Does not add much to the story. More fan service if you ask me

I feel like that as well. To end this trilogy on Tatooine just REEKS of saccharine sweet "and they lived happily ever after" crap. Maybe I'm a bit too cynical, but really? It's just nostalgia.

Luke wanted to get the hell off Tatooine and never look back. Now I'm supposed to believe it had some spiritual significance? I guess it
As for all of these "voices". I don't get it. Are they going to just use "voices" as a way to get around the idea that one must be taught how to become a force ghost to become one? And yes, Anakin wasn't taught, but I'm going to give Lucas the benefit of the doubt and assume Anakin gets a pass because he is the chosen one. This also comes off as a cheap ploy to play another nostalgia card.

Anyway, I'm going to sign off for a few days. I was hoping JJ could/would stick the landing but I now see I was very likely wrong.

The ending serves two purposes; one is obvious fan service ( which is not necessarily a bad thing and two is there is bringing the story full circle with symbolism. The Skywalkers started in Tatooine so it is only fitting that it is in Tatooine where Rey adopts the Skywalker name.

The original idea was that Anakin was able to come back because of Obi-Wan and Yoda.
Qui-Gon was the first to learn how to retain his identity through his connection to the Force, but he is not able to appear as a ghost (Lucas says so in the Making of ROTS book).

Qui-Gon, in turn, teaches Obi-Wan and Yoda what he has learned, and they ultimately do what they do, completely retaining their identities.
Anakin never learns how to do this.
He is able to retain his identity because Yoda and Obi-Wan rescue him from the "Netherworld of the Force" before he "becomes one with the Force", as stated in the Annotated Screenplays and referenced by Lucas on the ROTJ commentary track.

I presume Mace has been thrown in because SLJ has a recognisable voice. But really, he should have lost his identity and become one with the Force a long time ago. So that doesn't really jive for me.
Gonna be a bit awkward when he hears Anakin's voice alongside his too... "Well, if it isn't the little Sith-loving mother****** who cut off my hand and lost my favourite saber!"

So the Skywalker legacy is nothing but death, destruction and chaos. They couldn't let one have a normal life?

Why? Say Why again? I dare you! I double dare you motherf%=//!!!

Sorry couldn't resist. But really I think everyone else's explanations are why. Plus they wanted to drive home the point that all the prominent Jedi (very recognizable voice) in the scene because its effectively the Spirits of all the Jedi vs all the Sith.

TROS was a messy film with a poor weak ending. But I dont hate it strangely enough. I should, but I don't. Its better than TLJ. Maybe I just don't care enough after SW was ruined by TLJ.

Theres no time travel inter-dimensional timey-wimey retconning. I didnt see Matt Smith at all.

The Knights of Ren and the red sith troopers are very briefly used and ultimately very weak characters that were designed as merch and toys ala Captain Phasma.

Glad that C-3PO has memory restored by R2-D2, who was carrying a backup of C-3PO's memory all along....

Still don't understand why and how Leia died. Was weird.

Rey taking Skywalker name at the end was HORRIBLE, talk about identity appropriation!!! And why would she move into Lukes old homestead home on Tatooine? Weird and fan-servicey.

How Palpatine survived ROTJ is not explained - which is the weakest bad point of the film, along with who was Palpatine's son and his partner.

Nasty cringey Reylo kiss scene got a big groan and tsk from the audience I was with. It was more comical and cringey.

Overall a very watchable film which was entertaining in parts, but ultimately messy, confusing and unsatisfying.

    5/10

How the hell did Ben turn up at the end?

He obviously takes a TIE Fighter from the Death Star wreckage on Endor as it looked like an Imperial version, not a first order, going by the colours.

Those things can’t jump to hyperspace!! It makes no sense how he got there.

I did see a theory of him being a force projection, but his body vanishing and it also cutting to Leia’s body vanishing at exactly the same time indicated she was waiting for him to pass away to take him over to the Force with her, even though she died about 40 minutes earlier in the film after reaching out to him on the Death Star.......

Why then didn’t he appear as a force ghost to Rey at the end if Leia did indeed wait for him to help him pass over, of which the above seemed to indicate (for me anyway)

A few key desicons just didn't seem to be thought out well enough.

Luke lifting his old X-Wing out of the water did not work for me. It didn't have the magic of the similar scene in TESB.

Wedge’s 'blink and you'll miss it' cameo as a gunner on the Falcon in the final battle was shockingly bad (dressed in an X-Wing pilots uniform of all things so YOU KNOW who he is..). A second or two of him being introduced for the first time by simply saying “Nice flying Lando” and that’s it?

They could have introduced him earlier at the resistance base with some small lines then, would have taken a few more seconds of the film, tops.

The Emperor looked younger, he actually looked like Sheev (but just very white) in TPM than the actual, facially disfigured Emperor we last saw - in terms of his more recent appearance in ROTS as opposed to ROTJ.

His appearance just didn't look right, given he's nearly dead/is dead/is a puppet/is alive due to sith magic (no idea which of those as it wasn't properly explained...)

Why was Rey looking lovingly/pensive at a group of children when there's no reason for her to do that? She doesn't end up with a family or mention wanting a family of her own and by that point it hasn't even revealed she has feelings for Ben. Just ends up burying lightsabers and sliding down the sand into the Lars homestead on a sheet of metal (as a call back to TFA) alone with BB8.

It's a shame they also indicated a couple of times Finn is very much force sensitive but chose not to do anything with that either.

I don't mean to be a killjoy but some of this movie and it's decision making really did not make sense

Lastly, the actress Jodie Comer from Killing Eve plays Reys Mum.

    Recognised her immediately.

I agree about the kiss. I don't think she was moving into the homestead or staying on Tattoine. She had no reason to stay there (a la Obi- Wan watching after Luke). Feel like it was sort of explained the Sith Acolytes brought back a version of palps if not the mechanics of how (do we care?) I think Matt Smith was in an earlier draft as a young Palpatine or a vessel for the Sith (a better idea I think by the way) I think Leia's death was handled well but explained poorly. Han's inclusion was one of the best things in the movie. C3PO had the best lines. I liked both Jannah and Zorri Bliss wish there was more time for both those characters. 90% sure Jannah was written as Lando's daughter and I think it sucks that part of the story got edited out. I'm both happy and annoyed they highlighted Finn's awakening in the Force 2 movies too late.

You sure you're not thinking of Dominic Managhan? Matt Smith is a very different person with no close ups in this movie.

This is fair I think. I disagree, I hated it. But, at least you are honest about the film's flaws. People can enjoy the film, but you can't tell me its a "good" movie.

I think Leia died expending her energy to force skype Ben as Han. I'm okay with it, but why in the hell didn't she do it sooner? If she had that ability, what was she waiting on? This movie did not honor Leia. Quite the opposite. She was a bad mom and a bad leader. Lando should have clearly been in charge, since it only took him maybe a day to rally the galaxy.

    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 6, 2020, Original Post Date: Jan 6, 2020 ---
More good points. Ben showing up was really distracting. Like Poe magically getting off Tattoine, but worse because he is essentially the second lead of the film. Just randomly shows up, and we are supposed to just go with it.

** It is funny to read though this thread and see all of the people doubting Jedi Praxis etc and it was pretty much all spot on.

Not only is JJ an unoriginal hack, he has the worst security out there. I think Disney/KK only saw a "yes man" in JJ. No vision, no creativity, no courage, and no security even.
