finn's mission, then to Rey's training on Ajan Kloss, culminating with her damaging BB-8 before being interrupted by the Falcon's arrival... rather than cutting from Rey's training to Poe's mission and then back to Ajan Kloss the way Paxis has it - but that's just my opinion, of course.

Call me cynical, but I don’t expect them to give us a explanation as to why Palpatine returned that makes sense. I believe many things will be implied and JJ will give quotes about returning that anyone can interpret the way they want from a certain POV.

I just look at JJ’s history and he’s not that type of storytelling as fans are yearning for something that just isn’t going to happen. JJ is good on a surface level as a director. I believe the movie will be entertaining, I believe the characters will connect with the audience and I think it will feel like SW. That’s exactly the way I feel towards TFA.....but.......upon further inspection.....That’s when TROS will have problems. When you watch a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time you’ll be frustrated at the ‘big picture’ stuff that gives the movies their lore cause it won’t be there.

My point is I really enjoy TFA, but the movie does nothing for the Saga/story when you take a step back and really look at it as Part 7. I feel TROS will be just as entertaining and fun but suffer the same ‘lack of big picture’ fate.

it does also confirm I was wrong...
Poe doesn’t wear the scarf at very beginning of the movie.

This clearly shows either they have a major continuity issue, or more likely, it gets force pulled during the fight, perhaps spun around. Maybe the fight is over the vader helmet and its effect on Kylo?

I look at all that and honestly think it's great. As long as the moment to moment character interaction and motivations are good (which is what JJ is known to be good at) works then I can see this playing out really well.

On Rey Palpatine, thematically that lines up really well with Kylo having to face his own grandfathers sins and legacy.

On Ben Solo being thrown down the pit. look it's gonna be cool that he's redeemed and everything, I'm sure by the point he defeats the KOR, saves Rey and confronts Palpatine we'll be rooting for him, but the guy has done some dispicable things, Much like Vader did. We can consider him redeemed to a certain extent but he can't be allowed to live after what he's done. The part he's played in billions of deaths and for us the audience the death of Han Solo, to some degree Luke Skywalker and the mutilation of Finn. When I look at other forums and the people who have a problem with this it seems to come from deluded fangirls who have some weird maternal or romantic affiliation or projection with Kylo Ren. From a story pov this fate makes perfect sense and I think it will be great on screen.

This is honestly better than I could have hoped for given that JJ Abrams and the guy who wrote Justice League were behind the script. I hope these leaks play out because it's better than anything i could have imagined before.

Rey Palpatine is the reason why I wish JJ didn’t try to tie up the Saga as he boxed himself in from a storytelling perspective. The ST should have been about moving on with the story after ROTJ, not re-contextualizing the 9 movies. I’ve liked everything new they’ve done in this Trilogy, but everytime they try to tie up the Trilogy/Saga, I sort of roll my eyes.

This is where I disagree. Han, Leia and Luke WANT him to live. So, from a story POV it doesn't make sense at all.

What some people don't seem to get is NOT explaining things are WHY we dislike some of the plot points. People want to know HOW and WHY things happen in this universe. It's no longer 1977 starting from the beginning. You can't cop out and just introduce things randomly without explanation when you have a fully fleshed out universe. Not to mention GL seemed to have no trouble explaining things through conversations and dialog. Knowing what we got in TFA, I'm not holding my breath for JJ explaining Snoke or Palpatine.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 8, 2019, Original Post Date: Dec 8, 2019 ---
Bingo. It makes no sense that they tried to "wrap up" something that didn't need wrapping up. They could have introduced an entirely new conflict with new characters and new locations and had the original cast help guide the new characters on their journeys.

JJ didn't have the guts to have a fully formed New Republic and trained Jedi around. He didn't have the guts to show Luke succeeded to restart the Jedi order, Leia succeeded to govern in the New Republic, and Han succeeded at being a great dad to his son (which should have been named Bail Solo - never understood Leia and Han wanting to name their kid after someone they barely knew). I think he was afraid he would end up with Prequels 2.0.

This is what happens when you have people that don't have a story they are passionate about. It becomes paint by numbers, safe, and disjointed. Hoping he pulls a rabbit out of his hat with TROS.

I probably blame Disney more than JJ for the OT 2.0 as they picked him for that reason alone. Once they threw out Lucas ST outline, they made an executive decision that they didn’t want to venture too much out of the box. They got so scared of the PT backlash and took that criticism literally.

I will continue to say I think TROS will be an entertaining movie but fall flat when it comes down to the nitty gritty details regarding Palpatine and tying up the Saga.

That’s what is so frustrating about the new Trilogy is I actually like the new characters and have never yearned for the old ones, except bringing them back for a cameo in Episode 7. The story has always been the Achilles heel for me as they did everything else right. I just can’t get super hyped for Rey Nobody-Skywalker, Palpatine dying again, and Kylo Ren redeemed. We’ve been down this road before in Episode 6.

This idea that Lucasfilm and Disney completely threw out George Lucas' Sequel Trilogy outlines is a somewhat exaggerated fallacy, as evidenced by the various Visual Guides and other behind-the-scenes materials.

The seeds of what Lucas wanted the Sequel Trilogy to be run throughout The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and even TRoS, from the concept of a female lead character to Luke's entire story arc in TLJ to the methodology behind Palpatine's return, and this is indisputable.

Lucas very obviously would likely have preferred that his outlines be used in their entirety, but it is disingenuous to say that they were abandoned completely because they weren't.
